4 Days in Transylvania, incl. Bucharest and Brasov
Romania's castle heritage unfolds over 4 days, featuring 7 medieval fortresses including iconic Bran Castle and Gothic Corvin Castle. The UNESCO sites of Sighisoara citadel and Biertan's fortified church await exploration. Central hotels in Brasov and Sibiu serve as bases for guided tours through Council Square and the Bridge of Lies.

- Day 1
Bucharest to Brasov via Royal Castles
Leave Bucharest early morning to kick off your Transylvania adventure. Important note: Peles Castle closes on Mondays and some Tuesdays, so plan your visit carefully. "Peles is perhaps the grandest castle in Romania—make sure you can visit when the full interior is open, not just the ground floor," advises a recent visitor. Take the 2.5-hour drive north to Sinaia to see Peles Castle, then visit the famous Bran Castle. Yes, it's touristy, but the dramatic setting makes it worth your time. Stop at Rasnov Fortress in the afternoon before heading to Brasov. Spend your evening walking around Council Square and visiting the Black Church. Get a hotel in the historic center so you can easily explore at night.

- Day 2
Rural Transylvania
Travel through traditional Saxon villages to Rupea fortress. The small village of Viscri will give you a real look at traditional Romanian life. One visitor puts it well: "Viscri was a delight, with its traditional houses and amazing local cuisine." Your day ends in the medieval UNESCO site of Sighisoara citadel. Pack good walking shoes—those cobblestone streets are pretty steep.

- Day 3
Fortified Churches and Castles
Get an early start to see Biertan's fortified church with its triple defensive walls. Visit Alba Iulia's star-shaped fortress, then move on to Corvin Castle. "Corvin Castle amazes with its Gothic architecture and dragon-carved towers—it feels straight out of a fantasy novel," according to a recent visitor. End your day in Sibiu, where you can walk across the famous Bridge of Lies between the upper and lower towns.

- Day 4
Sibiu to Bucharest
Take the morning to explore Sibiu's medieval squares. If you're traveling between July and November, drive the scenic Transfagarasan highway to Curtea de Arges. A visitor notes: "Driving the Transfagarasan had absolutely breathtaking scenery, and we even spotted brown bears in the forested areas." You'll get back to Bucharest by evening.
