10 Day Northern Pakistan Itinerary, incl. Hunza Valley and Fairy Meadows
A spectacular 10-day route covers 4 major destinations: Islamabad's cultural sites, Fairy Meadows' pristine landscapes, Hunza Valley's historic forts, and Nanga Parbat Base Camp trek. The package includes domestic flights and traditional mountain lodge accommodations.
- Day 1
Islamabad Arrival
Fly into Islamabad in the morning to help with jet lag. The airport transfer takes about 45 minutes, but plan for longer during rush hour. One traveler noted: "The communication before arrival was a bit rough, but everything ran smoothly once we landed."
- Day 2
Islamabad to Hunza Valley
Take an early flight to Gilgit (one hour). Weather can affect mountain flights, so keep your schedule flexible. The drive from Gilgit to Hunza Valley offers views of Rakaposhi peak. Stop at the Rakaposhi viewpoint before reaching Karimabad (Hunza's main town) in late afternoon. At 2,300m altitude, take time to adjust.

Central Hunza Exploration
Explore Hunza's cultural sites. Visit UNESCO-listed Baltit Fort in the morning for the best photo lighting. Spend your afternoon at Altit Fort and its historic village. A recent visitor shared: "The friendliness of the people of Hunza is something we have never experienced anywhere in the world. Their honesty, warmth, and above all the beauty."
- Days 4-5
Upper Hunza Adventures
Visit Upper Hunza's main attractions. Go boating on Attabad Lake early before the afternoon winds pick up. Cross the Hussaini Suspension Bridge for incredible views. Bring warm clothes as temperatures can drop quickly, even during summer.

Journey to Fairy Meadows
A challenging but worthwhile day. Drive to Raikot Bridge (1.5 hours), take a jeep to Tattu Village, then hike 6km to Fairy Meadows (2-3 hours at 3,200m). Pack light for two nights in a daypack. Good hiking boots are essential on the loose trails.
- Day 7
Nanga Parbat Base Camp
Pick between the full base camp trek (3,800m) or easier Beyal Camp hike (3,500m). One traveler recalls: "The stargazing on the first night and the view of Nanga Parbat in the morning were unbelievable moments." Start early for clear mountain views before clouds appear.
- Day 8
Return to Gilgit
Head back down the same route. The descent is easier but stay careful on loose sections. Spend a quiet evening in Gilgit exploring local restaurants in the main bazaar.
- Day 9
Gilgit to Islamabad
Fly back to Islamabad in the morning. Visit the Pakistan Monument for sunset and the Faisal Mosque in late afternoon. Buy souvenirs at Centaurus Mall.

Departure
Book afternoon flights to avoid morning traffic. Plan for 3 hours at the airport for international departures.

- Day 1
Islamabad Arrival & Orientation
Plan for a morning arrival to make the most of your first day. The airport is about 45 minutes from central Islamabad but traffic during rush hour (7-9 AM) can extend this. Spend your day getting settled and exploring the modern F-7 district which has plenty of cafes and shops.
- Days 2-3
Skardu & Shigar Valley
Book the first flight to Skardu (2 hours) since mountain weather often affects afternoon flights. Explore the Shigar Fort area to experience Balti culture and visit the stunning Sarfaranga Cold Desert. As one traveler shared: "The contrast between snow-capped peaks and desert dunes in Skardu is mind-blowing. Bring layers - desert temperatures drop dramatically after sunset."
- Days 4-5
Central Hunza Valley
The drive from Skardu to Hunza takes 5-6 hours along the spectacular Karakoram Highway. Stay in Karimabad to easily access historical sites. Get to Baltit Fort early before the tour buses arrive. Take in sunset at the Duikar viewpoint for incredible valley views but book a local driver who knows the rough road conditions.
- Days 6-7
Upper Hunza & Khunjerab Pass
Start early for the Khunjerab Pass trip. It is the world's highest border crossing but snow can block access from November to March. Stop at the beautiful Attabad Lake created by a 2010 landslide. A recent visitor noted: "The Hussaini Suspension Bridge looks scary in photos but has actually been reinforced. Still only cross if you're comfortable with heights."
- Day 8
Naltar Valley
Perfect for skiing in winter or hiking in summer. The jeep track is bumpy so consider motion sickness pills. Winter visitors need very warm clothing as temperatures can fall below -10°C. Summer travelers should still pack warm layers since mountain weather changes fast.
- Days 9-10
Return to Islamabad
Take a morning flight from Gilgit to Islamabad weather permitting. On your final day visit Shah Faisal Mosque (women need headscarves) and enjoy dinner at Monal Restaurant for great city views. Plan 90 minutes for your airport transfer on departure day due to traffic.

The Exploria team did a fantastic job in arranging our holiday in Gilgit-Baltistan. They were knowledgeable, had excellent contacts, and acted quickly when domestic flights were delayed or cancelled to make alternative arrangements. We went during the Israel/US - Iran, and Ajmal explained the security/fuel station in G-B so that we could make an informed decision. Majid communicated well throughout about our transport arrangements, and Rashid was very good driver/guide throughout our trip. We had a memorable holiday.
This was a truly magical adventure. Hunza has some of the most beautiful landscapes, but what really makes it special are the people. I've never felt so welcomed in a place before, nor have I ever seen such towering mountains, that too so close to camp. I had my reservations about traveling in Pakistan as a woman, but I was so, so wrong. I felt safe and well looked after the whole trip. I'm definitely coming back!
