What our customers ask about 7 Day Solar Eclipse Tours & Trips
What makes the 2026 Solar Eclipse in Iceland special?
This is Iceland's first total solar eclipse since 1954, and you won't see another one here until 2196. What makes it even better is that Iceland offers some of the clearest viewing conditions you'll find anywhere, with very little light pollution and wide-open views of the horizon. If you're in Arnarstapi, you'll get to experience the total eclipse for 2 minutes and 2 seconds - one of the longest viewing times in the world. The eclipse happens on August 12, 2026, and western Iceland is one of just a few special spots globally where you can see it in full, along with Greenland, northern Spain, and northeast Portugal.
What are the key viewing locations for the 2026 Solar Eclipse in Iceland?
You'll find excellent viewing spots across Iceland, but Arnarstapi is really the sweet spot. Here, at 64°46'12.1"N 23°37'02.9"W, you can watch the total eclipse for a full 2 minutes and 2 seconds. If you're in Reykjavik (at 64°08'50.1"N 21°54'26.4"W), you'll get almost a minute of totality. Arnarstapi is a small fishing village with perfect views across the Denmark Strait. Reykjavik works great too - there's hardly any light pollution, and since there aren't any tall buildings, nothing will block your view. For places to stay, you can book a room at Hotel Arnarstapi or, if you're in the capital, try the Fosshotel Reykjavik.
What kind of preparation and equipment is provided for viewing the Solar Eclipse?
Every tour includes special eclipse glasses so you can safely watch this rare event. You'll have expert guides who've trained with the Icelandic Astronomical Society - they speak English and will explain everything you need to know. The tours take you to exact spots along the eclipse's central path, and your guide will let you know precisely when each phase begins and ends. When the total eclipse happens, you can take off your glasses to see the sun's corona. If conditions are good, you might even spot Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, and Mars.
What activities are included before and after the Solar Eclipse viewing?
The tours pack in plenty of Iceland's highlights around the eclipse viewing. You'll explore the Golden Circle, including Thingvellir National Park (a UNESCO site) and watch the Strokkur geyser shoot into the sky. You can walk behind Seljalandsfoss waterfall, stand in awe of Skogafoss, and check out the LAVA show in Vik where real lava flows at 1,100°C. Most tours include time to relax in either the Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon - you'll get towels, mud masks, and drinks included. You can also try some local foods, like fresh rye bread baked in the ground using geothermal heat near Geysir.
What type of accommodation is offered during Solar Eclipse tours?
You'll find a good mix of places to stay during your eclipse tour. In Reykjavik, you might be at the downtown Fosshotel Reykjavik or the fancy Hotel Borg. Out in the countryside, you could stay at Hotel Rangá in Hella, which has its own observatory for stargazing and northern lights viewing. If you're near the eclipse viewing spot in Arnarstapi, you'll stay at Hotel Arnarstapi with nice views of the coast. Most tours include 4-5 nights of accommodation, and all hotels are picked because they're close to where you'll watch the eclipse and other sights. Every place includes modern comforts and serves traditional Icelandic breakfast.
How physically demanding are these Solar Eclipse tours?
These tours work well for most people age 12 and up, and you won't need to be super fit. Most walks are pretty easy, like getting to the viewing spots in Arnarstapi or walking along the coast near Reykjavik. If you want more adventure, you can choose to hike on Solheimajokull glacier or explore the rocky coastline of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. You'll travel between places in comfortable buses, stopping regularly at places like Gullfoss waterfall and Thingvellir National Park. The main spots for watching the eclipse are easy to get to, with very little walking needed.
