  • Days 1-2

    New York City:

    Start in NYC and hit the Empire State Building before 9 AM to skip the crowds. A recent visitor shared: "The morning light over Manhattan from the observation deck was incredible, and we only waited 10 minutes to get up." Spend your first afternoon in Lower Manhattan and the 9/11 Memorial. Use day 2 for Midtown attractions and Central Park. Get a MetroCard for unlimited subway rides - it's much better than dealing with rush hour taxi traffic.

    
  • Days 3-4

    Philadelphia & Washington DC:

    NYC to Philly is about 2 hours by car. Give yourself 2-3 hours for the Independence Hall area before driving to DC (2.5 hours more). The National Mall museums in DC are free but fill up quickly. Get there at 10 AM when they open. Book your Capitol tour well ahead of time. Take the monuments tour at night for better photos and smaller crowds.

    Niagara Falls:

    The 7-hour drive from DC is long but scenic. Book a hotel on the Canadian side for better views. Take the Maid of the Mist boat ride in the morning when lines are shorter. Bring a waterproof jacket - you'll need it! Take time to drive the Niagara Parkway and check out the vineyards.

    
  • Days 7-8

    Chicago:

    Stop at the Henry Ford Museum near Detroit on your way to Chicago (4 hours more). Stay in River North to be close to Michigan Avenue shopping and Navy Pier. Book your Lake Michigan architecture cruise early if you're visiting in summer.

    
  • Days 9-11

    Minneapolis to South Dakota:

    Break up the long western drive with a stop in Madison WI. The Mall of America is worth seeing before you enter South Dakota's landscape. Book your Badlands hotel early during peak season. A visitor told us: "The Badlands' striped rock formations at sunset were otherworldly—arrive by 7 PM for the best light."

  • Days 12-16

    Mount Rushmore to Yellowstone:

    Take full days to see Mount Rushmore and Yellowstone's main attractions. West Yellowstone is the best place to stay for park access. Plan around Old Faithful's eruptions every 90 minutes. Look for wildlife at dawn and dusk. Stop in Jackson for amazing Grand Teton views.

  • Days 17-20

    Utah Parks to Las Vegas:

    Take your time in Utah's national parks. See Bryce Canyon's rock formations at sunrise for the best photos. Start Zion hikes early before the midday heat. Visit the Grand Canyon's North Rim to avoid crowds, then head to Las Vegas for a complete change of pace.

  • Days 21-24

    Los Angeles:

    Drive across the Mojave Desert in the morning when it's cooler. Pick a hotel in Santa Monica or West Hollywood where you can walk to attractions. Book the Warner Bros. Studio Tour ahead - it sells out fast. Plan extra time to deal with LA traffic between sites.

  • Days 1-2

    Florida

    Texas Triangle & Route 66

    Check out the Fort Worth stockyards early to beat the heat. On your way to Amarillo, stop at Cadillac Ranch and bring spray paint if you want to leave your mark. Pack some warm clothes too - Texas winters can catch you off guard.

    Southwest

    Get up early in Albuquerque if you want to catch a hot air balloon ride. When you get to Denver, take it slow - the altitude is no joke at 5,280 feet. Drink lots of water and visit the Botanic Gardens in the morning light.

    Utah's National Parks

    Make Moab your home base for Arches and Canyonlands. A recent visitor shared: "The 3-mile Devils Garden trail in Arches gets intense midday - start by 7am and bring twice as much water as you think you need." Give yourself full days to explore Bryce Canyon and Zion.

    Grand Canyon to California

    Get to Mather Point 30 minutes before sunrise for the best Grand Canyon views. It's about 4.5 hours to Vegas from there. Your final stretch to LA through the Mojave Desert needs some planning - try to avoid arriving between 3-7pm when traffic is worst.
