    2.0 - Rather poor

SCAM! This company is a scam for travelers looking for an adventure. Preying on people who want to open their hearts and minds, We Are Bamboo’s great marketing lures you in, but it’s just smoke and mirrors. The reality is you don’t get what you pay for and the We Are Bamboo corporate team is unresponsive and disorganized. I am deeply disappointed by this experience and would advise travelers to AVOID THIS COMPANY AT ALL COSTS. You can do better with any other vendor, or booking an adventure on your own. Here are the 2 biggest reasons my 2-week excursion was less than satisfactory: - Poorly organized. Expect to waste a lot of time on this trip. I did the Thailand/Cambodia 2-week voluntour and I’m heart broken because I traveled 24 hours to this part of the world to do a whole lot of nothing. The elephant village is a joke. You arrive on a Monday and leave on Friday. During that entire time, you spend 3-4 hours tops with the elephants. You participate in manual labor activities that support the village for a total of 3-4 hours. This is 8 hours max of actual volunteering. Other planned activities allotted for 6, maybe 8 hours (if I’m being generous). So this is 16 hours of planned stuff, the rest is unplanned. There is a lot of sitting around, with nothing to do. It would be different if there was a local attraction or something we could do/explore on our own, but there isn’t. You are essentially stranded in the middle of nowhere and a prisoner to whatever the company sets up for you. I would’ve rather worked 4 hour days with 4 hours of planned activities, or even just worked a full 8 hour day. I paid good money and traveled incredibly far to do something. This was the greatest disappointment. It was heartbreaking. - You don’t get what you pay for. The team does not take care of you when it comes to meals. When our group first arrived, it was the second night that we knew something was off. The dinner they provide is a handful of appetizer sized dishes that are the cheapest items on the menu. Meanwhile, enjoy the view from your table as you watch staff indulge in fresh fish cooked at their table. The trip continued in this way, with horrible food comprising the menu of meals provided. At the elephant village, we were served the same rice and noodle dish everyday for lunch and dinner (with the exception of one meal). Breakfast is the same - you make your own from a selection of bread, eggs, butter, and peanut butter. Note that the breakfast supplies will run out and you might not even get breakfast. - You don’t get what you pay for, part 2: accommodations. I wasn’t expecting the Ritz, but after seeing what money buys you, the accommodations they provide cannot be justified for what you pay. Some of the places we stayed at came out to around $6-12/person. They weren’t the greatest accommodations, but if I’m paying $1500 for a trip and only $150 goes to accommodations for the entire stay, I’d like some of my money back please. Needless to say, the group I was with did the math on the cost of the entire trip and it wasn’t more than $400-500 per person (so the company pockets $1000-1100 per person). Also, there are a lot of additional things you have to pay for on your own while you’re there. In the end, save yourself the disappointment and money. The group I traveled with all felt the same way about this experience. Many left the trip early (myself included) because the Bamboo team continued to disappoint and was unresponsive when we tried to work things out. They are just here to take your money, and they do it by telling you what you want to hear. Once they have your money, you’re trapped; don’t expect to get any responses to your emails.

Questions & Answers

Here we have collected and answered the most frequently asked questions about this tour.

  • Is the airfare included on this trip?

TourRadar specializes in giving you the best tours from around the world, however the tours we offer do not include airfare and we do not book or advise on airfare. You will be responsible for booking your flights to meet with the group at the starting city. We do not recommend booking airfare before confirming your tour. A good website to search for great prices would be kayak.com and/or skyscanner.com

  • I would like to know which airport I need to fly to in Thailand and from which airport will I fly out from in Cambodia.

You should fly in to Bangkok International Airport (Named Suvarnabhumi and has the airport code; BKK). This is where the tour will begin. At the end of the tour you will be in the town of Siem Reap in Cambodia. It's very easy to get a flight from there back to Bangkok so it could be a good option to get yourself a return flight to Bangkok, then purchase a flight from Siem Reap to Bangkok. There are many low-cost airlines in Asia such as AirAsia, and there are many boutique airlines such as Bangkok Air, or Angkor Air. A simple online search will give you some good options.
