Andes Mountains Tours & Trips
Quito's historic center sits at 2,850 meters, and the views? Otherworldly. Ecuador straddles the middle of the world, and the Quitsato Sundial marks the equator precisely. Visit the Highlands and rainforests to see dramatic transitions, while the Andes divide the country into Pacific coast, mountains, and Amazon basin. Ecuador packs ecosystem diversity into compact geography. Come see for yourself.

The tour organizers, Kanto Peru Tours, did an outstanding job. Their communication was excellent, the tour covered everything we wanted to see, the guides were outstanding and everything worked like clockwork in terms of schedules. I would use them again without question.

We did the 5D/4N trek which was at a slower pace which suited us very well. The trek was well-organised with small details thoughtfully provided, such as coca tea in the morning and a nice bowl of warm water for washing. The chef and his team were really great in cooking food that I could have which gave me great confidence in managing my food allergies and having good nutrition on the trek. This is a challenging trek due to uneven and slippery rock paths and very steep climbs. And the altitude of course. Our guide really helped us all through the tough parts when our legs were very tired and he was so supportive and reassuring. He also made sure we had excellent information about the history and the wildlife which was brilliant so I really appreciated the wonder of Machu Pichu when we finally arrived. The porters were also amazing and ensured we had a comfortable camp set up for us at the end of a long hiking day. The Inca Trail path itself is very challenging because it is made of uneven rocks, goes up and down, and has many steep stairs that are up and down. You need to have a pretty good level of fitness and good knees to do this walk comfortably. Do stair training to prepare for the trek. Do take the time to acclimatise - you need 4-5 days and you will still find yourself puffing at over 4000 m. We used everything suggested on the Alpaca Expedition equipment list. Bring electrolytes and meds to treat and manage diarrhea in case you eat something disagreeable before you leave. Having diarrhea on this trek is truly awful. The water provided on the trek is boiled and filtered and is good for drinking. And the porters make sure there are bowls and soap for handwashing. Go for it!

Our tour to Peru and Machu Picchu through G-Adventures was awesome. The tour guide was friendly and very well organized so we ended up everywhere on time. The hotels were typical tourist hotels, however they were all well maintained, clean and had comfortable beds. We took the optional cooking class in Cusco, which was a lot of fun. Overall 10/10!

Best time to visit Andes Mountains
- Spring 2026
Spring is when the mountain flowers start blooming in the Andes, making it perfect for combining archaeology with nature walks. The classic Inca Trail sees stable weather this time of year, and our travelers tell us it's their favorite season for hiking these ancient paths. You'll spend time in the Sacred Valley visiting local weaving cooperatives, exploring Moray's circular terraces and connecting with local communities. The Salkantay Trek offers a more challenging option with varied landscapes, expert guides and surprisingly tasty meals at camp. Many routes include time at Machu Picchu, Cusco's historic center, the Leymebamba Museum with its collection of 200 mummies and also walks in cloud forests full of unique birds.

- Summer 2026
Summer in the Andes mixes city culture with wilderness exploration. You can start in Buenos Aires learning tango moves before heading to Patagonia's untamed landscapes. El Calafate's glacier region is particularly special - you'll take boats right up to towering ice walls and hike through forests that few visitors get to see. The Machu Picchu treks come with porters who somehow serve up amazing meals at 4,000-meter camps. Our travelers love taking the cable car to the ancient Kuélap fortress, then hiking to spot toucans and monkeys near the 770-meter Gocta waterfall and also exploring remote mountain villages.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
Autumn brings excellent conditions for Inca Trail treks, with our travelers particularly appreciating the smaller crowds and comfortable hiking temperatures. Many tours combine the classic 4-day trail with time exploring Cusco's archaeological sites and local markets. The routes include early morning starts to catch sunrise at key points, experienced guides sharing deep cultural knowledge and excellent camp cooks preparing fresh meals at high altitudes. Some tours extend into the Chachapoyas region, where you'll explore ancient citadels, visit mummy museums and also hike through varied landscapes from deep canyons to cloud forests.

- Winter 2026 / 2027
Winter in the Andes brings unique opportunities for exploring Patagonia's dramatic landscapes. Our travelers particularly enjoy the W Trek in Torres del Paine during this season, noting fewer crowds and clearer skies. The winter routes through Argentina and Chile combine glacier visits with cultural experiences - you'll walk on Perito Moreno's ice fields, spot condors in Torres del Paine and explore traditional estancias. Several tours include fascinating stops at the thousand-year-old Milodón cave and also guided walks through the Patagonian Andean forest. Multi-day treks feature comfortable camping or lodge stays, with expert guides who really know how to handle winter conditions and help visitors spot local wildlife like guanacos, foxes and also rheas.
