7 Days in New Zealand's South Island, incl. Christchurch and Queenstown
Western South Island comes alive in 7 days across 8 destinations. Visit Westport's seal colony, Punakaiki's limestone formations, and Wanaka's lake views. Includes guided walks at Ship Creek and Thunder Creek Falls, with comfortable accommodation in historic coastal towns.

- Day 1
Christchurch to Westport
Leave Christchurch at 8 AM and stop at Hanmer Springs for a relaxing soak in the thermal pools. Remember to pack flip-flops since the concrete gets quite hot. The 3-hour drive to Reefton goes through Lewis Pass where you'll need warm clothes even in summer. Stop in Reefton to watch local guides show traditional gold panning. A recent visitor shared: "Watching the water-powered gold stamping battery working was fascinating - really brings the gold rush era to life."

- Day 2
Westport to Kumara
Visit Cape Foulwind early to see the fur seals when they're most active in the morning light. Take the open-air train through Nile River Canyon but bring a rain jacket since the rainforest stays wet even on clear days. Visit Punakaiki's Pancake Rocks at high tide to see the blowholes in action. Check local tide tables for timing. End your day in Kumara where you can enjoy incredible stargazing. A red flashlight will help protect your night vision.

- Day 3
Kumara to Fox Glacier
Get to Hokitika Gorge before 10 AM to see the bright turquoise waters without crowds. Bring binoculars to spot birds at Okarito Lagoon which is home to over 70 species. The 2.5-hour drive to Fox Glacier offers beautiful views of the Southern Alps. A recent visitor noted: "The road to Fox Glacier has some tight turns - take it slow and pull over often for photos."

- Day 4
Fox Glacier Area
Take an early morning walk around Lake Matheson when the water is calm for perfect reflection photos of Mt. Cook. The walk takes about 1.5 hours. Wear sturdy shoes as the path gets muddy. Book a glacier heli-hike ahead of time but have backup plans since weather often cancels flights. Try a pounamu carving workshop in town if it rains.

- Days 5-6
Wanaka
The 4-hour drive from Fox Glacier includes Thunder Creek Falls just a short 10-minute walk from parking. Once in Wanaka rent bikes to explore lakeside trails or take the water taxi to Mou Waho Island. Book the taxi early during peak season. Visit the famous Wanaka tree at sunrise for the best photos when the lake is calm. Pack a lunch to enjoy by the water.

- Day 7
Wanaka to Queenstown

- Day 1
Christchurch to Punakaiki
- Day 2
Punakaiki
Get to the Pancake Rocks early before the tour buses roll in around 10 AM. The walking track takes about 45 minutes. The paths can get slippery from sea spray, so wear good walking shoes. A recent visitor shared: "The blowholes are most spectacular at high tide, so check the tide times and plan accordingly."

- Days 3-5
Abel Tasman National Park
The 4-hour drive from Punakaiki follows the scenic West Coast, where you might spot seal colonies. In Abel Tasman, you can kayak the clear waters, walk sections of the coastal track, or spend time on the golden beaches. Book kayak trips at least a day ahead during peak season. Visit the Ngarua Caves and Te Waikoropupu Springs, which has some of the clearest fresh water in the world. Head to Golden Bay and Wharariki Beach on day three. Go in the morning to avoid strong afternoon winds. The beach is perfect for photography, especially the iconic rock archways. The walk to the beach takes about 20 minutes each way through farmland. Wear closed shoes if it has been raining.

- Day 6
Marlborough and Kaikoura
- Day 7
Kaikoura to Christchurch
Book early morning tours (7:30 AM) for dolphin swimming or whale watching. The marine life is most active then. One visitor noted: "The morning dolphin swim was incredible – we saw hundreds of dusky dolphins. Bring motion sickness pills and wear the thermal wetsuit they provide." The drive back to Christchurch takes about 2.5 hours.
