We purchased the Lot Pass and I thoroughly enjoyed my trip with Stray Asia. We enjoyed the opportunity to hop-on and off and we did this six times throughout our trip, although this would have been made easier if there was more frequent buses (currently X2 a week). At times the travelling can be intense and I therefore recommend hopping-off for a better experience. The Stray tour guilds are fantastic. They are highly professional and happy to share information with you. The fact that stray is willing to book your accmodation on your behalf, means you can save time and untilise your time in each area. Overall the Stray accmodation has been of a high quality and you are charged a fair price. Originally we were not intending to book any accmodation through stray as we thought the company/ guides would take commision; but this doesn't seem to be the case. We booked many activities through Stray and all of them were of a good standard. The tour guilds were helping if recommending and arranging activities on our behalf. Our tour guild also assisted us in arranging further travel to Sapa and Halong Bay. There were varying groups sizes along our trip, averaging at around 10people. Most of the time it felt like a private tour. It was easy to get to know other travellers and optional group meals were planned to help us to get to know others more. The transport Stray used was comfortable, spacious and also had good AC. I highly recommend Stray and I would consider travelling with them again in the future.

    2.0 - Rather poor

The stray bus in Asia is great if you have a lot of time, it is not as flexible as they say it is and as is in new Zealand. In Lao the guide are not so good, they are more worried in get drunk and hook up with girls, and they stop in a lot of places that they do not need to stop and where even the guides says there is nothing to do. In Cambodia the guide was really amazing and helped a lot. InVietnam, stray should really consider night buses, once the trips are really longs and we lost a lot of days on the bus and the roads are not as bas as in Lao. Although was an amazing trip and I enjoyed every moment, I was expecting more of stray. Another point is, especially in Vietnam never stay in the places they recommend, only in bai xep. They normally choose expensive guests houses instead of hostels. For lunch, they a lot of times stop in expensive places with not a lot of option. And be carefully when they say to do a night dinner, in lao the guide only took was in places where he could get free food and a lot of time were not a good place. In Cambodia the guide was really good and let us choose where to go.
Stray Asia commented on this review
Hi Bianca, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and for your recommendations. Night buses are something we have considered but are considered more dangerous with the volume of buses and lorries/trucks travelling at high speed on the highways and open roads at night. We will keep looking into a way we can improve our tours though. When it comes to accommodation and food, on a hop-on hop-off pass you are always very welcome to choose these options for yourself, we're sorry if you felt you had to go with the guide's recommendations as this should not be the case, the point of the hop-on hop-off pass is having the flexibility to choose. We've followed up on your feedback about the guide in Laos as this is not acceptable behaviour. We're glad you still had an amazing trip and enjoyed every moment and thanks again for the feedback.

Southeast Asia was nothing like I expected. It was such an amazing cultural experience. To be able to travel to four different countries which are all close together geographically but so different in terms of development, food, and people was surprising. Traveling with stray I felt very comfortable knowing I didn't have to worry or plan my bussing except when I wanted to hop off made it that more of a care free experience. Would recommend it to anyone who wants an adventure for sure!

When we first purchased our Stray Pass from STA we weren't entirely sure what we had actually bought. We were told it was a hop on hop off bus pass but it ended up being so much more! SE Asia was our first stop of our round the world trip and so it was great having a guide in each country to ease us into the stresses of travelling (finding accommodation, getting from place to place, getting used to the currencies etc). All of our leaders were very friendly and helpful and knew a lot about their country. The fact that we were able to 'get off the beaten track' was also something we thoroughly enjoyed and would not have done if we had decided to travel around SE Asia on our own. It was great that Stray had recommended accommodation for each destination but towards the end of our Stray Pass we were getting into the swing of things and becoming more clued up about budgeting so it was also nice that we were able to book our own accommodation and find cheaper places to stay nearby. My boyfriend and I were travelling with Stray for over 2 months and we loved the great variety of places we saw, activities we were offered and different people we were able to meet along the way! I would thoroughly recommend Stray to anyone that is thinking about travelling around SE Asia!

The tubing experience is more sedate now than in days past, but it’s still a real highlight to float down the river soaking up the beautiful mountain surrounds. Aside from tubing, Vang Vieng offers great rock climbing and kayaking options. We also recommend visiting the Blue Lagoon, one of the best natural swimming holes in Laos. The fun doesn’t stop after an adventure filled day either! This evening, check out one of several international restaurants for a taste of home or head to one of the bars to really get the party started.
