We had the TIME OF OUR LIVES on our private guided tour through Tanzania. Our guide Jackson went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed ourselves. He operated as both a driver, a translator, and a nature guide throughout the trip. Each morning we'd wake up around 6:30a, have a delicious breakfast at the various bush camps, then spend the entire day from 8am until 5pm seeing the sights and searching for wildlife. Jack was excellent at spotting animals, which can be very difficult to do in high grass. We saw loads of elephant (on average,30-40 per day), lions devouring a warthog carcass, mating, grooming and sleeping. We saw leopards doing all of those things too! Plenty of waterbuffalo and giraffes; honestly, you name it, we saw it, UP CLOSE! Each night we would head back to the camps which were all very well designed and clean. It's a bit unnerving planning a trip all the way to Tanzania, from your home computer here in the States (los angeles to be exact), but once we arrived and were in the hands of the Almighty Kilimanjaro staff, all of our troubles melted away. I cannot think of a single negative thing to say about this very well-run company. The booking process was very clear and they remained available for contact all the way up through our arrival. And again, our guide was such a wonderful person to spend time with. Very understanding personality, very funny, and kept my husband and I entertained the entire time. There are so many tour providers for Serengeti, Tarangire, Ndutu and Ngorongoro regions, but this one was by far the best. And VERY AFFORDABLE compared to others. Highly recommend.

There's also a solid 8-day classic safari taking you through Lake Manyara, Serengeti and also Ngorongoro. Our TourRadar customers really love those early morning crater descents - that's when animals are most active and the light makes for great photos. Spring brings clear skies and pleasant temperatures to Ngorongoro. Many of our travelers go for the 6-day Tanzania taste tour, which nicely mixes wildlife and culture. You'll spend time at the Shanga Community Project, watch Tarangire's elephant herds and explore the crater thoroughly. The 3-day highland trek is another good pick - you walk the crater rim with rangers, visit Maasai communities and might catch flamingos at Empakaii Crater lake. Summer tours make the most of the dry season's wildlife viewing. The 8-day Serengeti Trail gets great feedback from our customers who enjoy camping in the parks - they often talk about drifting off to sleep while listening to nocturnal animals. Early morning drives really deliver, and you can add balloon safaris over the plains. The guides excel at following the wildebeest migration this time of year, and you'll have plenty of opportunities to watch the impressive numbers of predators and prey in the crater.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
Fall is prime time for wildlife as animals gather near water sources. The Serengeti Trail stays popular - our TourRadar customers specifically mention how the guides know exactly where to position vehicles for optimal viewing. If you're short on time but want to experience the crater's unique ecosystem, the 3-day Ngorongoro focus tour fits well. Hikers find ideal autumn conditions on the highland trek, exploring the crater rim and nearby highlands, with good chances to spot leopards in the early hours. World Adventure Tours has built quite a reputation in Tanzania - our travelers keep telling us about their safari guides going well beyond expectations. Moses, Daniel, Obed, Joseph, Sam and also Mushi really understand the wildlife patterns and always seem to get their groups to the right spots at the right times. They've mastered tracking the Big Five and know exactly where to position vehicles for the wildebeest migration. The accommodation side is handled beautifully by Zara Properties, who run the camps and lodges in Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. Our guests often mention how nice it is to return to comfortable beds and hot showers after a full day exploring. The camps blend authentic safari atmosphere with proper amenities, and the staff there really look after everyone. The guides' deep knowledge comes through in how they explain animal behavior and ecosystems - they'll point out subtle details like bird calls that signal nearby predators or tracks that tell stories of overnight activity. They're also great at adjusting routes based on recent wildlife movements and weather conditions. This practical expertise paired with Zara's well-placed properties means visitors get both amazing wildlife encounters and a genuinely comfortable base. It's a combination that works particularly well for people who want real safari immersion without roughing it too much.

Is Ngorongoro Crater connected to the Serengeti?
While they're neighbors the Ngorongoro Crater is actually its own conservation area right next to Serengeti National Park. You'll catch the incredible Wildebeest Migration in both places from December to March but they're quite different experiences really. The crater's this amazing natural bowl covering 260km² and it's packed with wildlife - you'll find the highest concentration of predators in Africa here plus some rare black rhinos and about 30000 animals. The Serengeti's much bigger spreading out over 14750km² with everything from woodlands to those famous endless plains.
What makes this place so special it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site?
The Ngorongoro area's got this really unique double UNESCO status for both nature and culture. Down on the crater floor you've got this perfectly balanced ecosystem with more than 400 bird species and the highest concentration of big predators you'll find anywhere in Africa. But there's more - they've found amazing human evolution evidence here including these incredible 3.6-million-year-old human footprints at Laetoli. What's really special is how wildlife and Maasai pastoralists have figured out how to live together here - they've been grazing their cattle in the area for hundreds of years.
What kind of local cultural experiences can visitors join in with?
You can really get involved with Maasai life at Nainokanoka village and around the crater rim. There's lots to try - join beadwork workshops learn about traditional cattle blessing ceremonies or go on medicinal plant walks with village elders. If you head to Mto wa Mbu village near the crater you can taste banana beer with the Chagga people and learn local cooking techniques using ingredients from right there.
What are some hidden gems in Ngorongoro beyond the main crater?
About 40km northeast there's this beautiful place called Empakaii Crater where you can hike in peace and watch pink flamingos on the alkaline lake. The Olmoti Crater trek takes 4-6 hours and you'll discover hidden waterfalls and mountain plants you won't see anywhere else. Between the craters there's amazing birdwatching with over 500 different species. The Olduvai Gorge museum's fascinating with all its ancient discoveries and nearby you've got these incredible Shifting Sands - these crescent-shaped dunes made of volcanic ash that actually move across the plains about 17 meters every year.
