Ultimate Vietnam Adventure - South to North
I absolutely fell in love with Vietnam and met some amazing people, but this tour personally wasn't my travel style. I started off on a bad foot as I'd been mis-sold the tour by STA travel who sold it…I absolutely fell in love with Vietnam and met some amazing people, but this tour personally wasn't my travel style. I started off on a bad foot as I'd been mis-sold the tour by STA travel who sold it to me as an 18-29 party tour. In Northern Vietnam, there were only 4 other paying travellers (one of which has ended up being a great friend) but the others were slightly older more 30s-40s. I was surprised at the small group number as I went in British summer so I assumed it would be peak season for young European/Northern American backpackers. When we arrived in Hoi An, 7 others joined the trip so it was a bit more entertaining. Bo, Demi and Sarah were great and made sure everyone had fun and really helped me out with my future travels on multiple occasions.
Hoi An, Phong Nha, Dalat and HCMC were my personal favourite places.
Although many chose this tour for the Golden hand bridge (which is located in a theme park and very over touristy), my personal highlight was of my whole time in Vietnam was Linh Phoc pagoda outside Dalat - I don't believe I would've discovered the temple if it wasn't for this tour.
The caves in Phong Nha is expensive but a must-do (so much fun!!) and the boat trip in Nha Trang is one of the best days if you have a good group. It was nice the have a chilled/boozy day on the boat as the fast-pace of the tour can take it out of you.
Expect to spend a long time travelling on this tour - Vietnam is a big country, the max. amount of time you get in each location is a day and a half. This was fine for some places, but in others, I wish I had longer as the travel days can be quite draining. Expect to do a 6+ hour travel day every couple of days (the longest was 13 hours).
Like any tour, expect to pay a premium on taxis and extra day excursions - if you want to do it on the cheap then you're more than free too, but I personally felt pressured as everyone else in the group chose to do all of the activities. I chose to dip in and out as I'd have to do it on my own because there isn't an opportunity to meet travellers outside your group as you stay in hotels. STA also had an outdated itinerary which stated the vast majority of the activities were included so I didn't budget an extra £150-£200 to do all of them at premium prices.
This is just my experience with this tour, and a lot of the issues I faced were not Busabouts fault. With any tour expect to pay a premium, have a short amount of time in each place and be conscious that you are not guaranteed to meet that people that are your cup of tea.
Overall I had a positive experience with Busabout - but, due to STA, it wasn't the experience I expected.

Much of our itinerary was changed due to the weather, and whilst I understand that you have no control over this, the replacement itinerary was far below both the monetary and experience value of the original. I am also very angry that Angkor Wat of all excursion was not included on this tour and that the entire tour has been advertised as if it is. I feel deceived by this company and cannot see where all the money we paid for this tour has gone. You desperately need to listen to the recommendations of your brilliant guides and change how you run this tour.

Overall it was exceptionally disappointing. The company failed to make it's inclusions and exclusion clear to the consumer. Busabout has misleading advertising and operational practices. Overall I am very unhappy with everything except the majority of the accommodation, the driver and Bo. Very disappointing and would not recommend.

Things I would change is there is lots of hidden costs that isn’t advertised when you book the tour. The hotels were all lovely accept from the first one in Phnom Penh was horrible! I don’t expect high standards but just to be clean and this hotel was not.
Our tour itinerary changed because there was bad flooding in Cambodia at the time but Bo did everything he could to make the stuff we did still great even though it wasn’t on the original plan. The mountains in Battambang were amazing and I think this should be added to the original itinerary.
The excursions we missed out on but had already paid for were not refunded to us and the extra things we did to pass the time we then had to pay for which I thought was outrageous. I cannot see where our £500 each went in this tour and had to pay an extra $84 each for things that we thought were included and the changes of plan. Terrible value for money.
The things good about this tour was most of the hotels, mountains and cycling in Battambang and Bo!

I had thought some were included however such as elephant water fall and the caving. My favourite days of activities were definitely the caving adventure and Mr Rot's secret tour. I would definitely recommend this tour company to my friends and family.

He never failed to answer any questions that we had, or provide other optional activities for those unable to participate in whatever was happening that day. During the tour, I fell ill and Bo promptly found the safest and closest English speaking Dr available and ensured that I was well taken care of. He is fun, professional and knowledgeable which is exactly what you want in this type of tour.
The itinerary was not disappointing, however many of those on the tour felt ripped off by the company. Too many of the additional or "optional" experiences were advertised as a part of the tour, giving the misconception that these activities were included in the original price. Personally, I paid an additional $220 (on top of the original $3,400) to partake in 3 of the "optional" activities, as I had signed onto the tour believing these were included due to images of these locations being broadcast across the tour advertising. Being a student on a budget, I opted for three only as I could not afford to do all of these additional activities, which would have cost approximately $350 additional dollars.
The included meals were not bad, however in future it would be great if the included meals either a) catered for a vegan/vegetarian diet or b) if vegan/vegetarian people were given warning that all included meals would be relatively bland and lack any forms of protein to make them filling. It was disappointing to see that I had paid an equivalent amount of money as my non-vegan counter-parts and whilst they were being provided with a great selection of food, I was having to continually ask to be even given soy or tomato sauce in order to add any flavour to my meal. In the worst instance, one of the meals I was provided as an "inclusion" consisted of steamed rice and a side of warmed salted peanuts from a packet.
Buying food for the non-included meals each day of the tour cost approximately $250 for me across the 15 days. This is not unreasonable, however I am vegan, so this price is for very basic meals. I.e. this price does not reflect what the average person is paying for regular dishes that include meat or dairy, or including luxuries or alternative beverages such as alcoholic drinks, smoothies etc.
The transport was good at times, but this was not the majority. The longest trip of the tour, some 11 hours, was spent in a small over cramped bus, that was in need of serious maintanence. The seat belts had all been dismantled or forced beneath the seating, which would have been find except the Busabout policy required passengers to wear the seat belts. Hence some people ended up with no belts, others with some but fault seating/ clasps. The seat that I was initially sat on was not actually secured to the bus infrastructure, and so any bumps encountered on the drive (of which there were many) would see the the seat actually become physically dislodged from its frame and it would have to be reattached by hand. The higher quality buses were used for the shortest trips, which was frustrating. I recognise that the company hires the buses from a local provider, however the company is called BUS-about. The least they can do is call ahead and ensure that the buses they hire are of a good quality.
The over night train was infested with cockroaches and other insects. The novelty of that experience wore off approximately 1 hour in. It was not horrific, but it was certainly uncomfortable.
In future, I think the tour would be better appreciated if it were made clearer that many of the trip highlights will come at additional cost. As Busabout targets the student market heavily in Australia, it would also be handy to know that with all of the activities included, the trip will cost an additional $600 at a minimum. That does not include any luxuries, any souveniers, or even standard meals or drinks other than water. That type of information is handy for students to know.
Overall, a fun trip, just sadly over-shadowed by the additional expenses and the fact that I was charged full price for the included meals but that money was not used to provide nice food for myself.

I would recommend adding all the optional activities as these held some real highlights for me. The main demographic of the group was young solo travellers, which seems like the most appropriate fit for this tour, but the whole group got on really well. Would definitely recommend this tour and Bo as a 5 star tour guide.

The tour itself was great, i think it would be better to stay in Koh Rong for 2 nights, rather than Sihanoukville, but the overall tour was definitely worth the money :) it might also be better if the tour started in Koh Rong, then went to Kampot and Phnom penh, as it would avoid the long drive from Sihanoukville to Battambang. However I would still recommend this tour for anyone wanting the explore around Cambodia!

The itinerary can seem rushed at times, but allowing for more spare time would probably lead to price hikes for more accommodation which would push these tours beyond the means of the frugal traveller (like myself). The places we went to have the right mix of comfort and history which is what a holiday should be about. Some of that history can be quite uncomfortable, but this was never meant to be a trip to Disneyland.
The accommodation was always comfortable and in close proximity to entertainment districts and points of interest. Having breakfast provided as always a winner.
Bo was a terrific tour manager. Having a person with local knowledge who speaks the language made it so easy to get us from A to B whenever transport was required, and for getting happy hour to go on forever. His patience knows no bounds, and his knowledge of local history and story-telling ability was a pleasant bonus, even if he needs help with puns ( aMAZEing, Bo. And EGGsellent ). And what a dancer! You should be proud to have him on your team.

Bo was absolutely fantastic, from the moment we arrived on the tour he was incredibly informative and engaging and given my initial nerves about the tour his knowledge and guidance put me at ease straight away. Bo also has a fantastic sense of humour which helped the group to click really quickly and made sure we had plenty of fun along the way.
Bo had a great breadth of knowledge when it came to the history of Cambodia which was really interesting. He also shared personal stories that helped give context to what life is like in Cambodia often sharing facts that you’d never be able to read about in guidebooks or online.
Overall it was a fantastic tour and certainly one I’ll never forget, I had so much fun, made friends for life and got to see a country I’ve been wanting to see for years. The experience was unforgettable and that was all due to Bo!

There was a incident where a few of us had a horrible room with bed bugs but Bo got us all a new hotel to stay at! I really enjoyed going to Bo kick boxing gym and training with the locals definitely add that as an option for future tours! Can't thank Bo enough for all the knowledge and experience he has and also how much fun he was, always laughing, energetic, happy and most of all a friend! Will deffs return back to Cambodia one day!

We were constantly taken to restaurants where the tour guide was the first to receive him meal & drink (I wonder why......?) and at least 1 person was left with food poisoning each day.
Tour guide was rude, unhelpful & inappropriate. He spoke about his sexual experiences, religion and spoke aggressively each time someone expressed their frustration.
Some of the activities were poorly organised & boring. Definitely not worth the money.
Post tour I was promised a refund for some activities - 3 months later and the refund still hasn't been finalised properly. The customer service rep would take up to a month to respond to my emails. I gave up.
Will not be booking with Busabout again, nor would I recommend to anyone. Lucky Vietnam was beautiful that it made up for the tour.

Our tour guide was very friendly, helpful and he explained us a lot of things about the local costumes and culture. He has taken us to very interesting places and good restaurants and give us very helpful suggestions so the whole tour was very comfortable. The only drawback is that we spent a lot of time travelling, I would have maybe preferred to skip some things (like golden hands Bridge which was good just for photos) and can look at things with more calm, maybe exploring more the natural places than cities.

For me, this made the tour far more enjoyable as I didn't have to worry about what to do or fill my spare time. Which is exactly what I was looking for.
The only improvement I would recommend is the overnight train. Ideally if you were able to get a better standard if train, then I know I would happily have paid more. Or if you are able to book cabins for only those on the Busabout tour, so we were not with other members of the public and the cabins of all in the Busabout tour be as close as possible to each other.
Apart from that, brilliant tour!

I can’t say enough good about Cambodia and it’s people, beautiful country filled with lovely people!
The only downside of the trip at no fault of Busabout or Bo, was Sihanoukville!
It’s such a shame to see what’s happening there with the Chinese taking over, I was really looking forward to it but was so dissapointed once we got there...
Sunset cruise in Kampot and the bike ride in Battambang we’re so much fun!
Culturally, Angkor Wat was unbelievable and to see the unfortunate history in the S-21 prison and the killing fields was confronting but has to be done!
Overall; great tour made even better with with a great tour guide!!!
Bo is our man and to be honest saying goodbye to him at the end was a bit emotional for everybody!

Bo was our guide & he was amazing. He was so helpful and understanding and his local knowledge of every province we passed through made our road trips really interesting. Bo had a great sense of humor and always had us in fits of laughter. We were a small group of 9 and all bonded from the first night together. Every destination we visited was so different that I find it hard to pick my favorite moment. Sihanoukville was a bit disappointing but Bo took us to some untouched locations that we had all to ourselves & created our own fun. After 9 days I was not ready to come home. Thanks Bo for making our adventure magical.

The itinerary was amazing, but I think it was Bo that really made the trip incredible!

Everyday was an adventure & we all learnt so much about this beautiful Country along the way. The accommodation & tour stops were all great, although I would not return to Sihanoukville, I think it should be removed from the tour and a few extra days in Siem Reap would be great. I could not recommend this tour enough and you must request Bo as your guide, he absolutely made our trip. Thanks Bo Bo, I can’t wait to bring my family on the next trip.

Bo was extremely flexible and accommodating to all requests made by us. Bo had a very rich knowledge of the history, culture and traditions of Cambodia. The most memorable part of our tour was the fact that Bo became part of the group very quickly, he became a friend and someone we trusted. Overall, the itinerary and transportation were great. Most of the accomodation was comfortable and safe and the meals were great. I would highly reccommend this tour to anyone looking for a trip which culminates relaxation, history and cultural immersion.

He went over and beyond to make sure we were looked after. The only part of the itinerary that was not great was our hotel in Sihanoukville - it was dirty, doors didnt lock and was fairly seedy.
Apart from that, we cant rate our trip highly enough and would give our guide 20 stars out of 10 if we could!

The entire group felt privileged to have a local tour guide who could give us firsthand insights in to the culture and people of the places we visited.
Second, the bus and the hotels were excellent. It was a bit of a miss on the overnight train because we were put in random 6 person bunks, but that's life on the road, and everyone made do :)
I think the itinerary could have been a little more saturated. Occasionally we had a few days off in a row, and while we needed the rest on some of those days (that being said we were told some places to visit) it would have been nice to have fully planned group activities on some of the "off days".
We also lucked out because our tour was an eclectic mix of people from all over the world. I travelled with Busabout last year through Europe, and I would say one of the perks of the first leg of my tour with Busabout Asia, was that the people on the bus were from all over the world, and all walks of life. People found their small groups within the big group, but the big group was always happy to be together and even kept each other in the loop during the tour in a Facebook chat thread. We truly enjoyed the company, and everyone was sad to part ways. I would say a strong marketing message for Asia, is the people from all over the world who come together on this exciting journey.
I didn't go, but I heard tour to the small village in Dalat was slightly controversial in terms of the community they visited not really being open to them being there, and so there was a sense of discomfort that the group was there, but other than that optional activity, every other one was great.
For sure, our guide Bo, was always there to answer questions, recommend places to go and see and do and eat and drink, and was an integral part of the success of the tour.
Vietnam was excellent, and can't wait for Cambodia!

A few things could be improved: the hotel in Ho Chi Minh was quite far out so we had to get taxis all the time and not all breakfasts were included. Overall though, would definitely recommend to a friend!

I did the first ever Vietnam explorer tour and absolutely loved it!!!! I saw everything I wanted and more, things I wouldn't have even heard about without this tour. All the accommodation we stayed in…I did the first ever Vietnam explorer tour and absolutely loved it!!!! I saw everything I wanted and more, things I wouldn't have even heard about without this tour. All the accommodation we stayed in was lovely, particularly the ninvhana hostel (I could've done a couple of nights there) and was a particular luxury getting all inclusive at this hostel as part of the tour. I definitely felt this tour was well worth the money, including that, all the activities and even 2 nights at castaways. The one and only thing I would change is perhaps making the tour a bit longer, maybe like 21 days instead, just as there is so much travelling, and usually only one or two nights at each place, it made all the travelling extra knackering. But apart from that, it was such a wonderful experience. And especially having Sammy and Bo as our tour guides just made this experience extra special for me. Their enthusiasm and involvement with everyone on the tour made us all feel like we were a family by the end of it. I wouldn't just label them as my tour guides, but as friends I will definitely want to see again.

Really felt as if I explored the south to the north of Vietnam- from the rural countrysides cruising over the hai van pass to the beautiful party island deep within Halong Bay- it was incredible. Only recommendation I would give would be to make the tour longer!
Sammy was just amazing- really made the tour. She made us all feel part of a family and was always up for having fun with us- honestly will miss you so so much. Bo you were awesome too- what a character! Always there to provide the humour and give knowledge on what it was like to actually live in Asia for his whole life. Both bloody brilliant- love you guys. Lastly, a big shout out to Matty Cave- awesome videographer and an awesome guy-such a fun addition to the trip!!
