7 Days in Spain & Portugal, incl. Madrid and Porto
A grand 7-day route through Portugal and Spain takes you from Madrid to Lisbon's Alfama Quarter. Sample Porto's renowned wines and visit Coimbra's university while resting at 4-star accommodations including Yotel Porto and Lutecia Lisbon.

- Day 1
Madrid to Vigo
Leave Madrid's VPT Office on Ferraz Street at 7:45 AM. The 2.5-hour drive to Salamanca fits perfectly with a lunch stop at Plaza Mayor. You'll see the sandstone buildings at their best during midday sun. One traveler noted, "We saw many things in a short amount of time, but it was not a fast pace." The journey continues to Vigo (4.5 hours) where you'll get your first taste of Galician food. A tip for sensitive travelers: bring motion sickness medicine for the mountain roads.

- Day 2
Portuguese Coast
Enter Portugal through Viana do Castelo. Visit the Basilica Santa Luzia for amazing Atlantic views. The old town has steep cobblestone streets so good walking shoes are essential. Drive an hour to Braga to visit the baroque Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary. End your day in Porto. Most visitors prefer staying in the Ribeira district near restaurants and wine cellars.

- Day 3
Porto Exploration
Start at the Stock Exchange Palace right when it opens at 9 AM to avoid crowds. Save your afternoon for Port wine tasting but keep your evening plans light. One visitor shared: "Very interesting itinerary with free time to explore optional activities." End your day with a walk on the Dom Luís I Bridge at sunset.

- Day 4
Coimbra's Academic Heritage
- Day 5
Fátima to Lisbon
- Day 6
Lisbon Discoveries
- Day 7
Return to Madrid
Start early for the long drive (613km) back to Madrid. Stop in Cáceres for lunch and try the local Torta del Casar cheese in the medieval quarter. You should reach Madrid by early evening depending on traffic. Take note of one traveler's advice: "Several of the seatbelts were temperamental" so choose your seat carefully at the start.

Castilla & Portugal Explorer - 7 days
Starting in Madrid and finishing at Merida's UNESCO Roman ruins, this week-long journey covers 11 Portuguese and Spanish cities. Salamanca's honey-colored Plaza Mayor and Porto's old wine cellars are standouts, along with the baroque St. Clara Church. Lisbon brings the Tower of Belem, Jeronimos Monastery, and Monument to the Discoveries into view.

Overall great tour of southern Spain. Hotels were nice and clean. Some with breakfast or dinner buffets. The only big negative was that the bus had a very strong awful soap smell the entire trip and was not pleasant. Our main guide was very nice but we did not have a way to contact her if needed. The itinerary was great and we were able to tour a lot of the major sites.
