What people love about Athens Tours
- 3-Day Private Tour: Mycenae, Olympia & Delphi with Local Tastings
We had a great time! The bus was comfortable, the driver was friendly and the tour guides (different in each site) were well organized and very informative. The sites are all must-see! The hotels, both in Arachova and Meteora, were clean and cozy. Overall the trip was excellent!
- Athens, Mykonos & Syros with 2 Guided Tours - Premium
Syros island was the highlight of our stay. The local guide was awesome, told us so many things about the island and and helped us take pics and enjoy great food. A few more days and it would be even better.
- Athens, Syros & Mykonos Tour - 7 Days - Premium
Our hotel in Athens was next to the Acropolis museum and within walking distance of the Acropolis. The Acropolis is a must see. So much history and also a great view of the whole of Athens. The hotel in Syros was placed to an excellent location, very close to the downtown restaurants. Mykonos was nice but windy. We would really suggest it.
What our customers ask about Athens Tours & Trips
What's the best time of year to visit Athens for comfortable sightseeing?
Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) provide the most pleasant conditions for exploring Athens with temperatures between 65-75°F. During these months visitors can explore ancient ruins and winding streets without the intense summer heat. The peak summer season from June through August brings temperatures up to 95°F making long walks through archaeological sites uncomfortable. Winter visitors face mild 55°F days but should pack for occasional rain showers. Early morning or late afternoon visits to the Acropolis prove most comfortable especially for guests at nearby hotels like the Athenaeum Grand. As one TourRadar traveler notes "We went in April and had perfect weather for walking tours - not too hot or crowded."
What are the best areas to stay in Athens?
Three neighborhoods stand out for visitors: Plaka Syntagma and Monastiraki. Each offers easy access to major sites and a lively street scene. The Acropolis Hill Hotel in Makrigianni gives guests front-row views of the ancient citadel while B4B Athens puts travelers in the heart of modern city life. For those seeking a more residential feel Koukaki has emerged as a favored choice among travelers. According to a TourRadar guest: "The Cypria Hotel's location was perfect - we could walk to everything and had amazing restaurants right outside our door."
What should I know about visiting the Acropolis in Athens?
The ancient citadel opens at 8am when crowds are thinnest and temperatures most forgiving. Adult tickets cost $25 with options to bundle multiple archaeological site entries. The modern Acropolis Museum at the base provides context for the ruins above. Both the Arion Hotel and Acropolis Hill Hotel offer quick access to the site. One TourRadar visitor suggests: "Visit the Acropolis first thing in the morning then spend the afternoon in the air-conditioned museum when it's hottest."
What are some unique local food experiences in Athens?
The beating heart of Athenian food culture lies in its traditional tavernas and bustling markets. The Central Market (Varvakios Agora) showcases local ingredients and quick bites. The Psyrri neighborhood serves classic dishes like moussaka and souvlaki while Kolonaki's restaurants offer contemporary takes on Greek cuisine. Dining at the Cypria Hotel's rooftop restaurant pairs local flavors with Acropolis views. A TourRadar guest reports: "The food tour through Athens' markets and traditional tavernas was a highlight - our guide introduced us to local specialties we would have never discovered on our own."
How much time should I spend in Athens to see the main attractions?
Most visitors need 3-4 days to see Athens without rushing. A typical schedule dedicates one day to the Acropolis complex and museum another to exploring historic Plaka and Monastiraki and a third day for sites like the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Ancient Agora. Hotels such as the Arion or B4B Athens put guests within walking distance of these landmarks. One TourRadar traveler shares: "We spent 4 days in Athens and felt it was perfect to see the main sites without rushing while still having time to wander the charming neighborhoods."
How safe is Athens for tourists?
The main tourist districts of Plaka Syntagma and Monastiraki maintain strong safety records. Central hotels including the Cypria provide round-the-clock security in neighborhoods where evening strolls are common. Visitors should stay alert in busy areas like the Central Market and metro stations just as in any major city. A TourRadar guest confirms: "We felt completely safe walking around the historic center at all hours - the streets were well-lit and always had other tourists and locals out enjoying the evening."
