    1.5 - Rather poor

So I just completed the Rwanda to Zanzibar tour with Tucan. I have completed two previous overland tours of Africa, which I thoroughly enjoyed. . In relation to this tour it was the most unorganised and poor tour I have ever completed. Tucan states that its policy is that you will be guaranteed a seat with a seat belt. Quite interesting considering on the first day I was stuck in a minivan full of everyone's bags and three other people where we had to rotate every few hours where someone had to sit the wrong way and position their legs between the person they faced. This was for the six hour trip across the Ugandan border. . They advertise they have a large overlander truck that is used, well for this tour we used it for four days out of the 21 days, and the rest of the time was small over crowded mini vans. . On the gorilla trek my group was taken by the guides that Tucan uses to a group of three gorillas, where as another group saw 7 gorillas. The most we saw of the one silverback was side on after hanging off the side of the mountain. . In relation to some of the accommodation that Tucan uses, it was terrible, in Kampala our group was put in a hotel well outside the main part of the town with very basic rooms and shared bathrooms. These rooms were advertised for $30 each in the foyer of that hotel. This hotel did have rooms with ensuites but for some unknown reason Tucan decided not to pay for these. Considering I paid close to $5000 for this tour I expect something better, even in Africa. This continued at the Crayfish lodge in Lake Navaisha, in the room I used the beds were terrible, the linen dirty, the bathroom basin leaking continually and the showers cold. . The incompetence continued in the Masai Mara, where two vehicles broke down and at one point we had ten people in once again mini vans not Four Wheels drive while we did the overland tour. To top that off because my bag was in the rear of one of these broken down vans, I did not get my bag until around 9pm that night. The accommodation at the Masai Mara camp was basic to say the least! . In terms of the food provided during the tour it was basic, probably the highlight of how poor the food was when I opened up my lunchbox to an 'Orange Rind' sandwich. I didn't expect 5 star food, but this was a new level. This was the same in the Crater where the food is basically spaghetti and mince to cater for large groups. Not the best quality. . In terms of the Tour manager Fraser he was friendly but I have a had a lot better tour managers, his communication could improve, and just general briefings. He also need to take control of allocation of rooms, as many times we had people grabbing keys and at one point the husband of a middle aged New Zealand couple dictating what room he got because he didn't want to be near the bar or anywhere too noisy because he was a light sleeper. . In terms of value for money I would advise to look elsewhere, whoever did the groundwork for the accommodation and the separate groups that Tucan uses for the Masai Mara is kidding. I have done some of these sections before and there is better quality. . So despite what response Tucan gives, as other people on my tour have complained and they have basically said they rejected all the claims made. Another interesting point was that this feedback was provided to their email address with no reply. Once it was posted on social media the reply was very swift. . I can guarantee two things, I will never use Tucan again and I will never recommend them.

Hi Stu, thank you for your feedback. We try to provide as much information as possible on our website to prepare all of our clients for what a tour in Africa would involve. This includes early starts, some basic accommodation and cold showers. There are also some things which are outside of our control, like the gorilla family you are allocated by the Ugandan Wildlife Authority. Yes, in East Africa, we use a variety of four wheel drives, minivans and our overland trucks to get around. However, your itinerary states that it is on day 5 of your tour that you see your truck for the first time. Due to the difficult terrain these vehicles are navigating, they can break down occasionally and it is unfortunate that this happened on your tour, however, measures were taken to ensure that the excursion was not impacted upon. Once again, we can only apologise that you did not enjoy your tour.
