i took part on Julain & Juan's first tuk tuk adventure in 2009 and i still cant stop thinking about it. Experienced Sri Lanka in a whole new light with spills, thrills, and made a lot of friends on the way.

This is quite simply a must do trip. I have never been on an adventure like this and can't thank the team at Large Minority enough for organising it. I really hadn't given this trip too much thought before taking part in it and had no idea how challenging it was going to be. You will be taken out of your comfort zone everyday, whether it is asking locals whether they can cook you lunch at their house, sampling Toddy (strong coconut alcoholic drink), climbing high temples with missing steps in the rain and not to mention driving a tuktuk around the roads of Sri Lanka! It was a unique experience and one I will never forget.

We have undertaken two Large Minority "Challenges" the Lanka Challenge - our first was a honeymoon ...... some honeymoon! It was I think we agree one of the the best life experiences we have encountered .... of course second to the wedding. Go you will not be disappointed. To celebrate three years hitched and as experienced "challengers" we took on the 2015 Cambo Challenge - harder physically than the Lanka but just as stunning. Do either, do both but do one of them. “A rewarding Challenge like no other” “Somedays…you are sitting at work in your cubicle, bored, and wishing you were doing something more exciting than spreadsheets– but what? Now close your eyes and imagine you are racing along in a half motorbike, half car, 3 wheeled contraption, the engine is deafening, and a bus is trying to pass you on the inside, and there is a cow on the road ahead. It is hot, humid and you are still feeling the after effects of the previous day (and nights) activities. Hang on! You focus, make room for the bus, you deftly avoid the cow, and you are on to your next adventure! My son (Josh) and I completed the Lanka Challenge in 2012. I had heard about this event on a plane returning home from the USA, on the BBC channel. I knew immediately that was something I had to do. I enjoyed it so much, I returned in 2014, this time with my dear wife, Sandra (who is Sri Lankan). Each day you are set challenges, sometimes to get to a particular location (no GPS or Maps), then complete a fun but diabolical challenge, which in most cases taught us something about the local culture. I can thoroughly recommend the Lanka Challenge, especially for those of you interested in getting off the normal tourist trails. It is perfect for open minded, laid back people who are a tiny bit crazy. This is not a relaxing holiday, it is very much a very rewarding challenge like no other”. Now if only I can convince my daughter to do the Lanka Challenge with me.... Malcolm Chaney (Australian), Team Aussie Tukrobane

I joined Large Minority for one of their Lanka tours. Really well organized, super friendly people, and we had an awesome time. Planning to do their Philippines trip next.

Questions & Answers

Here we have collected and answered the most frequently asked questions about this tour.

    • So, why is Sri Lanka so amazing?

Short answer: come and find out for yourself. Long answer: it’s sort of like India, without the madness and crowds. It’s still mad, and there are still crowds, but not quite on the same scale. It’s also got a great cultural legacy from trade and immigration: Indian, Tamil, English, Portuguese, Dutch. Pretty much every seafaring culture has touched the island at some point, which means the food is seriously good.

    • What are the roads like in Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka has a good road network linking all the major cities, towns and interesting places. But don’t go expecting pristine tarmac everywhere you ride. Some of the rural roads in particular can get pretty wild and bumpy.

    • Do I need to get vaccinated?

This is completely up to you, but generally it’s a good idea to be up-to-date with standard vaccinations like Tetanus, Hap A and Polio. Other jabs to consider are Tuberculosis, Meningitis and Typhoid. Anti-malaria meds might also be a good idea. If in doubt, check with your GP.
