Walk the volcanic trails around Lagoa das Furnas on São Miguel Island and try Cozido das Furnas, a traditional stew that's slow-cooked underground using geothermal heat. Check out the UNESCO-designated vineyards of Criação Velha on Pico Island, where centuries-old stone walls protect vines growing in black volcanic soil. Head to the Capelinhos Volcano interpretation centre on Faial Island to learn about the 1957 eruption that added a kilometre of land mass and buried the area in five metres of ash.
