This hike was incredible and truly a highlight of my visit to Europe! The mountains were stunning, and it was amazing to get to access the gorgeous remote villages. Having all accommodation and transport organised by Choose Balkans meant that all I had to worry about was walking and the weather! Brikena was very helpful and checked-in daily to make sure all was going to plan, and offered advice for the day based on the forecasts. The perfect way to see the lesser reached areas of the Balkans!

Would strongly recommend Brikena and Choose Balkans. Everything was organised for us and Brikena was very responsive throughout our trip whenever we had any enquiries. Overall hiking in this region was absolutely stunning. The guesthouses were really nice too, a very authentic way to spend our time in Albania.

Overall, the arranged accommodation locations are good. Some hotels are over our expectation but some are below e. g. The third night hotel in the town was the worst one, and no taxi transportation was arranged/covered by this tour.

What our customers ask about Self Guided Walking Holidays in Europe
What level of fitness is required for self-guided walking tours in Europe?
European self-guided walking tours offer routes for different abilities and experience levels. Less demanding options like the Tuscany tour features 4-hour daily walks on gentle vineyard paths. More challenging routes such as the E5 Alpine Crossing from Oberstdorf to Merano require experienced hikers comfortable with 6-hour daily walks and 1,250m elevation gains. A TourRadar traveler's note about the Pilgrim Trail from Salzburg reflects the moderate nature of many routes: "The days can be long but the views are worth it. Most of the route is paved so you can probably get away with hiking shoes or trail running shoes."
How does luggage transfer work on European self-guided walks?
The logistics are straightforward - you walk with a daypack while your main luggage moves between accommodations. Take the Picturesque Tuscany tour as an example: guests walk the daily 11-16km routes carrying essentials while their bags are transported from Hotel De la Pace in Florence to Hotel Stella Marina in Cecina. Mountain hut stays like the Refugi Tossal Verds on Mallorca's GR221 trail are the exception where overnight gear needs to be carried.
What is typically included in the accommodation on European walking tours?
The places you'll stay range from 3-4 star hotels to traditional guesthouses all chosen for their character and location. The Moselsteig tour showcases this variety with nights at the historic Feriendomizil am Lindenplatz in Bullay and Schlosshotel Petry in Treis-Karden. Some tours like the Star Hiking at Lake Wolfgangsee include extended stays - 7 nights at the 4-star Hotel Bergrose in Strobl with spa access. A TourRadar traveler confirms the quality on the Tuscany tour: "The organization is impeccable the hotels perfect."
What's the best time of year for self-guided walking in Europe?
Each region has its prime walking season. The Amalfi Coast welcomes walkers from April through October while Bavaria's King Ludwig Way is best explored May through September. The Baltic States see pleasant conditions from April to October. Tenerife stands out with year-round hiking thanks to 300+ days of sun per year with the Tui Blue Los Gigantes hotel seeing peak bookings in spring and fall. Many travelers find shoulder seasons offer fewer crowds and agreeable weather.
How much walking is typically involved each day on these tours?
Daily distances generally range between 10-21km (6-13 miles) taking 4-8 hours. The Lake Reschensee tour in Italy sets a typical pace with daily walks of 15-22km and elevation changes of 350-550m. The Rhine Walking tour averages 17-20km per day with moderate climbs. Routes often offer flexibility as noted by a TourRadar traveler: "The flexibility to take shorter routes when needed was appreciated."
What kind of meals are included in European self-guided walking tours?
Breakfast comes standard at your accommodation while lunch and dinner let you explore local food scenes independently. The Mallorca GR221 tour provides both breakfast and dinner at places like the mountain refuge Refugi Tossal Verds. On the Moselsteig tour breakfast at Hotel Karl Müller in Cochem starts your day before you discover local wine taverns for dinner. Special food experiences such as Chianti wine tastings appear on select itineraries.
