13 Day France Itinerary, incl. Paris and Bordeaux

- Days 1-2
Normandy & Brittany
Leave Paris early and head to Monet's House in Giverny. Get there before 9:30 AM to beat the tour buses. Take time to explore Rouen's medieval quarter before driving 2 hours to Caen. On day two visit Mont-Saint-Michel but check tide schedules first as they affect access. From there go to Saint-Malo to walk the old city walls and enjoy coastal views. End your day in Dinan with some authentic Breton crêpes.

Loire Valley
Stay in Amboise as your base for visiting châteaux. Start with Château de Chenonceau when it opens at 9 AM since it gets busy quickly. Visit Villandry's gardens in late afternoon when the light is best. At Chambord plan for at least 3 hours and rent bikes to see the grounds. Spend your evenings exploring Amboise's medieval center.

Dordogne & Bordeaux
Book Lascaux caves tickets ahead as they sell out fast. Visit early then spend time in medieval Sarlat. When visiting Rocamadour take the lift up and walk down to save your knees. In Bordeaux one visitor shared: "The Water Mirror is most magical at sunset when the lighting creates perfect reflections of Place de la Bourse."

Southern France
Drive from Lourdes to Carcassonne. Arrive by 9 AM to explore the ramparts before crowds arrive and it gets hot. In Marseille focus on the Vieux-Port area around 6 PM when fishing boats return. Skip the tourist restaurants on the port and look one street back for better food.

Burgundy Region
Travel from Lyon to Dijon through wine country. Visit Beaune's Hospices right at 9 AM opening to avoid crowds. Take a break from wine tasting at Savigny Castle to see their unique vintage vehicle collection. Walk Dijon's owl trail to see all the main sites.

Alsace & Champagne
Visit Colmar's old town early before shops open for the best photos. Stay in Riquewihr past 4 PM when most tourists leave. Finish in Strasbourg with a boat trip through Petite France. Take the 3-hour high-speed train from Bordeaux to Paris. Book upper deck seats for better views. Start your Paris visit at Montmartre before Sacré-Cœur gets crowded. A previous visitor noted: "Book your Eiffel Tower dinner reservation for sunset, around 9 PM in summer. The city lights up just as you're finishing dessert."

Unfortunately, my wife got sick on the tour an we could not participate fully in the activities. We finally had to leave it in Strasbourg. Margaux and Pablo were excellent guides, especially Margaux who got us medical help.
- Grand Tour of France
Mike, our tour director and Tom, our driver, did very good job to guiding us trough a busy program. Mike did a very good job organizing our tour. We had to be on the road quite early in the mornings but we were, most of the time, the first ones at our destination so we beat the crowd. He always provided some free time to discover on our own. I wish we didn't have to drag our luggage trough small hotel lobbies. Imagine 47 people going in small lobby with two luggage at the same time and doing it again when you are leaving in the next morning. Most of the hotels were adequate except when 37Celsius no air conditioner, no fridge in the room, no ice bucket. In most of the hotels the staff gave us ice when we gave them our plastic ice bag, except in Nice where one of the ladies at the front desk explained that the ice only for the bar. For our question; so where can we buy ice, the other lady at the front desk chimed in, out the door turn right and right again! That is not costumer service. The included food was good.

We had a great tour with Nicolas and Gael all across France! Let's hit all the positives. Nicolas was a GREAT tour guide. He was knowledgable, warm, personable, and kept things moving along smoothly. Gael was an excellent driver of a very nice coach. The ride was smooth and even in traffic, Gael had everything under control. The local guides were terrific. I want to warn you though - this tour is exactly what it says. It's 21 cities in 12 days. And that's a grueling pace. Now, we got a taste of most of the best French locations, about 2 or 3 hours in each city along the way. It was like a tapas of France - you have enough time to get a good feel for the city you're in. We never felt rushed, but we never felt like we could just lounge around either. However, to keep this pace up for two weeks is a bit rough. We love the fact that we did this tour, and that we got to see all of these places. Having been there, we now know exactly which ones we want to go back to, and which ones we can skip next time. But never again! It's just too much for us senior citizens to have to haul our bags and unpack and repack almost every day. (There are a couple of times on the tour where you spend two glorious days in the same hotel, but those are few and far between!) Again, if this is what you want - to see most of France outside of Paris - then yes, this is a GREAT tour. We had a GREAT time, and this is exactly what we wanted to see/do. But, if you want more than a couple/three hours in each location, and you want to stay in one city for a few days as a base to explore others, than this tour is NOT for you.
