7 Days in Georgia, incl. Tbilisi and Svaneti
The grand circuit covers 1470km across Georgia, connecting 10 cities from UNESCO-listed Mtskheta to remote Ushguli village. Six nights in hotels/guesthouses, 19 meals, and activities ranging from Borjomi Park hikes to Vardzia Cave-City tours complete the experience.
- Day 1
Tbilisi to Akhaltsikhe
Leave Tbilisi early and drive to Mtskheta, Georgia's ancient capital. Visit the 6th-century Jvari Church for sweeping views of the city. Drive on to Borjomi for a 3-hour hike along the Borjomula River but bring good shoes since the trails get muddy. Finish your day at Nika Khachapuridze's wine cellar in Akhaltsikhe with a traditional Georgian dinner.
- Day 2
Vardzia Cave Exploration
Visit the impressive Vardzia cave complex, built 13 stories up into the rock face. Go early to beat the afternoon heat, particularly in summer. Take photos at Rabati Castle and Khertvisi Fortress along the way. Spend your afternoon learning to make Imeretian khachapuri (cheese bread) during a cooking class in Sazano village.

Racha Province Wine Country
Travel through beautiful Racha region and stop at Shaori Reservoir for photos. Visit the 10th-century Nikortsminda Cathedral and medieval Barakoni Church. Sample unique mountain-grown Usakhelauri wines in Qorenishi village. A tip for the bumpy roads in Racha: sit up front if you get carsick.

Svaneti Mountains
Head into the remote Svaneti region, famous for its medieval tower houses. Take a moderate 6km hike from Becho village to Shdugra waterfall with Mount Ushba views. One visitor noted: "The landscape was very impressive. While some roads were challenging, our driver navigated them safely." Bring layers since mountain weather changes fast.

Ushguli Village
See Europe's highest permanent settlement at Ushguli (2,200m). Look around the UNESCO-listed Svan towers and 10th-century Lamaria church with its old frescoes. It takes about 2 hours on unpaved roads from Mestia. Go early before afternoon fog comes in.
- Day 6
Black Sea Coast
Come down from the mountains to see the huge Enguri Dam before reaching the Black Sea at Anaklia. After some beach time, join a traditional Georgian supra (feast) where a tamada (toastmaster) leads age-old dining traditions. The mix of mountain and coastal culture makes this day special.

Return to Tbilisi
On your way back to the capital, stop at the interesting cable car city of Chiatura and the 40m-high Katskhi Pillar monastery. You'll cover about 220 miles today so start early. The drive shows off Georgia's diverse landscapes.

- Day 1
Tbilisi Exploration
Visit Trinity Cathedral around 10 AM before the crowds gather. Take the cable car up to Narikala Fortress, but wear sturdy shoes. "Walking down from Narikala offers incredible city views, but the stone steps can be treacherous – stick to the handrails." Spend your evening exploring the sulfur bath district of Abanotubani.

Mtskheta & Journey to Gudauri
Leave Tbilisi early to avoid traffic. Drive to Mtskheta (30 minutes) and start at Jvari Monastery. The morning light makes for great photos of the river below. Spend about an hour at Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. Take the Georgian Military Highway to Gudauri (2-3 hours) and stop at Ananuri Complex. The road gets quite winding, so bring motion sickness pills if you need them.

Kazbegi Region
Get an early start to Stepantsminda (formerly Kazbegi). You'll need a 4x4 vehicle for the bumpy 30-minute drive to Gergeti Trinity Church at 2,170m. A recent visitor shared: "The hike up to Gergeti Church is challenging but worth every step. Go slowly and bring water – the altitude hits you fast." Try to see Mt. Kazbegi in the morning before clouds move in.

Kartli Region & Borjomi
Drive to Gori (2 hours) and visit the Stalin Museum if you're interested. Next is the cave city of Uplistsikhe. Wear good shoes since the ancient rock stairs are smooth from centuries of use. It's about 1.5 hours to Borjomi, where you can try mineral water right from the spring. The park has well-marked trails but watch for mud after rain.

Vardzia Cave Monastery
Get to Vardzia by 10 AM (2-hour drive) before it gets too hot. You'll climb lots of stairs and walk through narrow passages in the cave monastery, so skip this if you're claustrophobic. Bring a flashlight for the deeper caves. In the afternoon, visit the restored Rabati Castle in Akhaltsikhe.

Lake District Return to Tbilisi
Take the scenic route back through the lakes region. The road by Lake Paravani isn't great but offers beautiful mountain views. Plan for 4-5 hours with photo stops. You'll reach Tbilisi by late afternoon, perfect for some final Old Town shopping.

Final Morning in Tbilisi
Spend your last morning at the Georgian National Museum or browse Soviet memorabilia and local art at the Dry Bridge Market. Most international flights leave in the afternoon. Give yourself an hour to reach the airport since Tbilisi traffic can be unpredictable.

- Day 2
Tbilisi & Mtskheta
Explore the 15th-century Abanotubani district with its famous sulfur baths. Visit Narikala Fortress using the cable car for an easier ascent. Browse local crafts along Shardeni Street. Take a short 30-minute drive to Mtskheta, the ancient capital, to see the 6th-century Jvari Church with its stunning river views. End your day learning to make traditional satsivi in a Georgian cooking class. Wear comfortable shoes for walking the cobblestone streets and hills of old town.

Wine Region - Kakheti Province
Travel east to wine country, about 2 hours from Tbilisi. Visit Bodbe Convent for great views of the Alazani Valley and Caucasus mountains. Stop at Signagi, the "City of Love." Try traditional wine from qvevri clay vessels at a local marani. Take a morning hike to Nekresi Monastery before it gets too hot. Stay overnight at a winery hotel in Telavi.

Telavi & Wine Culture
Start early at Telavi's food market for the best produce selection. Visit the 11th-century Alaverdi Cathedral and Tsinandali Estate, birthplace of European-style Georgian wines. Stop for lunch at a family winery where portions are always generous. Head back to Tbilisi in the afternoon.

Georgian Military Highway to Kazbegi
Travel the scenic Georgian Military Highway toward the Caucasus Mountains. Stop to see Zhinvali Reservoir and Ananuri fortress. The views are perfect for photos. Continue past Gudauri ski resort and over Cross Pass at 2,379m. Consider motion sickness pills for the winding road. Spend the night in Stepantsminda.
- Day 6
Kazbegi Region & Hiking
See sunrise at Gergeti Trinity Church with views of Mt. Kazbek. Take a 4x4 to Juta village for a 4-5 hour hike in the Chaukhi Mountains. Pack extra clothes for changing mountain weather. Wear hiking boots, especially if the trails are wet. Return to Tbilisi for your final night.
