We were lucky to have sunny weather and see the aurora lights but more than that we got really lucky with our tour guide Branka. She had such a positive energy, there was no problem she wouldn’t be able to solve and she had an interesting story to tell about all locations we went to ( plus the whole playlist of music we listen was carefully selected just for the trip). I wouldn’t usually go for a bus tour while on holiday but this one exceeded all my expectations. It’s a great way to see Scotland and learn about the history and culture. Thank you Branka, you’re the best :-) I’ll definitely join your tour again when I’m in Scotland.

Overall a well-varied and complete 5 days.
My friend and I loved the tour, visited beautiful places with enough free time off the bus. Dave, our tourguide, was quite the character, loved it haha!

Listening to Dave, you can easily tell he knows his stuff and him mixing the stories with some good sense of humour made for a colourful and fun trip. All in all, the 3-day Isle of Skye tour is highly recommended. Thanks Dave and the Macbackpackers crew!

I am giving it 5 stars because of all the amazing people that work there. Everyone at Castle Rock Hostel and the hostel in Skye was super welcoming and helpful and Dave…Great tour for the price paid!
I am giving it 5 stars because of all the amazing people that work there. Everyone at Castle Rock Hostel and the hostel in Skye was super welcoming and helpful and Dave our bus driver/tour guide had the most epic commentary of the sights (cheers to his music taste as well). Accommodation at Kyleakin was very decent, I personally didn’t experience any problems with cold water or anything else. It’s true that the rooms are a bit tight, but after you’ve spent 8 hours with 29 people in a bus, having to sleep in a room of 6 is not such big of a deal. You can get a towel for a small charge (I am not sure how much, less than a pound I think), but there aren’t any toiletries in the bathroom, so make sure to get some. For food there are two options: get something from the store each day or you can go to Kyleakin’s two pubs that are both situated within a 5 mins walk from the hostel. I paid for fish and chips and a pint of beer £17.00 at King Hakoon’s Pub.
The two things I didn’t like on the tour were the fact that our guide said in the beginning we will discuss the itinerary which didn’t actually happen (to be honest on the second day he once gave us the option to chose between a castle ruins and a brewery and another stop, but just for that). The other thing was that the last day was quite disappointing – we saw Ben Nevis for 20 mins and because of the full car parks at Glencoe we missed all the best stops there (I acknowledge its not the guide’s fault), then we were dropped at a castle that was famous for being in GoT as a sign suggested, but we had no other info about it and it wasn't really impressive, that’s why all of our group decided to skip it and go to the nearby river instead. Perhaps we could have gone to the Kelpies or William Wallace monument or Stirling castle instead…
Overall this tour is a great introduction to the most beautiful places in Scotland, so you can try it and just mark the places which you would like to go back and visit at your own pace, because Scotland it truly amazing place and Isle of Skye in unbelievably beautiful!!!

Would recommend to all young adult backpackers who want to enjoy good company and fun atmosphere.
You get to explore Scotland freely on the many stops along the bus route. Just note that big portion of your time will be spent on the bus as the bus route is quite long. This means there is no time to idle around during stops so make use of your time. You also dont need any fancy hiking gear because you dont have time to wonder too far. But you will still be able to go get all your lovely pics of Scottish nature.
Accommodation and breakfast are pretty basic as you you would expect on a backpacker budget. But its good enough for young travelers who do not want to spend too much. You also get to meet other travellers of your age who probably want to hang out and have a good time aswell.
I had an excellent tour with Dave who was very knowledgeable and honest about what was worth seeing or not and had great stories to keep us entertained!

The long and short of it is, this was my first solo trip and first time staying in hostels. I kept an open-mind going in and was perfectly satisfied with all elements of this trip. I kept an open-mind going in and was perfectly satisfied with all elements of this trip. Itinerary did not feel rushed. Lots of time spent exploring. Hostels were clean, cozy, cheap, and for the most part comfortable. The scenery was bonkers! Beautiful! To top it all off, we had a great, diverse group of tourists on the bus.
MacBackpackers is a great option to get you up into the Scottish Highlands and show you a good time!
Our tour guide, Dave, was a real comedian. He never really held back when telling us about the history surrounding the Highlands and each sight on our itinerary. I greatly appreciated his effort to get us to our highlight destinations early, and before the rush of other tours came around. I’m a big fan of getting up and out the door early.
On top of that, we stopped at some really great vantage points for photos that you may not get access to on other tours. Despite having a full group of around twenty people, it still very much felt like a small-group tour.
It was amazing tour and Dave was a great guide full of funny stories!

We saw well known sights like the Faerie Pools. Loch Ness, Old Man of Storr and Glen Coe, but also many other cool stops I wouldn't have known about otherwise (Lealt Falls, Kilt Rock). However, the sights were just a part of the experience of this tour. Our guide Dave really made this experience fun and memorable. He is definitely the funniest bus driver I've ever met who has a talent for story telling. Dave told us many stories about history and folklore as we sat back and enjoyed the view of the passing scenery, often laughing hysterically at jokes and embellishments. We packed a lot into this tour and it went by quickly, but I was quite satisfied with this thorough introduction to Isle of Skye.
The accommodation was nice, clean and comfortable; no complaints. However, if you have any dietary restrictions I'd advise bringing food with you and using the kitchen at the hostel as the town is small and there aren't too many options.

There was never a dull moment and it felt like everything was well planned - with enough flexibility to account for weather and group preferences. Dave was a fantastic tour guide - quite the comedian, and also thoughtful and kowledgable on the history of the areas you travel through. Music and jokes were always on par. Highly recommend - this was a great and relaxed way to see SO many things in the short time span of 3 days!

Dave is truly the best guide one can get - funny, kind, enthusiastic, knowledgeable, generous and truly loving his country. Also an incredible professional - he planned the tour to the tiniest of details, including preparing the most epic playlist with songs matching the stories he told us and the sights we visited. Dave's absolutely hilarious stories allowed us to learn so much about Scotland without even realising that knowledge was being imparted on us. Dave also wonderfully adapted the itinerary to suit our hiking-loving group (therefore allowing us to experience as much of the gorgeous and breathtaking highlands on our feet as possible) which was amazing. A truly wonderful trip - thank you, Dave and Macbackpackers - I cannot wait to be back and join another one of your fantastic tours!

I did the 5 day tour of the Highlands and Skye and had an amazing time. I was impressed with how many things we were able to fit in each day without feeling rushed. I thought Dave was an awesome guide and it felt like he was really trying to tailor the tour to be the best it could be (e.g. spending extra time at one location and skipping another) even though it could be easier for him to just follow a set plan. I also feel like he didn't get enough credit for playing a lot of good music to match the stories he told. I highly recommend this tour and Dave.

Not to mention his jokes - which of course were totally dry & crude, which probably made that the best part! :P

He was extremely flexible in modifying the itinerary as necessary or desired (by us). Overall, he bent over backwards to make us happy. I love the "mom-and pop" vibe I got from MacBackpackers as opposed to other tours I've done in the past with larger companies.
My only complaint is with the accommodations in Skye, they are very tight, but more importantly, none of the toilets would flush properly.

I could not recommend this tour enough, for everyone, but especially for people travelling on their own. The ridiculous beauty of the countryside coupled with the running commentary made it one of my most enjoyable experiences I’ve had travelling! Dave’s knowledge & knack of storytelling was beyond compare! Captivating, interesting & unfaltering in his delivery! Not to mention his jokes - which of course were totally dry & crude, which probably made that the best part! :P
Can’t wait to visit Scotland again & will definitely be booking another Macbackpackers tour when I do :)

He has a brilliant sense of humour and is great to chat with when you’re off the bus. The tour overall is well thought out and you’re never on the bus for too long between sites. I’d highly recommend the trip and if you get Dave as a driver you’ll have a grouse time.

It was really breathtaking. I am grateful that I made that decision to join. I don't think I have seen anything like it in my entire life. The landscape Dave showed us was just mind blowing and beautiful!
Dave was an excellent tour guide. He enriched the experience for me. He told plenty of fun stories and facts I would have never heard if I he hadn't shared them with us.
In addition to that he told us about his personal views on life and his life so far.
And the group I was travelling with was really inspiring as well. :) Plenty of different nationalities and very interesting, lovely people.

Me being a guy from Cologne, Germany, not knowing too much about the History of Scotland before, except for seeing the movie Braveheart and the first two episodes of TV-Series Outlander, I learnt a lot (the later one I did intentionally as preparation for this trip and I recommend you to do the same in order to get some running gags).
After our 5-day trip I went on my own to Edinburgh Castle and then Blair Castle. Many things I've seen there made only sense to me just because of what I've learnt during our trip as I was able to "connect the dots".

The accommodation was very homey and clean, but could have used more bathrooms or conveniently located outlets. The guide Dave was amazing! Very friendly, funny, and personable, and he did a great job tailoring our tour to our group's interests and the weather/crowd conditions. I also learned quite a bit about Scotland and it's history! I would definitely recommend this tour!

But the walks and hikes were by far the best part. The scenery was gorgeous. Each day the landscape was different so every nature stop was unique and interesting. I loved getting chunks of time to just explore beaches or climb mountains or stroll through marshy valleys. It was all so lovely!
Dave was a fantastic guide. I was seriously impressed with his ability to entertain us with stories of Scotland's history while at the same time safely maneuvering a bus through the winding roads of the highlands. (And his parallel parking skills were on point). Dave was funny and knowledgeable, and he made what would have already been a very fun trip into a truly memorable experience!
(Also a solid taste in music).

What I loved about this tour is that it felt more like a road trip. It is not formal like some other tours. Dave is a nice guy. Our tour guide Dave was hilarious and full of knowledge, he showed us places that we wanted to see especially monuments connected to Outlander and Game of Thrones as well as seeing some native Highland Coos! The bus rides were made easier with Dave’s ability to make history fun and interactive as well as having music complement the route. Definitely will recommend this tour to everyone coming to Scotland!

Our group was nearly alone for the most part there, not touristy at all (for anyone concerned: there were choices how long/difficult a path you wanted to take, so everyone could have fun). The hostels were both very nice and so was Castle Rock Hostel in Edinburgh (not included in the tour, but a perfect place to stay a few days earlier/later).
Dave was brilliant! No matter if he was talking about history, folklore, culture or current events or just made jokes, he made everything entertaining and memorable. And with a fitting soundtrack :D.
Dave was very knowledgeable and the sights we visited were beautiful.

Dave doesnt let a dull moment slip in the whole tour. Kyleakin, the night halt town is also beautiful and a great pick by these guys. Would definitely reccomend these guys for tours in Scotland.

Also the accommodation was great. It was in this cute, cosy guest house on Skye which had comfortable beds and a fire place!

I truly appreciate the efforts Dave put into ensuring that each of us had an amazing time and most importantly used our time effectively to see and experience as many places as we could. We were able to do and see so many things in only three days that I still am trying to keep track of everything! It was incredible. My absolute favourites would have to be: Hiking in the Isle of Skye, visiting the beautiful and magical fairy pools, getting up close and personal with some cute little lambs who joined us on our hike, and watching the sun set and rise in the adorable little cottage/hostel we stayed at in Kyleakin. Dave's enthusiasm, positivity and great sense of humour was really a great bonus to the trip. Each day was filled with smiles and laughter and so many great memories were made. I am so glad I booked this tour, and I can't wait for the next time I visit Scotland so that I can book another, even longer one! We stopped off at tons of gorgeous lakes, castles, mountains and went on so many wonderful hikes in that short time. It really felt like if there was something the group wanted to do, he made it happen - like stopping off at a waterfall so we could all swim after a sunny hike.

We did tons of hikes. He gave us a lot of autonomy and options at each stop that made for a real feeling of adventure. The town we stayed in was sooo quaint and the staff at the guesthouse there was very nice as well.

The schedule is somewhat tight but enough time is provided not to feel too rushed at each stop. It definitely felt as if we got to experience a wide variety of different sites.
As for our guide, Dave definitely suited my sense of humour although if you are easily offended, this may not be the tour for you. For people who can take a laugh however, Dave's somewhat colourful descriptions of events in Scottish history are very entertaining. If you are open to experiencing a more informal style of guiding, I would definitely recommend taking a tour with Dave even if you are more used to a prim and proper environment. If you have any ANZAC friends, then you will understand what I mean.

Our driver/guide Dave went above and beyond in making sure we got the most out of the trip, from pointing out some of the cool hidden places we should check out (and which tourist traps to avoid!), to regaling us with stories from Scottish history as we took in the epic scenery. Because the group is on the smaller side, the itinerary is flexible if there's something you'd really like to see, and the smaller bus means it can get to places which the big tour buses can't. If you're keen to take a trip through the Highlands but want to avoid the huge, crowded buses and prefer a more personal approach, I can't recommend MacBackpackers enough.

I was traveling alone and had been planning on making my own way to the Isle of Skye but this was a much better way to do it. We were able to fit in lots of sights without the trip feeling rushed at all, there was plenty of time to sit back and soak up the magnificent landscapes. The itinerary is quite flexible so if you have your heart set on making it to a particular castle or something Dave will try and make it happen. The guesthouse accommodation on Skye was cozy and comfortable. Just book it in, you won't regret it!

I have dreamed about coming to Scotland, and specifically the Isle of Skye for years, I accidentally stumbled across this tour, and I do not believe there could have been a better experience. We hit every site I was hoping to - Loch Ness, ancient druid ruins, some of the most important historic battle fields, three castles, the most beautiful parts of Skye, and more.
Our guide, Dave, is truly the baddest man in bus driving. He is like KISS - you want the best, you get the best. He has an in depth knowledge about all things Scotland (I ask a lot of detailed questions about history, he never skipped a beat.) and kept the laughs going the entire three days of the trip.
After this experience, I would not recommend any other tour to my friends and family. This is a small, independently owned company, and you can tell that they have a passion for all things Scotland.

It was a busy 3 days, but the schedule was flexible enough for us to spend plenty of time exploring different parts of Skye. Keep in mind that it does take a good part of the day to travel from Edinburgh - Skye, but we were able to stop for all the interesting locations along the way, including Loch Ness and Glen Coe. Also heaps of photo opportunities.
A small group (13 total) meant we were travelling in the van/minibus, which was a bonus. Also had a great time meeting other fellow solo travellers - there were quite a few if you weren't sure you'd be the only one :)
Decent accommodation for a hostel, which was reserved just for our tour's use. Breakfast included! The view from the room overlooking the harbour is one I'll definitely miss. Note that the cost of accommodation isn't included when booking the tour.
Dave was a great tour guide, and his broad knowledge of Scottish history & culture provided plenty of insight for us all - definitely made the trip memorable!

He managed to keep us to schedule despite the groups best efforts to linger at every stop but made sure we had plenty of time for the real show stoppers, he also did his best to accommodate any requests from the clever ones on the bus who had done research which meant that the rest of the group also benefited from their efforts:)
My friend and I did worry before we arrived if we would struggle to understand our guide with a Scottish accent but thankfully this was a not an issue with Dave! :) He has excellent playlists! I only wished he could have justified a few more from the darkness but he got a couple in. Stories were hilarious even if occasionally my home country was the punch line.. however it was often a case of it’s funny because its true, so there were no hard feelings! There is no one who can tell stories of old Kings and Queens quite like Dave does. He is the coolest guy ever. His knowledge of Scottish history is impressive and his jokes make it really fun to listen to him. The places and scenes he showed us were magnificent, the music in the bus was great, and the atmosphere in the group was light and friendly. One might think that being around the same people for 3 whole days is exhausting. But the many stops in Scotlands beautiful nature give plenty of opportunities to just relax and enjoy the breathtaking scenery.
It was nice to chill in the cozy couches of the hostels in the evening. Or you could go on yet another adventure to explore life and nature of the highlands.
I loved everything about this trip. I learned a lot about Scotland, met new people and saw some of the most beautiful places in the world!
I would totally go on another MacBackpackers tour.

He told us fascinating stories about Mary Queen of Scots and Jacobite risings in a very interesting way and you could really tell that he really knew the history of Scotland. I would really recommend this tour and the guide to anyone who is thinking about coming to Scotland! I will definetely try another MacBackPackers tour if I return to Scotland.

I was able to see so many beautiful places that i would have never even known about had I chosen to drive around. The bus has regular stops and was very comfortable so the long distances covered each day were very easy.
Dave was such a great guide with so much knowledge on Scottish history. I was also laughing for every speech he gave, even when he was ripping on my home country.
If you are not sure whether to take this trip i would strongly recommend you do! You will not regret it. Much better than the bigger companies that only care about themselves.

I really enjoyed this tour because it was very much geared towards our group. Would recommend to any backpackers on a budget because there were no "tourist traps" to get you to just spend more money. Accommodation was okay, nothing beyond hostel expectations. Scotland is a beauty and we embraced a little bit of liquid sunshine but Dave knew the best spots to take us. Great tour!

Truthfully, much of this great experience was due to Dave, our tour guide. He was absolutely hilarious, had an extreme in-depth knowledge of the locational history, and made the entire trip fun, social, loose, and just an all around great time. Also, the music playlist was spot on. Awesome music that often times fit directly with the stories being told.
So many tours are way too stereotypically “touristy” for me, but this one was different for all the right reasons. The small group size, the fun/joking environment, staying with the group at a hostel, and just being able to actually get out and about and experience things outdoors was worlds better than the traditional, stuffy “hop-on-hop-off” style tours.
I wouldn’t hesitate for a single second to recommend this tour to my friends and, more specifically, I would tell them that if Dave was their guide, that they would be in for an incredible, informative, and hilarious adventure.
You’re the man, Dave. Thanks for making the trip such a memorable experience.

Macbackpackers only do tours in Scotland and their local guides know the best places and the tourist traps to avoid so you get the best value for your money. Our guide was absolutely hilarious and took us on some amazing hikes whilst telling us all about the history and stories of the amazing sights of the highlands. 100% would recommend so worth the money and time.

MacBackpackers should start charging for people who are more than 5 mins late from the agreed time and with that money 50% should go to our Guide and 50% fund can be used for group party at the end of the tour.. but gives message to all to honor time.

Dave went out of the way to customize the tour to the groups individual desires, and made recommendations of great places to see. He was funny and his adaptions to stories and mix bag accent made it more enjoyable, you never knew what accent was going to come out of his mouth.

On the trip we heard the best scottish legends and history stories. To bad we couldn't stop everywhere to have a really long hike and some glasses of whisky ;)
The group was very open and everybody shared stories from home. sometimes from countries really far away.
A great experience! I will definitely do this again in a few years.

I learned so much about Scottish history and current events, I felt like I should have kept a notebook to jot stuff down! I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone looking to see some of the most beautiful sights in the country (and in my opinion - the whole world). Dave even gave us a brief tour of Edinburgh when we were driving back into the city. The MacBackpackers group is fun, safe, and knowledgeable. I stayed in the hostels in Edinburgh all five nights I was there after the tour. It really felt like a little community and I hung out with the people I met on the tour for the rest of my time in Scotland. So awesome!

I went earlier this month with a friend, and we were in a group with 20 or so other people from around the world. Pretty diverse mix of countries, ages, travel experiences, and so on. Dave was tour guide and bus driver, and he was enthusiastic and hilarious. The bus was spacious and clean; there was a lot of time spent on the bus (particularly on the first and last days of the trip), but this was a very enjoyable bus in terms of spending time on the bus. The hot pink velvet detailing didn't hurt, either. The itinerary was a lot more flexible than I anticipated, and Dave adapted his ideas based on our interests and the weather forecast. The highlands and Skye are beautiful!!! I enjoyed seeing everything, both out the windows (when on the bus) and on the ground (when we stopped). There were viewing and photo stops, as well as activity stops (walks, light hikes, cafe/grocery time, etc.). Dave also added to the experience by sharing many Scottish folk tales, lots of Scottish history, and playing traditional Scottish music on the bus. The accommodation in Kyleakin was beautiful - well-located, comfortable, and with friendly staff who helped coordinate logistics and kitchen time. Thanks, all, for an awesome first MacBackpackers tour experience!

One big + is that they don't drop you off at expensive restaurants and tourist-shops, if you want to eat at a pub or restaurant you can do that, if you want to cook noodles and live of that you could do that. The hostel-stays were well-arranged (maybe not as good as castle rock, but still very good) and driver/guide Dave did an outstanding job by telling the Scottisch history and folklore in a hilarius and interesting way. This tour is no hop off- take a picture -and hop back on tour, but instead let's you really admire your surroundings. I definetely enjoyed this tour and think it is a must-do for everyone visiting Edinburgh/Scotland.

He also gave us a lot of options and flexibility for the places we wanted to visit. This was good because it meant we could tailor the trip to what we felt like doing on that day (and the weather) instead of following a rigid schedule. I like that we were treated like adults, and not like school kids on an excursion (which has been my experience with some other tours). On our short trip we hiked, did a tour of a whisky distillery, visited a farm, a castle... and a few brave souls even bathed in Loch Ness, just to name a few things.
Also, as a solo traveller this trip was great for meeting other people and socialising. Overall, highly recommend!

He is indeed an artist: always informative, entertaining, funny :-)! He should be awarded as Scottish cultural ambassador! What I really loved about the tour was the enormous flexibility. No wish stayed unresponded.

But if this is done with MacBackpackers where Dave is your driver/guide (he calls himself as driver but guys he is more more more than that). First let me start with the trip - AWESOME places and guys frankly speaking 3 days is very short time to cover Isle of Skye but i believe MacBackpackers try to cover the best part of it.
Now something about Dave: He is an amazing person - A storyteller, good command over his language ( guys you will have real fun), great knowledge about places, good one liners and yes he has good playlist :). He will make fun around which will not let you sleep during your journey (unless you are super tired).
Summary: Good package and you will surely want to come back with either some other tour with these guys or end up having same tour (Isle of Skye).

He made it and informative and relaxed round trip and showed us some really cool things. Would highly recommend the Macbackpackers.

The hostels were very basic and with limited facilities especially for our big group. The bus was completely full and therefore cramped and very warm inside.
The itinerary was awesome!! Lot of beautiful view and very nice hikes. We had an unexpected problem with midges at the fairy pools but the rest went very smoothly!

We had the chance to see the most beautiful highlights of the Scottish highlands combined with the funny historic stories of our guide Dave. Personally I would prefer to have one day with a longer hike (and skip a castle instead) to also have a little bit of the real hiking experience. But overall the trip was really amazing!
David prepared an amazing road trip soundtrack, related to everything that we visit and keep us with a happy mood even in the raining times! So ditch your music and enjoy the music from David!

Dave is a funny character that knows his stuff in regards to Skye amd the Highlands. Colin as our driver was also very polite and happy to chat with any of us about the geology of the place!
