10 Day Central Europe Itinerary, incl. Prague and Budapest

Prague

Prague Castle
Day two starts at Prague Castle. Wear good walking shoes since the cobblestones can be tricky. Getting a local guide is worth it because the castle complex is huge and not well marked. Later, walk across Charles Bridge and explore Old Town Square. You can spend the afternoon in the Jewish Quarter or take a boat trip on the Vltava River.

Explore Neighborhoods
On day three, go beyond the tourist spots to neighborhoods like Vinohrady with its local beer gardens. Head up to Petřín Hill in the morning for great city views before it gets busy.

Prague to Vienna via Bratislava
Take a 4-hour coach ride to Vienna, stopping in Bratislava. The Old Town is perfect for lunch - try Slovak dumplings near Michael's Gate. You'll reach Vienna by late afternoon. Stay in the Innere Stadt for easy access to everything.

Vienna
Spend your first full day walking the Ringstrasse. One visitor shared: "The early morning access to Kunsthistorisches Museum was incredible - we had the Habsburg collections to ourselves." Make time for coffee and Sachertorte at Café Central.

Schönbrunn Palace
Start day six at Schönbrunn Palace. Book tickets online to skip lines. Take the U4 metro straight there from downtown. End your day with classical music at Musikverein or Konzerthaus.

Vienna to Budapest
The 3-hour drive through Hungarian wine country is beautiful. Stop in Győr to walk around and see its Baroque buildings. You'll get to Budapest's Castle District in time for sunset over the Danube.

Budapest
Visit Fisherman's Bastion early morning. A traveler noted: "The early morning light on the Parliament building from here is spectacular." Go to the thermal baths in late afternoon when crowds thin out - Széchenyi Baths are great around 4 PM.

Jewish Quarter and Boat Ride
Use day nine to see the Jewish Quarter and ruin bars. Have lunch at Market Hall - the traditional Hungarian food is upstairs. Take an evening boat ride to see the city lights.

Breakfast at New York Café
If time allows before leaving, have breakfast at New York Café. Book afternoon flights if possible since morning traffic can be slow.

Prague

Holašovice and Český Krumlov
Drive 2.5 hours south to these UNESCO sites. Visit Holašovice in the morning for the best light to photograph its Baroque farmhouses. Head to Český Krumlov for lunch. The castle gardens have limited hours in winter so check the schedule. The castle tower offers the best views of the medieval town but be ready for steep narrow stairs.

Telč and Třebíč
These UNESCO towns are an hour apart. Arrive in Telč early to see the Renaissance square before shops open. Plan two hours for Třebíč's Jewish Quarter. The cobblestones can be slippery in wet weather so wear sturdy shoes.

Vienna
Drive two hours from Třebíč. Spend your first afternoon exploring the historic center. On day two visit Schönbrunn Palace early. Book skip-the-line tickets online. A recent visitor noted: "The Palace gets incredibly busy after 11 AM. Going early meant we had some rooms almost to ourselves."

Bratislava
Take a one-hour train or drive from Vienna. You can walk the Old Town in a day. Start at the castle for morning views of the Danube then explore the medieval streets. Note that many restaurants close between lunch and dinner service.
- Days 8-9
Budapest
The trip from Bratislava takes 2.5 hours. Stop at Győr and Esztergom on the way. Remember the Esztergom Basilica closes early on Sundays. Visit thermal baths in the morning to avoid crowds. The metro system is a good way to get around but always validate your tickets.

Departure
Flying from Ferenc Liszt Airport? Allow 45 minutes for a taxi from central Pest especially during morning rush hour.

Kraków & Surroundings
Visit the Wieliczka Salt Mine, located 135m underground. Wear good walking shoes for the 800 steps down. You can take a lift back up. Spend your afternoon in Kraków's Old Town. The next day, take a morning tour of Wawel Castle and St. Mary's Basilica, then try making pierogi. A recent visitor shared: "Making pierogi with a local family was the highlight - they taught us the trick of getting the dough just thin enough without breaking."

Auschwitz & Olomouc
Start with Auschwitz-Birkenau in the morning. Book tickets ahead to skip the lines. The 4-hour drive to Olomouc gives you time to reflect. This Czech city offers beautiful Baroque fountains without Prague's crowds. Try the local Olomouc cheese, known for its strong flavor.

Český Krumlov
Travel through South Bohemia, stopping in Brno and Třeboň. Reach Český Krumlov in late afternoon after most tourists leave. Plan half a day for the castle complex. Get the best photos of the town's red roofs from the castle tower early morning.

Prague
On your way to Prague, stop at UTOPIA cellar in Obratan for cider tasting. Try to arrive in Prague by early afternoon for a walk through Old Town before leaving. Consider staying an extra night if possible. Prague needs more time to explore properly.
