We had a really nice busdriver. The nice thing about Stray is that they bring you to places where i would never ever go on my own. They have showed me the highlights of the country. The activities they offer are awesome and really worth the money. They book all the accomodations for you (if you want) which makes it a lot easier for you to travel. I never really had a bad experience in one of the accomodations.

Stray facilitated a great time in New Zealand! I had great drivers and did some amazing activities. The busses were at times less modern than expected and the promised wifi was very absent. Please make sure to reserve a spot on the bus at least a month in advance (in summer) as they tend to fill up fast, especially if you're doing any of the extra passes. I would recommend Stray to anyone who asks, just be prepared to make it a little more organized if you're on a tight schedule, as a book-as-you-go strategy only works if you have about double the alotted time. Stray allowed my to meet some amazing people on my travels and really experience new things!

Loved stray ! Best trip ever ! Had twinkles and possum the coolest drivers ! Loved hiking the glacier and blue duck station ! Made some awesome friends and every day we stopped at some amazing photo shoots free walks and had great accomdation . I would not have two cultural nights though I felt I was given no choice but to go through we both and the first I did not enjoy much for 80 dollars the second was amazing with the amazing lake hostel and food cooked in the ground . I did find that I probably spent double what I would have with all the cafe stops and things I wasn't aware of but overall it was an awesome experience X

I had a great time, met friendly people and got to see a lot of New Zealand! Unfortunately, most of the time I was on a bus with a new bus driver who was nice as a person but not well organized as a bus driver. So we missed lots of stops and were always late. I can totally understand that you take wrong turns etc. when you are new (everyone starts at some point and needs experience ;)). But being late in the morning because you partied too hard the night before is not acceptable for a bus driver. The other two bus drivers I had were friendly and much more reliable. The hostels were alright except for the Rainforest Lodge at Franz Joseph. I'm sure there are better (cleaner, friendlier staff, working facilities...) hostels. It would be awesome if you stopped in Christchurch city and not only at the airport!

Using stray was an absolutely amazing experience. You get to meet great, like minded people, spend as long as you like at each location, and explore the whole of New Zealand rather than just the cities. I would highly recommend stray to anyone that wants to experience the entirety of NZ while having heaps of fun along the way.

Stray is a good option if you're travelling alone and want to meet people but still be free to do your own thing. It's advertised as a hop on hop off service but honestly in peak times it can be incredibly difficult to deviate from your initial itinerary as you can stuck at a place and not be able to hop back on a bus until there's a place available and there doesn't seem to be any proper wait list in place. The accommodation varies drastically. Some of the lodges are beautiful and very comfortable. However, on the other hand you could be in just one big room with everybody else or a triple bunk type room with very little floor space. I found the owners of some of the accommodation to be quite rude, with the mentality of you being a bunch of backpackers and not owed the same respect as other visitors, namely the Tongariro national park accommodation for example. I liked that Stray really takes you off the beaten track and at times I really did feel immersed in the Maori culture. However, one of the culture stops was completely overpriced and a lot of people felt very cheated. The second one at Lake Anawhenua was also pricey but much better value for money. The Stray drivers vary from character to character. Some are more accommodating than others. Some are more in the spirit of travel than others, Some are more vigilant and dedicated to the job than others. It just depends on who you end up with. It's great that you can do everything you want to do in a short space of time on the Stray trip with drivers making sure you get the most out of the trip at every opportunity - stopping to allow time for taking walks etc. Some people didn't like this as it at time did feel like a school field trip where we were shuffled on and off the bus and you lose your independence a bit. Overall it was a great experience. I think to improve it, Stray could run more buses to ensure people can hop off, reassess some of the accommodation choices and cut the first Maouri cultural stop.

Thank you for the constructive feedback, Clare. We really do appreciate the details about how we can improve Stray, the service from our drivers and our overnight stops. We do know hopping on and off during peak season was a challenge and we're working on a plan of action to make it better for next year. I am glad you enjoyed your experience overall! Cheers, Lisa

Turned out to be the best vacation I have ever experienced and I am 42 years old. The Shortmax pass gave me the possibility to explore both islands and I had the pleasure of meeting so many wonderful people coming from all corners in the world. And it all started with our designated driver and guide called Lantern (yes, as in the Green Lantern), a young man that loves his job, his beautiful country and his passengers. I have had the time of my life in these 3 weeks. I will be back ;-)

I was able to sort through the various trips until I found a couple I wanted to take. After I booked I misjudged the travel time between when one tour ended and when I had to get to the next one (I didn't realize there were no evening flights where I was). TourRadar was great in connecting me with the tour operator and they were in turn great with helping me change the itinerary so I could do both trips without any extra hassle.
