I took part in the Amazon Challenge, starting in Leticia Colombia, from the start I felt welcomed by everyone organising the trip. From each of the boat, tuk tuk or taxi drivers, to the local guides, to the local people and our guides/organisers Juan & Eliceo. The accomodation was better than expected, I knew we'd be sleeping rough, and expected that. But I didn't realise the nights in the hotel would be great, and the hammocks were actually pretty comfortable!! We had an amazing group, and I feel privileged to be a part of the first ever Amazon Challenge, I hope to take part in future Large Minority trips and would like to thank everyone involved.

Putting the race aside for a second, this was the most authentic tour I have been on in my life as a traveller. You go DEEP into places few have ventured, and really feel like you're getting the full experience. Its a great mix of challenge and immersion. For example, a spear throwing challenge in the middle of a tiny village where you have 100 locals cheering you on and laughing at your inability to throw a spear correctly at a tumbling wooden ball. My top 3 challenges: 1. Kayaking through the flooded rainforests of the Amazon. 2. Chilling with the Huitoto Shaman, and experiencing traditional Amazonian medicine. 3. Making a shelter, and sleeping in a hammock in the jungle, far from civilization. But really, the whole trip was WILD. I definitely recommend this to anyone who wants a challenge, and craves a life of trying new things. There were many firsts for us on this trip.

The Amazon. It's like the beginning of life. LUSH, is a word invented only to try and get somewhere near a description of this magical place. This was my third trip with Large Minority and it was good to see some familiar faces. Return customers is the best testimonial you can get I suppose. The challenge isnt always easy, but it's ever so rewarding. Hanging out with the indigenous tribes that are keen to share their wealth of knowledge with you. Imagine learning about the rainforest without David Attenborough having to tell whats going on. Amazing natural sights, and delicious food all whilst helping the local community. I loved the experience and would recommend 10/10. Cheers, Beaumer

The Amazon Challenge by Large Majority is an adventure I will never forget. It is a well planned out itinarery and route that takes you through Colombia, Peru and Brazil crossing paths with the communities that live along the Amazon. Adding a challenge element was great fun. Competing with teams and creating friendships with the other competitors as well as learning about the local way of life along the way was superb. It was physically challenging in a good way and it was fun to push yourself physically and mentally all whilst in the safe hands of the guide who has your back every step of the way. It's opened my eyes to a new way of travelling and can't wait to try out the other Large Majority challenges around the world. Once you've done one challenge you want to take them all on. The Amazon Challenge was a great introduction to South America and this type of travelling.

What can I say...the trip of a lifetime! I've been fortunate enough to have joined some of the previous Large Minority trips. The Amazon Challenge has a similar feel to the other Large Minority adventures - great group of people organizing and attending, authentic activities that bring us closer to the culture we are visiting, challenges that push us mentally and physically. On this trip, we trekked through the rainforest, canoed and swam down the river, stayed with local indigenous tribes (even went to a birthday party of one of their local tribal members!), fished for piranhas, competed in blow dart and spear throwing competitions, and more. Accommodations ranged from sleeping in a hammock you hang in the jungle to tribal homestays to hotels. It was an epic trip - you're gone for a week, but it feels like you're gone for a month!

Questions & Answers

Here we have collected and answered the most frequently asked questions about this tour.

    • Why is the Amazon so damn amazing?

How much time do you have? It’s the world longest river and largest rainforest. It’s home to hundreds of friendly indigenous tribes, some of whom have had very little contact with the outside world. Some of the rainforest you’ll be trekking through has hardly seen another human in its lifetime. And it’s home to dozens of amazing creatures straight out of a David Attenborough documentary. If you want remote, crazy adventure – this is where you go.

    • Where should I fly into?

Most of you will have to fly to Bogota first and then connect to Leticia. We recommend flying with Avianca or Latam. Alfredo Vasquez Cobo Airport is a 10-minute ride to the starting hotel.

    • Do I need vaccinations before I come to Colombia?

This is completely up to you (and your doc), but generally it’s a good idea to be up-to-date with standard vaccinations like Tetanus, Hap A and Polio. Other jabs to consider are Tuberculosis, Meningitis and Typhoid. Anti-malaria meds might also be a good idea. If in doubt, check with your GP.
