Tips

  • Many tourist attractions are closed during Sabbath which extends from sunset on Friday to nightfall on Saturday.
  • If an Israeli holds your hand, accept it graciously as it is a gesture of friendship.
  • Avoid extending your thumb while gesturing as doing this is considered offensive in Israel.
  • Women can carry a scarf and a wraparound skirt that they can use to cover themselves while visiting certain religious sites in Israel.
  • Refrain from eating, smoking or drinking in public if it is the holy month of Ramadan in Egypt.
  • It is acceptable for men to wear sleeveless t-shirts in Egyptian coastal cities such as Sharm el-Sheikh and Dahab but otherwise they should stick to t-shirts with sleeves or buttoned down shirts.
  • Women are not required to cover their hair in Egypt unless they are entering a mosque.
  • Banks are closed on Fridays and Saturdays in Egypt.
