8 Day Netherlands Cycling Itinerary, incl. Amsterdam and Rotterdam
A circular route winds through 11 Dutch cities over eight days. Starting at Amsterdam's UNESCO canals, moving through Haarlem's historic center, visiting Kinderdijk's windmills, and Utrecht's medieval streets. Four 4-star hotels host guests with daily breakfast.
- Day 1
Amsterdam
Start exploring Amsterdam's UNESCO canal ring area. Walk along Brouwersgracht canal for a quieter, more authentic experience compared to the main tourist spots. Book your Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House tickets online at least 2 days before to avoid long waits.
- Day 2
Amsterdam to Zandvoort (30 miles/48 km)
Start your ride early through Kennemerland. The route through the polders is flat but wind can slow you down, so budget extra time. Stop in Haarlem for lunch to see its historic center and hidden courtyards (hofjes). A recent visitor shared: "The windmills along the Spaarne River in Haarlem were a highlight – much less crowded than the tourist spots."

Zandvoort to The Hague (28 miles/45 km)
Take the North Sea coastal route on dedicated bike paths. If you're visiting during tulip season (April-May), consider a quick 5-mile trip to Keukenhof Gardens before the morning crowds. Download your route beforehand since coastal cell service isn't reliable.
- Day 4
The Hague to Rotterdam (15 miles/24 km)
This shorter ride gives you time to explore Delft's historic center. The path to Rotterdam is well-marked but watch for busy road crossings. Look for cyclist traffic lights and follow what locals do. Rotterdam's modern skyline is a nice change from traditional Dutch architecture.

Rotterdam to Gouda (25 miles/40 km)
Visit Kinderdijk's windmills early before tourist groups arrive at 10am. You'll ride along rivers and canals through classic Dutch landscapes. If possible, plan to be in Gouda on Thursday morning (April-August) for the traditional cheese market. A cyclist tip: "The syrup waffles from the street vendor near Gouda's main square were the perfect cycling snack – get them fresh and warm."
- Day 6
Gouda to Utrecht (32 miles/52 km)
The longest day takes you through the Green Heart region with its polders and grazing cows. Bring rain gear since there's little shelter. In Utrecht, park your bike near the Dom Tower but walk the crowded historic center.
- Day 7
Utrecht to Amsterdam (28 miles/45 km)
Ride north along the Vecht River past beautiful estates and gardens. Bring coins for several ferry crossings. Take a break in Weesp before the busy final stretch into Amsterdam.
- Day 8
Amsterdam
Spend your last morning in Amsterdam. Plan 30 minutes to return your bike near Centraal Station before departure.

- Bruges to Amsterdam, Bike & Barge in Belgium and Holland
The crew of the boat were great, the cabins small but adequate. Our tour guide took us through beautiful parts of Belgium and the Netherlands but I was extremely disappointed that one day the guide hyped up the museum in Antwerp but stalled so much on the bike ride we didn’t have time to see the museum. Overall a great experience.
