- Days 1-3
Lisbon Region
Start your golf adventure by flying into Lisbon Airport and heading to a resort south of the city. Book a mid-morning arrival to skip Lisbon's busy rush hour from 8-10 AM. You'll play your first two rounds at courses near Lisbon. Pack plenty of sunscreen since Portuguese courses don't offer much shade. Take a break between rounds for lunch by the beach and watch the sun set over the Atlantic. In the afternoon visit the Setúbal region for wine tasting where you can sample their famous Moscatel wines.

Lisbon to Algarve Transfer
The trip south takes about 3 hours by private transfer. Stop for lunch at an Alentejo vineyard on the way. Plan your tee times carefully since Portuguese lunches often run long. Get an early checkout from your Lisbon hotel to make the most of your first afternoon in the Algarve.

Central Algarve
Stay in Vilamoura or Albufeira to be close to several championship courses. The Algarve courses are more demanding than those in Lisbon. Watch out for ocean winds when selecting clubs for seaside holes. Book morning tee times in summer to avoid afternoon heat that can hit 95°F. On your day off take a guided tour to less-visited spots like Ferragudo's fishing village.

Return to Lisbon
Play one last round during your drive back. Book a hotel in Chiado or Principe Real. These neighborhoods put you close to the farewell dinner spot without the tourist crowds you'll find in Baixa. A recent traveler shared: "The seafood restaurant for our farewell dinner had incredible views over the Tagus River. Try the local vinho verde - it pairs perfectly with the fresh fish."

Departure
Book flights after 11 AM so you can enjoy a relaxed breakfast. The airport is 20-30 minutes from central Lisbon but give yourself extra time during peak summer season.

Arrival in Sagres

Sagres to Lagos (50km)
Start early to avoid the heat. Visit Cape St. Vincent lighthouse at Europe's southwestern tip, with its 75-meter cliffs and Atlantic views. Ride through Salema fishing village to Lagos via Ponta da Piedade. Bring extra water—you won't find many refill spots until Burgau.

Lagos to Portimao (30km)
Spend your morning at Lagos harbor before cycling east. Stop at Meia Praia beach for a swim during low tide to see local shellfish collectors. Try the seafood restaurants in Alvor for lunch. Finish at Portimao's Praia da Rocha beach.
- Day 4
Portimao to Albufeira (45km)
Begin in Ferragudo for river views. Cycle through olive and cork oak groves to Lagoa. Visit Senhora da Rocha chapel for coastal views. The route gets hillier near Albufeira—consider an e-bike if you're worried about the climbs.
- Day 5
Albufeira to Faro (50km)
Take a break at Olhos de Água's beach on this longer ride. Pass through Vilamoura marina and pine forests to reach Ria Formosa nature park. Visit Faro's Capela dos Ossos, built with over 1,200 monks' skulls.
- Day 6
Faro to Tavira (45km)
Ride through Ria Formosa's salt pans and lagoons. Stop at Olhão's morning market for pastries. Watch birds along the coastal path to Fuseta. End your day at Tavira's Roman bridge before sunset.
- Day 7
Tavira Loop to Vila Real (60km)
Cycle through pine forests to Monte Gordo and along the Spanish border at Guadiana River. Watch for sandy trails. One cyclist notes: "Spring rains turned many miles of hard-packed dirt into mud." Use paved routes after rain.

Departure from Tavira

Stunning views every day and a very engaging and dedicated tour leader made this my favourite Explore trip yet. Plenty of much desired solitude on the walks - too often I find them crowded with other groups. Grading was accurate, the walks were never near exhausting. Breakfasts at the hotel were not suitable for a day of walking, but the variety and quality of food available nearby for dinners was excellent. Not enough positive things can be said about our guide, Carol. She is new but one would never know had she not said so...and a natural for the job.
