The Balkans are amazing and I recommend that you visit this region that is almost unspoiled by Western tourism before more of it becomes like tourist-infested Dubrovnik and mega cruise port Kotor. Hi…The Balkans are amazing and I recommend that you visit this region that is almost unspoiled by Western tourism before more of it becomes like tourist-infested Dubrovnik and mega cruise port Kotor. Highlights on this trip were Lake Ohrrid, Tirana and Pritzen. I fell in love with Lake Ohhrid and its many churches (most with original frescoes as early as 12th century) on the tour led by a local guide at sunset; and Tirana and its energy and history, again with a local guide. I wish we had more time in Pritzen, there was just so much to uncover there.
All in all, it’s a beautiful region and I found the locals unexpectedly friendly, welcoming and curious – that is, when we were milling about with locals and not at the more upscale pricey restaurants taken to by our guide (kickback?). Beware as well that the hotels on this itinerary are hardly “comfort” hotels; I think only one of them had an in-room safe, and two were small and bare bones rooms with wires hanging and burned out lightbulbs. As there was significant down time in the evenings, I recommend that solos book the insanely overpriced single supplement (or go with another company) no matter what Intrepid tells you about group cohesiveness; they just want to sell trips. True to form Intrepid brands itself as a low-impact, close to the ground company, but sometimes I feel it is just an excuse to cut costs. With the trip price topping over $200/day, I did not expect to have to shell out more for local guides, admissions to key sights on-route and a number of on-route group meals that were not included.
For what its worth, as Intrepid rotates the guides and ours had never led this tour before (although he was expert in the region), I found ours to be aloof and unresponsive at times, and did not always communicate essential logistics clearly and timely. He did maintain a respectable professional profile and had a depth of historical knowledge to share, and I was pleased to see him take his job seriously (not a party animal). It is unfortunate that because of the buddy-friend attitude that Intrepid Guides are known for and what they tell passengers about positive feedback being important for their young careers, the guides, the company and this website probably doesn’t get enough constructive and critical feedback that would help them grow and better serve their passengers. Read every review with a grain of salt, nothing is ever five stars. You just have to live and learn.

I did Busabout's Croatia One Way Sail with him from Split to Dubrovnik. I thought we were all so lucky to have a Croatian tour guide to show us through the Dalmatian coast but Ivan was so much more than that. He catered to everyone's needs and dos his absolute damndest to make everyone happy and ensure we were all having a great time. He helped us in the wee hours of the morning when we were lost and stumbling home. He joined in our fun and had a good time with us as well as keeping us all safe and made sure we were looked after. Ivan was very knowledgable and showed us the best time everywhere we stopped, taught us about the history of Croatia and how everything came to be the way it is today. We saw some amazing places and even the days/nights we spent on the boat Ivan still ensured we had heaps of fun. Croatia sail was most certainly a major highlight of my 4 month busabout adventure. Guides like Ivan make your trip one to remember.

I just wish the Busabout would keep the group size as promised to 25 Paxs max when I first booked the trip. However, I must commend that we have the best guide Ivan. He is very passionate about his job and does his best to make sure everyone is having a good time. The tour takes you on a very informative journey through the confusing war torn past of Bosnia & Herzegovina and Serbia with a cheeky stop off at Sunny Beach before the great Istanbul. The optional activities are definitely worth doing and still leave you with a fair amount of free time to do your own thing. Accommodation is generally good and you stay in some quite nice hotels which was a surprise! Sarajevo and Istanbul were probably my favourites. I loved learning about Sarajevo's recent history and Istanbul is such a beautiful place (but the most expensive out of the different places). Well done Ivan for your great guiding skills!

He was always happy to help with anything you needed or you were curious about.
His passion for history is apparent throughout the trip. His sense of humor helped bring the tour group together and bound over a good laugh.

The accommodation was very good in Sarajevo, Belgrade, Istanbul and Sofia except for Sunny Beach the accommodation when upon arrival didn't exceed to my expectations as there was glass all over the floor, the pull out bed was broken when I slept on it it just wasn't great

You get to see so much more of the countries on the trip than you would travelling alone and you don't have to worry about what you're going to do and where you're going to go at every stop. Plus you get time to explore on your own! And of course the tour wouldn't have been nearly as amazing without our fantastic tour guide Ivan! He was incredibly knowledgeable about the history and culture of each and every country. It was so great to learn about each place we went before we even got there - it gives more meaning to the experience. Travelling the Balkans with Busabout and Ivan is the absolute best way to do it!

The hotel accommodations were excellent. It was nice to see so much of the surrounding area and not have to change locations. Please note that the hikes are quite difficult. There are a lot of elevation changes and climbing up, over, and around rocks. Hiking boots are a must! Highly recommend this trip!

3 changes in accommodation; Mumbai - Gordon House Hotel is excellent, well priced and only 1 street back from Gateway to India but the company changed to Fariyas Hotel, Mumbai which was been renovated as well as painted so very noisy, couldn't use the pool and scaffolding all around. Definitely not ideal. Our second night in Delhi was also cancelled at Jaypee Siddharth Hotel though privately booked and paid for months before the tour so had to find alternative accommodation while on the tour and they told the travel agents they were "closed for renovations" however the tour was booked and stayed there and no renovations were occuring.
Hadoti Palace Hotel in Bundi looked nice and rooms were big but not clean especially the toilet and shower. Otherwise all hotels were very nice and rated accurately; cleaning the showers/washrooms would have helped with the mouldy smell but that is somewhat consistent in most countries. November is the start of wedding season in India which are very loud and noisy and have no time restrictions so be prepared for that if going at this time of year. Tour involves quite a number of days travelling in a bus/coach for 4 - 6 hours with a stop every 2 - 3 hours. Rest stops are OK at best with only snack food to purchase. Adjusting the departure time would have helped with timeframes as quite a few days we were getting lunch around 2 - 3 pm when hotel kitchens were closed. Definitely not enough free time for shopping on your own with organized evenings most nights or in a venue on the outside of towns. Toured the markets but they were only a walk through with the group and no time to stop and shop. Restaurants and food was amazing and no one was unwell on the trip. 2 days in Ranthambhore Park was too long and could have done in 1.5 days with more time in Agra. Overall a very good trip for myself and my father (aged 79).
Excellent fast-paced trip with an excellent guide. India is a constant assault on all your senses with wonderful people, colours, noise and smells.
