8 Day Finnish Lapland Itinerary, incl. Äkäslompolo and Ylläs
Pristine cross-country skiing paradise awaits in Akaslompolo, within Pallas-Yllastunturi National Park's 7 snow-capped fells. The 300km trail network, including 40km of illuminated night routes, starts right at Yllashumina Hotel. Visits include Lake Akaslomopojarvi, traditional Finnish kotas, with Northern Lights viewing after 10pm when street lights dim.

- Day 1
Arrival in Äkäslompolo
Fly into Kittilä Airport and take the 45-minute transfer to Äkäslompolo village. Book flights arriving around 14:30 to catch the included transfers, as private transfers can be expensive. After checking into the Yllashumina Hotel, spend your evening walking around the village, surrounded by seven stunning snow-capped fells.

- Days 2-3
Introduction to Cross-Country Skiing
Visit the hotel's ski service for equipment fitting. If you're new to skiing, book morning lessons for about €65 to learn the basics. You'll find beginner-friendly trails starting right at the hotel that circle Lake Äkäslompojärvi. As one guest shared: "The illuminated trails were perfect for building confidence - even complete beginners can handle the flat lakeside routes."

- Days 4-5
Exploring Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park
Take on the park's extensive 300km trail network. Intermediate skiers should try the "warm tracks" on the upper fells, where it's often 15°C warmer than in the village. You'll need layers since skiing quickly warms you up. Take breaks at traditional kota huts for hot blueberry juice and munkki (Finnish doughnuts). The trails have good signage, but keep your phone handy with offline maps just in case.

- Day 6
Ylläs Summit Adventure
Take a break from skiing and ride Finland's highest chairlift to the top of Yllästunturi Fell at 719m. Stop at the summit restaurant for incredible views of Lapland's wilderness. In the evening, join a Northern Lights snowshoe trek (about €65). The village helps by turning off street lights at 10 PM for better aurora viewing.
- Day 7
Snow Village & Optional Activities
Check out the Snow Village by local ski bus to see amazing ice sculptures. Think about trying husky sledding or snowmobiling later in the day. Book these activities early as spots fill up quickly. End your day relaxing in the hotel's traditional Finnish sauna before dinner.
- Day 8
Departure
Head back to Kittilä Airport. The transfer leaves very early (around 4:30 AM) for 6:35 AM flights. Consider booking a later flight since winter roads can be tricky in the dark.

What people love about 10-day Lapland tours
- Grand Lapland Tour - Finland, Sweden and Norway with activities
A very nice and adventurous tour! I loved seeing the northern lights, the huskies, everything! The guides were most helpful and friendly and everyone on the tour was great. I can only recommend warm clothes and several layers of socks, but even without that the guides will keep you warm and comfortable. 10/10!
- Scandinavian Northern Lights
Excellent very well organised. Tour director Xavier was fabulous and so was the driver Damien. Very professional. Would really recommend this trip to all my friends and family.
