The upper deck gives you better views. The drive to Thurso takes about 4 hours. Fill your tank in Inverness as gas stations are limited after that.

The Orkney ferry crossing takes about 2 hours and depends on weather. Pack motion sickness medicine just in case. Bring warm clothes for Skara Brae as it's very exposed to North Sea winds. A visitor noted: "The Standing Stones of Stenness were incredible at sunset - but bring a windproof jacket as there's zero shelter."

Inverness Area
Visit Dunrobin Castle when it opens at 10:30 AM. See the gardens before your tour. Spend the afternoon at Culloden Battlefield. Start at the visitor center to understand the site's history before walking the moor. Look for red deer near your Inverness hotel at dusk.

Edinburgh
Start with the morning sheepdog demonstration at the Highland farm. Plan to reach Edinburgh after 3 PM when hotel check-in is quieter. Save room for the evening cooking class with whisky pairings by having a late lunch.

Edinburgh
Visit Edinburgh Castle right when it opens at 9:30 AM. The Crown Jewels get very busy by midday. Wear good walking shoes for the Royal Mile tour as the cobblestones are steep. Use your final afternoon to explore the hidden closes off the Royal Mile for quieter photo spots away from crowds.

Loch Ness and Northern Coast
Start at Culloden Battlefield when it opens at 9 AM. The visitor center offers an excellent look at the 1746 battle. Follow Loch Ness north to Wick and choose between the Old Pulteney whisky distillery or the Heritage Museum. The coastal drive offers beautiful views but take your time on the winding roads.

Orkney Islands
Take the hour-long morning ferry to the Orkneys. Visit the ancient village of Skara Brae early to avoid strong afternoon winds. Include stops at the Ring of Brodgar stone circle and Kirkwall's St. Magnus Cathedral to see different periods of Orkney history.
- Days 6-7
Isle of Skye and Glencoe
Cross to Skye over the Kyle of Lochalsh bridge. The Cuillin Hills create a dramatic backdrop. Stop for photos at Eilean Donan Castle. "The weather changes rapidly on Skye—pack waterproofs and layers even in summer." Move on to Glencoe where rangers lead walks explaining the Highland environment.

Great trip - no hiccups, hotels fine considering the remoteness of some. Driver, Nat, and Guide, Mike, should be congratulated for their work to make this trip so good.
- Scotland's Far North - 10 days
The only difficulty is occasionally being accommodated in B&Bs remote from restaurants. I do not mind a 15-minute walk in reasonable weather as long as the weather is hospitable. The last evening on the tour, we resorted to dining on packaged sandwiches from a nearby gas station. On other occasions the hotel dining was excellent. Overall, the trip was entirely pleasing and I would recommend it to others, subject to the advice to be prepared for uncertainty as to the quality of accommodations on any particular day.
