An amazing itinerary and visits most places you’d want to go in Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. The Laos tour guides were particularly amazing (Pao and La). Transport and border crossings were very easy, just as I wanted. There are a few improvements to be made though. Firstly the accommodation was always questionable and I rarely chose to stay in the Stray choice. It would always be good to be able to stay in more places for 3 nights, as 1/2 was too often short but 5/6 was too many if you hopped off. Finally I often found that my group had less than 3 people and no more than 7 ever, it would have been good to have known this in advance as it forced me to hop off when I did not want to.

Thanks for your review and suggestions Samantha. The Stray accommodation we recommend is usually local guest houses, hostels and basic hotels, and we know this doesn't always suit everyone's accommodation style, but that's the beauty of having the freedom to choose what suits you and your budget. In low season (May - September) group sizes are often smaller. We are also working towards more departures and hope to increase departures when volume increases. We are glad that overall you had a great time, enjoyed the itinerary and traveling with our local guides. Thank you for the feedback :)

My trip has been amazing! Onh Lovaninh made me feel very comfortable and i really felt like he knew everything about whatever i asked him. I felt very safe and he became a real part of our group and was gutted To see him leave us. Onhs a real asset to stray, hes trustworthy and works to his full potential every single minute of every day. Thanks Onh and the stray team!

So far my trip the stray has been really great and organised. It’s been made so effortless by our fantastic tour leader Onh. For the whole group he has made everyone feel relaxed but he’s so thourough with his checks for us and helping us get planned. It’s a shame hes now on parental leave but we wish him all the best with his new baby and thank him for making the start of our trip with stray really great. - Sarah Loftus

In Phnom Phen our leader took us down a street of young women wearing hardly anything. We tried to ask one of the girls in the club (I won’t list it for security reasons) what was happening and she just cried. Please don’t go. The stray leader said they aren’t prosititutes but that they only want men because it’s better business. The Stray company only print pictures of young athletic people to sells certain image which i don’t think is fair. I liked them until here, if you believe in equality don’t go

Still on my Lot Pass at the moment but I want to say how amazing the experience has been so far. All my tour guides have been great. Onh, Doc and Pow were great, but I want to give a special shout out to Chao. This guy seriously loved his job and it shows. He’s so full of energy and information on every single place we have been between Luang Prabang and Siem Reap. Best tour guide I’ve ever had on any destination!

We purchased the Lot Pass and I thoroughly enjoyed my trip with Stray Asia. At times the travelling can be intense and I therefore recommend hopping-off for a better experience. The Stray tour guilds are fantastic. They are highly professional and happy to share information with you. The fact that stray is willing to book your accmodation on your behalf, means you can save time and untilise your time in each area. Overall the Stray accmodation has been of a high quality and you are charged a fair price. Originally we were not intending to book any accmodation through stray as we thought the company/ guides would take commision; but this doesn't seem to be the case. We booked many activities through Stray and all of them were of a good standard. The tour guilds were helping if recommending and arranging activities on our behalf. Our tour guild also assisted us in arranging further travel to Sapa and Halong Bay. There were varying groups sizes along our trip, averaging at around 10people. Most of the time it felt like a private tour. It was easy to get to know other travellers and optional group meals were planned to help us to get to know others more. The transport Stray used was comfortable, spacious and also had good AC. I highly recommend Stray and I would consider travelling with them again in the future.

    2.0 - Rather poor

The stray bus in Asia is great if you have a lot of time, it is not as flexible as they say it is and as is in new Zealand. In Lao the guide are not so good, they are more worried in get drunk and hook up with girls, and they stop in a lot of places that they do not need to stop and where even the guides says there is nothing to do. In Cambodia the guide was really amazing and helped a lot. InVietnam, stray should really consider night buses, once the trips are really longs and we lost a lot of days on the bus and the roads are not as bas as in Lao. Although was an amazing trip and I enjoyed every moment, I was expecting more of stray. Another point is, especially in Vietnam never stay in the places they recommend, only in bai xep. They normally choose expensive guests houses instead of hostels. For lunch, they a lot of times stop in expensive places with not a lot of option. And be carefully when they say to do a night dinner, in lao the guide only took was in places where he could get free food and a lot of time were not a good place. In Cambodia the guide was really good and let us choose where to go.
Stray Asia commented on this review
Hi Bianca, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and for your recommendations. Night buses are something we have considered but are considered more dangerous with the volume of buses and lorries/trucks travelling at high speed on the highways and open roads at night. We will keep looking into a way we can improve our tours though. When it comes to accommodation and food, on a hop-on hop-off pass you are always very welcome to choose these options for yourself, we're sorry if you felt you had to go with the guide's recommendations as this should not be the case, the point of the hop-on hop-off pass is having the flexibility to choose. We've followed up on your feedback about the guide in Laos as this is not acceptable behaviour. We're glad you still had an amazing trip and enjoyed every moment and thanks again for the feedback.

Questions & Answers

Here we have collected and answered the most frequently asked questions about this tour.

    • Can we get off and on at any destination through the course of the tour?

Yes you can hop off wherever you like on the Stray route. And if you let the Tour Leader know your plans, they can recommend the places for you to hop off.

    • Is there a particular timetable that we need to follow?

You don't need to follow a set of itinerary, you can just hop off and on as you please. But there is a timetable for the departures, you will need to take note of it so you will know when to hop back on the tour again.

Before hopping on, passengers are usually asked to book a seat on the bus. However, you can also hop on last-minute without pre-booking a seat depending on the availability.
