Highlights

  • Celebrate life in Latvia's gorgeous capital city Riga, a living museum of different architectural eras set against the beautiful backdrop of the Daugava River.
  • Get acquainted with Latvia’s history and its harsh times during the country’s occupation by the Germans and the Soviets, at the Museum of Occupation.
  • Immerse yourself in the sights and smells of Riga's colourful Central Market, one of Europe’s largest, dating back to 1201.
  • Say a prayer at the Rīga Cathedral, the largest medieval church in the Baltic region with architectural styles from the 13th to 18th centuries.
  • Savour the view from Terrace Riga which overlooks the grand boulevards of the city centre while you sip on delicious pina coladas and martinis.
  • Explore the streets of the charming old town, stumble upon Gothic churches and you’ll see why Riga was called the ‘Paris of the East'.
  • Take a romantic walk through the Esplanāde, a large park lined with magnificent trees, wooden benches, historic figurines and quaint cafés.
  • Participate in the local events at the Kalnciema Street Quarter which has open air markets and hosts concerts, movie nights and small festivals every week.

Tips

  • The common greeting is ‘ladbien’ which means 'hello'. The word for 'thank you' is ‘paldies’ in Latvian.
  • Though polite and courteous, Latvians are not quick to smile and are generally quite reserved and serious. So think twice before you indulge in small talk.
  • Titles are important. ‘Kungs’ is an honorary title to address a man and ‘Kundze’ to address a woman.
  • If you purchase a piece of Latvian artwork which is more than 50 years old, a special antique take-out permit is necessary. Your tour guide will give you more details on the process.
  • Petty theft and pickpocketing are common. Avoid unlit streets and parks at night, and be extra vigilant if walking alone.
  • If you’re at a nightclub, keep your wits about you and don’t accept drinks from strangers.
  • Beggars may haggle you for change, but avoid giving money as it sets a bad precedent.
  • Come prepared for extremely cold weather if you visit Latvia in the winter (October to March).
