What our customers ask about South Georgia Island Cruises & Tours
Can I get to South Georgia from Antarctica?
While South Georgia is surrounded by the Southern Ocean about 1400km east of the Falklands it's actually not part of Antarctica at all. You'll find it's part of a British Overseas Territory called South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands or SGSSI for short.
How do I actually get to South Georgia?
You'll need to travel by sea since there's no airport on the island. Your best bet is joining one of the expedition cruises that leave from either Ushuaia in Argentina or Montevideo in Uruguay. It's quite a journey taking about 4 days to reach the island but companies like TourRadar offer some great luxury cruises where you'll learn all about Antarctic history during the voyage.
What else can I do besides watching the wildlife?
There's actually loads of fascinating history to explore especially around whaling and exploration. You can visit Grytviken which used to be a whaling station but now houses the South Georgia Museum and the grave of the famous explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton. If you're up for an adventure you can even hike Shackleton's historic route the same one he took on his incredible journey for help back in 1916 after his ship got trapped in ice. It's pretty amazing to think he sailed 800 miles in a tiny 20-foot boat from Elephant Island just to reach King Haakon Bay here.
