About me:After leaving England in 2022 to full time travel, I’ve never looked back. I applied for tour guiding on a whim and a dream of living back in Asia after having lived in China as a teacher when I was 18. Luckily one life adventure decided I was the right girl for the job and here I am 1.5 years later! I love all things Japan, history, matcha, culture, food, you name it! Getting to be a part of guests “once in a lifetime” travel experience is really such a privilege. So often I have guests who have been dreaming of seeing Japan since they were little and getting to watch their eyes widen in amazement and excitement at finally fulfilling that dream and seeing all Japan has to offer will always be my favourite part of the job.

Constructive criticism/suggestions for the program: participants could be given a bit more free time to explore on their own. I also found many of the chosen dinner spots rather disappointing (outwardly “fancy,” small portions for relatively high prices, dry meat/fish). For me, authenticity matters more than trendy locations.

What I loved most was how easily Beth connected with the locals and made us feel part of the community. There was a really nice mix of chill time and getting to learn about the culture in a genuine, non-touristy way.
The island hopping was unreal — crystal-clear water, beautiful spots, and just the right amount of adventure. The private island stays were next-level... such a peaceful, unforgettable highlight.
Honestly, couldn’t recommend it more. If you want a trip that’s fun, laid-back, and meaningful, this is it.

A tip for future travellers. Bring comfy well worn in shoes! Pack light, pack for layered clothes (very cold in November and December) and embrace every chance to explore in your free time.

You'll have plenty of time to travel throughout Japan at your own pace! The activities and places covered by One Life Tour are primarily well-known shrines and parks that are worth seeing. You also save a lot of time because your tour guide will help you arrange your day and show you around. If not, you would be lost and would have to spend most of your time figuring things out. I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hakone, a traditional Japanese residence, and the hostel was pleasant and tidy. The group had a great time joking and giggling, and everyone was nice and friendly!

Beth our tour guide was amazing. Very attentive, super knowledgable and couldn’t do enough for us. She went above and beyond. My only criticism of her is that she’s a lot better at karaoke than she lets on.
It sounds a bit cheesy but I’ve honestly had the best time of my life. So thank you Beth and my fellow travellers!

The tour included all the “essentials” ( and more) and the free time was more than enough and in all the places you’d want it to be. It wouldn’t have been the same without Beth as our guide ,who was able to enhance the experience even further with her personal recommendations and attentiveness to all 18 of us ! (The people in the group were an added bonus). I wouldn't hesitate to book with One Life Adventures again :) .

She had great suggestions for places to eat and things to see, and gave us personalized help in setting our itineraries for our free time. Can't say enough good things about the time and effort she put into our experience. I would also give top marks to the itinerary. There was a huge amount of free time for me to explore on my own, which was exactly what I wanted, but with the "security" of hitting all the must-sees with Beth and the group. The included meals were all excellent as well. I have removed one star because the Tokyo accommodation left a LOT to be desired in terms of cleanliness and comfort. The hostel was old, the linens were dingy and the bathrooms were frankly gross, which is a surprise given how pristine most Japanese public facilities are; the train stations had cleaner toilets than our hostel. The accommodations for the rest of the tour were wonderful, really clean, comfy and well designed, especially the Kyoto stay, but the Tokyo stay really didn't start the tour off with a good first impression. All in all though this tour was really good value for money, and I had a wonderful first trip to Japan.

For the price of the tours I feel you get the guided tour with historical background with an ample amount of time to allow you to explore the things you wanted to see besides the typical features of the Japan. Never did a multi shared accomodations but it was a great group of people so it made it even more enjoyable.
Beth was great. She was informative and was knowledgeable enough of the area, when a few got lost to be able to guide them back to the group. She provided cultural do's and don't which helped a great. Beth was able to give us the history of the areas we did and recommendations for other hot spots to check out.
It was an overall great experience for me and would recommend it to others.

Plus, she did go the extra mile to take lots of lovely photos of us!There was a good balance between having jam packed days, and free time to explore at your own pace, especially when we went to Kyoto.

Accomodation ranged from adequate to good, be aware that most of the hostels are shared accommodation so bring sleeping masks and ear plugs! Beth was an excellent guide and was very knowledgeable and keen throughout the trip. The only reason it's 4 stars is because of the amount of walking involved. Some of the sights have you on your feet for long periods of time, which is very draining. I am an overweight person myself and found myself constantly sitting on the floor or on walls to have a quick rest before we march on to the next point. Overall though very fun, cost effective holiday, lots of free time and you get to see the main sites plus a few off the beaten track. Arigatou gozaimas!

You will enjoy the tour much more if you make plans or have ideas of how you'll spend the free time as it is the majority of the tour. Hostels we stayed in were all fine.
The tour is misleading as it outlines all your transport is included however, most of the time it was only 1 way travel. Public transport is used to go to the included sightseeing together as a group but it was at your own cost to get public transport back to the hostel.
You will need data to get around and find the meeting spots or location of activities you opted in to.
Overall good budget tour.

This is a great tour for getting the Japan essentials and learning a lot about each area, while also having sections of time to explore independently. I only have a problem with the company “Gap360” not “one life” as the hostel was “shown” I wasn’t informed that I would be sharing a room with 8 other girls, with 2 plug (we would have to unplug our lights just to charge our phones) only 1 shower door closed it wasn’t good, the place was very clean (ofc for Japan) but as I was informed they don’t recommend “suitcases” I wasn’t informed that we would be taking public transport everywhere, and I brought two suitcases along with me and I’m not use to dragging my suitcases around, I also had to send my suitcase as it was too heavy for me to lift (23kg) as I had put a small one in there, Beth had to help me with them and the people on the tour, but my other big suitcase couldn’t be sent, the company should inform people that you will have to pay or you might not be able to send a suitcase, but Thankfully Beth informed me before. I don’t personally think that’s fair, I think there’s should be more information about why you definitely shouldn’t bring a suitcase. Overall the hostels we was in after the first one was lovely I’m so happy I got to experience so many places, but as a company I think there’s should be more information about if you have mental heath (that maybe they shouldn’t recommend certain places to go or do) I saw there was an information box about it but noting more, I had an interesting time with the “tour” but I’m happy I done it, Beth got me through it, without her I probably would have gone home (because of my mental health) but Beth thank you once again for just being you❤️you was everything I needed and could of asked for an angel in disguise you went above and beyond, thank you Beth❤️🫰🏻

I felt comfortable to come to her at any point to ask for her advice or suggestions especially for my free time and best modes of travel.
The set itinerary for each day was so comforting knowing I was getting the experience I signed up for and not feeling overwhelmed in any sense. Beth prepped us well the night before each new day and pinned everything in the WhatsApp group so there was no confusion on what to expect.
We definitely got to see all the ✨essentials✨ of Japan. The trip was so special to me and I will never forget it, I feel I have made friends for life.
I even decided to get myself a souvenir for life: a tattoo! Beth was so supportive and showed me the best place for this with reviews etc.
Experience tips: try your best to travel light if you can, build a capsule wardrobe and mix and match things to save on space and you’ll be bringing a lot of souvenirs back! There is free time build into the tour so make sure you do your research beforehand and make a list of places/things you want to do/see! It can get pretty humid depending on time of year you go, again, research this beforehand, maybe bring a hand held fan!
There is a lot of walking, it’s very important you bring a comfortable pair of shoes/trainers to get at least 20k plus steps in daily!

The tour had the perfect balance of Beth guiding us through the craziness of Japan (which can be pretty overwhelming!) while giving great tips on where to eat, how to get around, and sharing cool cultural and historical info. Plus, her Instagram photography game was on point!
Beth was super generous, kind and helpful and kept the energy up, even after those early mornings following a few too many sakes! Karaoke in Kyoto was a blast (don’t be fooled, Beth is a total karaoke pro), and the zen gardens were such a peaceful change of pace.
A few tips: Come with lots of energy—it’s a busy trip with plenty of walking and long days. It’s a good idea to plan a bit for your free time too; having a rough idea of what you want to see will help. Definitely pack light! You’ll be using public transport to get around with your luggage, so a heavy bag can make things tricky. Also, keep in mind this is a budget-friendly tour, so be prepared for hostels and shared dorm rooms—they're basic but totally fine!

The trip is well planned and budget friendly, I would, however, have loved to stay a litttle longer in Hakone. I also enjoyed that we were given time to explore the different areas on our own, which also gave us time to rest a little in between the planned activities.
The Japan essential is great for people, who have never been to Japan before considering, especially Tokyo can be overwhelming for foreigners.
The dorm-room situations was also great taking the budget into account. Do have in mind that there’s a possibility that rooms in the first hostel might be mixed gender, but not necessarily.
We were a group of mixed people (couples, friends and solo-travelers) and everyone got along and enjoyed each others company.
Overall a such a good a trip, nice people, excellent guide and good experience. I would recommend this to others and leave a 5-star rating. ?

This tour offers a perfect balance between guided experiences and free time, ideal for those with a packed itinerary. Just two days before our visit to Kyoto, several people in our group expressed interest in renting kimonos. Unfortunately, the original option was fully booked due to the late notice. However, Beth went above and beyond, finding us another location where we could rent kimonos and participate in a tea ceremony. It's important to note that during peak seasons, availability may be limited, so booking in advance is highly recommended.
I went on this trip as a solo traveler and was initially concerned about connecting with the rest of the group. However, everyone was incredibly friendly and welcoming, and we all got along really well.
Things to be aware of:
-Summer in Japan is very hot and very humid.
-Lots of different transports used so pack lightly. I used a suitcase which was okay, however be aware that there is a lot of stairs.
-You will do a lot of steps everyday so pack appropriate shoes.
Overall, this was a great trip and would recommend.

Overall an amazing trip! The perfect trip if you want a nice and budget friendly trip to japan with all the essential stops, but still want free time to explore by yourself.
The hostels and home stays are nice, especially The Piece Hostel in Kyoto. (Even though we stayed in a 18 person dorm room, it was clean and nice showers).
Keep in mind that not all transport is included. Sometimes you have to pay to get the train/bus home to the hostel. I would recommend a bringing a backpack instead of a suitcase, as there is a little bit of walking to the train and metro stations when traveling throughout japan. I would also recommend bringing some clothes that are nice for a bit of hiking and exploring, as the weather is very hot in the summer.
Our tour guide Beth did an amazing job! She was really nice and helpful, and helped research and suggest places for our free time. She went with us to karaoke which was really fun!

She was super friendly and was really fun on the tour. I signed up on this tour with no expectations and it was the highlight of my year! She helped with our itinerary during free time in Kyoto and with taking pictures. She was always available. The highlight of the trip was definitely the traditional sleeping arrangements in Gora (Mt Fuji). When visiting Mt Fuji, the dinner will be mainly a western fusion. This is because that's the only restaurant open at the time. Loved the food tours we did so far. I had special diet requirements (no pork / beef) and Beth made sure it was all catered for. Loved the opportunity to meet people from different paths of life and getting to know them over the past few days and create beautiful memories.
For people planing to visit in Sept, please be mindful that it is really hot and humid. Get the face towel and body mist from shops and have lots of water to keep you going. We also got electrolytes water - sweat water and aquarius from the convenience stores. We do move from one city to another and it's quite convenient to pack light as not all train stations will have lifts or elevators. I did bring a big suitcase for shopping and posted it to Osaka from Tokyo.

The tour is very well guided, in my case Beth, that gave us the intro on how to behave in the country, what to do and what to avoid, the history of the places we visited and lots of options for the time we didn't have things planned (also took a lot of photos and provided important information on where to eat)
Choose the time you go to Japan based on how you want to experience it. My availability was only August so there was a lot of heat and some of the places are not as glamorous like it would be in spring or autumn but I am happy with the tour.
Some suggestions for someone who is thinking about taking this tour, travel light because you don't really need that much. Clothes you can wash and if you really need something you forgot you can buy because the prices are not very different and there are a lot of options for everything. Another thing is to read the tour and plan what you really want to do in your free time, rest, shopping, places not included, etc. Also there are some available extras that could be fun but try to select the ones are really indispensable for you. Because some things might be far and being organized is the best option.

As someone who has done group tours with a few other providers I can hands down say One Life knows what they're doing. The essentials tour was thoughtfully planned and seamless. The inclusions are amazing. Nothing felt rushed. The itinerary was well balanced. There's more included than they let on in the brochure! We also had plenty of free time which was refreshing. And our guide Beth was a delight - a personal insta photographer, friend, and planner who made an effort to send some of us curated recommendations. I did all the optional extras and loved them. The only thing that would have made them better is more of the group joining them with me but if you're able - don't hesitate.
If you're going in summer don't stress, a bottle or 2 of pocari sweat and a portable fan will sort you out. Just pack light and make sure you have super comfy shoes - you'll need them.

She was very well organized and likeable, plus very tall and very blonde this came in handy on the Train Stations (only one that size and with that head 😆 ).
For being my first time traveling alone, and my first time in more than 10 years, it was a good and well organized experience.
I only didn't like it when I got lost, which was when I went solo to some places the 3rd day, bad experience and almost no time to get to where I wanted to.
My point is that being, always, with the group is the way to go, and was always a great experience.
Keep in mind, that if you came to take pictures of every tiny detail in the cities, especially Tokyo, as a first timer, you might end up behind the group a lot, like it happened to me, hehe.
The other important point to keep in mind is how hot and humid it is (on Summer, August, for us).
Please, please, bring shorts and clothing you can use and are comfortable sweating in (perhaps not to the point you look like you are going to the Gym, but not far from that either).
Bring or buy a small hand fan, it makes it more bearable, this I wish I did since the beginning.
Aside from that, take money from airport, the machine gives out 10,000 yen, minimum, so in order to get smaller amounts, just use that in any mart (Family Mart, 7-11, Lawson) or really anywhere you go to eat and/or buy.
You will need coins for some Bus and Trains you want to take yourself in the Free Time your tour guide will give you (if you want to go anywhere else, that is, or just rest at the Hostel.
Ok so the first Hostel look very cheap, double beds and all, but it also reminds me of camping out with boyscouts and family, but with air-conditioner of course 😉.
The second place is more nicer, with a traditional Japanese look, beds close to the floor. The 3rd place is just like a small hotel, and the best (so far, we are heading to Osaka).
Clothing:
- Shorts: please, only one jean 👖 or long pants, remember the temperature and climate, you will want to have shorts of you didn't bring any.
- Shoes: bring tennis, walking shoes. Don't come in sandals (of any kind). I used barefoot sandals one whole day and got a blister so bad under my right feet it affected my walking for 4 days straight. Many girls were using things I'm embarrassed to put here (big facepalm).
- Don't bring too many clothes, you can clean and dry them here (must pay a little, like 230 yen or around that, in a machine with coins).
- Don't bring a lot, because you will want to buy stuff and will not have any space, like it happened to me, be mindful of that.
- Pack: fanny pack or small backpack for:
● Water bottle (you can refill with tap water from here, it is that safe/clean).
● Snacks: you will need them, and you can get them at any Mart (Family Mart, 7-Eleven, etc...) These are EVERYWHERE, I'm not joking, it's wild, not more wild than Machines (Drinking bottles, Ice Cream, etc...) it's mad, but hey, they will keep you alive 😉
● Tickets: your Tour guide (Beth, in our case) will give you tickets for trains, bus, entrances, etc...keep them close to you ALWAYS, that's why having a fanny pack is perfect for this.
Also: IC cards, but that's like the last 2 days.
● Money: coins, bills, you will use this a lot, but many restaurants and souvenirs shops will have the option of using Credit Cards (VISA Cards) and even IC cards to pay.
Summary:
- Temples, Shrines
- YOU WILL WALK (a lot)
- You will be SWEATING! (A lot more than walking).
- Don't worry, there are water bottles literally called "Sweat is Beautiful" (no joke).
These have electrolytes that will keep you alive, until you eat something, of course.
- Talking, yes, you will talk and hopefully bond with the other people on the tour and find similar and very different customs from each of your cultures. This is like half of the experience (until you came with your family, which is ok I guess? But not the same as meeting new people).
- Free time is not ENOUGH time, don't fall for that, 4 hours are nothing when everything is far away or it's your first time anywhere (learned thag the hard way).
- BE EARLY, if the tour guide says at 1:30pm, aim to be at 1pm there, why? Because you mind end up 12 or 10 minutes before the time and actually keep your sanity, if you don't you will ALWAYS be late.
Conclusion:
Japan is beautiful, weird and funny, but overall, memorable.
If I come back (when I come back) I'll be going to countryside, to the rice fields or something with more Nature (I'm not a city guy).

Also our tour guide, Beth, would give many suggestions for nice things to try and visit during our free time so that we wouldn’t miss out on anything. There were also plenty if opportunities to skip certain activities and instead do something else you had in mind. This was perfect! The summer heat is something you need to keep in mind, because some days it was 39 degrees and we were sweating a lot. So pack lightly, bring sunscreen and drink enough water!!! It’s a trip you’ll never forget and I had a lot of fun!!!

The tour was a great pace! There was plenty of free time scheduled in between, so just make sure to research the area in advance to have some options. You get a good amount of history and temple visits that normally would be missed if you didn’t research beforehand. Beth was also super helpful in providing recommendations for the area if you are ever stuck on what to do. I will say to be mindful of the weather when you are coming. We had our essentials tour at the end of July towards the first week of August and it was humid! Some of the temple tours have a lot of inclined hills and not many benches, so be prepared for some exercise. Thankfully, there are TONS of vending machines in the areas we visit, well stocked with water and electrolyte drinks. Pocari Sweat will be your best friend! It’s an electrolyte drink that replenishes you on these long hot days. Bring plenty of sports or dry fit clothing and comfortable shoes. Thankfully a lot of the hostels we stayed at had laundry options so you can pack on the lighter side. Which is helpful because you will be lugging around your luggage in between cities. If anything Don Quijote offers luggage and you can send your souvenirs ahead of the tour to the last hostel to avoid traveling between cities with it. They offer various cooling wipes, cooling pads (for your feet and legs after a long day of walking) and sunscreen in the convenience stores or pharmacies, please invest in them. Also be sure to bring an electric hand fan, uv umbrella or hats to help battle the heat. If anything they also offer this at local stores. But the tour is a great time and I had tons of fun with Beth!

I’ve gone through 2 packs of face wipes and almost a whole bottle of tee shirt cooling spray during my trip. Locals and tourists alike also use portable fans and umbrellas here to help with the heat. It gets so hot even after being outside for only a few minutes. Be prepared to walk. (especially for the day you visit Monkey Mountain) so you will need a good quality pair of sneakers for any Japan trip . If you have Asthma or other respiratory conditions please do your research about the itinerary for this trip & bring a mask with you for the excursion to Hakone. I did my research ahead of time & made sure to have one with me. I was still able to enjoy the experience because I wore a mask. Each of the accommodations has laundry machines & Japan also has many public laundry mats. Pack light because you’ll be the one carrying your luggage in train stations. You can always buy new luggage & mail it from one city to another if you buy too many souvenirs. Another point of advice would be to budget aside some $ for travel during your free time. The tour is a good mix of planned activities and free time. Anywhere you want to travel on public transportation during free time needs to come out of your own pocket. If you would like to add on an extra with one life adventures I highly recommend the Kimono wearing/ Tea Ceremony add on . The staff working at those businesses were so kind and helpful.
From my time there, I don’t think sizes go beyond 2x in women, so something to keep in mind. It was so much fun getting to pick out all of the accessories for my outfit & getting my picture taken in Kyoto with the other tour group members. The Tea Ceremony was informative and calming. It was great to have everything put together by one life adventures instead of doing it myself. Shout out to our tour guide Beth for all of the great free time suggestions. Note: there is a lot of free time in Kyoto. Even though I watched a lot of youtube videos and read posts online on what to do in Japan…. It was awesome to have insight from Beth on what to do in each city in case you have no ideas. She even helped book some excursions outside the tour for the group members to do together. I haven’t participated in many group tours & this was my first with onelife, but Beth made everyone feel welcome & made sure we all had a fantastic tour. I appreciate that she always took photos of everyone individually and made sure we got group photos as well at all the famous sites. Thank you Onelife & Beth for a great first trip to Japan.

The agenda for the whole trip was well-balanced, offering a mix of cultural, historical, and modern attractions. I also really enjoyed the addition of free time during the trip, complete with our tour guide’s recommendations of things to fill the time with. Really every step of the way was planned out in some way, and that’s exactly what I was looking for in my first time in a new country.
Our tour guide Beth was incredibly knowledgeable of the local scene, facts about the locations we visited, and with general cultural knowledge. Her outgoing and fun attitude really set the tone for our group, and I think that her energy very much contributed to our enjoyment of the whole experience. Beth did an amazing job being there as a guide, but also giving her tour members free reign to go off and do what they like when desired.
Overall, I highly recommend One Life (and Beth!) if you’re looking for a casual, informative, and fun tour around Japan that gives you a track to follow around the country, but also allows for flexible spots of time to enjoy other experiences at your leisure.

If you visit in the summer like me, please please come prepared for the weather! It can get so hot but there are lots of ways to manage: cooling sprays/wipes, umbrellas to help with shade etc.
The highlight of the trip for me was all the time I Kyoto - it's such a beautiful place with lots of history and culture to enjoy (and lots of shopping).
When you're packing, pack light! A backpack is best because there's lots of steps in train stations and a big suitcase would be really difficult to get around easily.

There are multiple hostels to do laundry (detergent is included in the price of the machine), and with the amount of travelling, I wouldn’t recommend bringing any more than 10kg. It was 35-39 degrees with high humidity on our July-August tour, and your shoulders will be thanking you for a light bag! Beth took the walking parts of the tour at a great pace, allowing little aircon stops along the way in nearby convenience stores and always making sure we’re feeling good and staying hydrated. We used mini fans, umbrellas, sweat rags and my hiking water bag came in great use drinking up to 3 litres each day we were out. Pocari Sweat is also a must drink!! There are plenty of vending machines around for a relatively decent price 120 yen, 60p ish.
The Kaminarimon gate on the first evening was beautiful, quiet in comparison to the day and had the opportunity to explore the temple at our own leisure.
The various foods at both Shibuya (strawberry and grape sweet sticks) and Omoide Yokocho (stingray fin) were key highlights.
The Hakone geopark was much cooler in climate and we appreciated the rain. Mt Fuji was a little shy, but it was awesome to see the native sulfur and steaming vents from the underlying geothermal system. We had a black egg, boiled in the geothermal spring water, and were told we’ll live 7 years longer!
With the Essentials Tour, we managed to see many more things at our own pace, including DisneySea in Tokyo and making our own chopsticks in Kyoto. With the heat, the Essentials Tour was a perfect choice as the downtime allowed for extra showering!
The hostels got better, my favourite being in Osaka.
My favourite day was the UNESCO world heritage site at Kiyomizu temple. The uphill walk was tough in the heat, but short, the views were worth it. I definitely preferred Kyoto and would have enjoyed more time in Kyoto and Osaka over Tokyo.
Be prepared to walk 15-20km per day! But it’s so worth it! Thanks again One Life and Beth 🇯🇵

Beth our tour guide was great, so helpful with free time options and always sending different options in the group chat based on everyone different interests. If you are pressed on time for your trip this is perfect. I would recommend staying a few days later as there is only one night in Osaka and it’s close to Hiroshima if you want to add that to your experience. I’m vegetarian and the food options were limited but Beth did her best and I was never left hungry with meals included in the tour. I travelled with my partner and three friends, the tour catered to that and were roomed together where we could. All in all had a great time with great memories and i definitely want to come back and explore more. Cheers one life ✌🏻 and Arigatō Beth! Xx

Bono could give more insights to culture and living in the Philippines than our previous guide. He was caring, helpful and fun... A real star!
