Overall, our experience was below average and dangerous, relative to other tours that we have taken in the past. Some specific feedback in provided below:
- Our accommodations across the board were less than desirable. The hotels selected for Tangier, Chefchaouen, and Fez were very old and Western in their style, while we had expected and preferred something more representative of the Moroccan culture and architecture. The hotel in Fez, in particular (Hotel Atlas Volubilis) was far of the Fez medina, on a street filled with Western restaurants, and was visibly dirty (particularly the floors and bathroom had ants and bugs, and bedding had human hair and dirt). After seeing this, we worked with All Morocco Travel to switch from Hotel Atlas Volubilis to a Riad in the medina. We then researched the planned accommodations in Marrakesh, saw the poor online reviews for this location, and decided to book our own Riad because All Morocco Travel said that the planned accommodations were non-refundable.
- Our driver, Farid, was uninspired throughout the trip. He did drive us to our locations and did help ensure that our hotel check-ins went smoothly for Tangier, Chefchaouen, and Fez. However, he provided little insightful narration during our many hours in the van, pointing out items here and there but not adding much to describe the culture and surroundings as other tour drivers have done in the past for us. He also strongly advocated to us that we take the highway route from Fez to Marrkesh (via Rabat and Casablanca) rather than the described tour route, stating that route was longer and not worth driving through. However, the “longer” route included in the advertised brochure would have enabled us to see the berber villages. Not fully realizing the ramifications of this decision, we missed out on seeing these places to benefit Farid in arriving in Marrakesh a few hours early.
- Upon arrival in Marrakesh, Farid was supposed to coordinate our arrival with the Riad so that we would be met with a porter sent by the hotel to carry our bags through the medina streets that are inaccessible by car (as was coordinated in Fez). Farid spoke with the staff at the riad on the phone as we were arriving in Marrakesh, but wound up getting the directions wrong (I saw that he had been following Google directions rather than listening to the riad staff member). Farid drove into the Medina, became visibly frustrated, pulled over, hopped out of the van and called over a man on the street and asked him if he could take us to our riad. Farid unloaded our bags from the van and pushed us off to the man he was speaking with on the street. I asked Farid what was happening and he told me to not worry and this man would take us to our riad. I was confused and stated I was uneasy with this plan and Farid told me to not worry and to just go. I then asked how much it would cost since we didn’t have much cash on us, to which Farid responded to not worry about it and let the riad staff take care of it. We reluctantly walked with this man for a few minutes when 5 men from the street quickly gathered around us and began to yell at the man that had our luggage. A few of these men were trying to take our luggage away form the man as they were yelling at each other. I had to yell at the men and cried for them to stop trying to take our belongings. This altercation grew and more men followed us for the entire 10 minute walk to our riad. I wound up having to use my body to shield the men from taking our luggage. Once we arrived to the riad there were nearly 7 men yelling in Arabic and the riad staff ran to our help and took care of the situation. As you can imagine, this was a very stressful and dangerous situation for us to be in. Farid put us and our safety in danger. All of this could have been avoided if Farid coordinated with the riad so that they sent a porter to the agreed to meeting location. Again, I can not stress how much danger we were put in because of Farids actions and unprofessionalism. This situation was completely unacceptable.
- On our last day in Marrakesh, Farid took us on a "tour" of the Ouira Valley, which involved a 90 minute drive to a small tourist village. Farid drove into a parking lot and told us to get off of the van. Farid told us he would be having tea at a restaurant and for us to explore the area. However, we didn’t understand or know where we were or what there was to do in the area we were in. After being harassed by people for money and to take us to waterfalls we wandered around the village for 20 or 30 minutes while Farid sat down to have tea at a restaurant close to the parked van. When we returned, Farid was nowhere to be found. We waited almost 30 minutes in the parking lot for him, and then finally paid a man to call Farid for us to let him know we were ready to go. Meanwhile, Farid had met with a friend and moved to an inside restaurant to sit with his friend. I am not sure how he thought we would find him. After we called, he came outside with his friend, informed us that he would be returning to his home in Casablanca that afternoon, and that his friend (unaffiliated with All Morocco Travel, as far as we could tell) would provide our airport transfer the next morning. After reaching this decision to leave for home a day early, Farid's energy level and driving speed peaked to levels previously not seen.
- Finally, on our day of departure, 7/2/2019, we were supposed to have met Farid's friend at the main square at the arranged time. We arrived with our bags via the porter supplied by the riad, and then waited for Farid's friend. We waited almost an hour, and then finally took a ride from a local taxi driver to make sure that we did not miss our flight. To say the least, we struggle to understand how All Morocco Travel allows their drivers to leave their clients a day early instead of ensuring the safe completion of our tour. This was unprofessional and jeopardized our departure and potentially our safety. When we safely arrived at the airport, we sent All Morocco Travel an email regarding the situation. They have yet to respond, now approximately 36 hours later.
Ultimately, this tour fell well short of our expectations. We had to find our own way to the airport and we certainly wouldn’t recommend this tour company.
