Global Visions International is an amazing organization. The program I was involved with made a huge impacting helping children ages 3-7. During my 6 weeks volunteering I was able to see so much change in the children. From not being able to speak any English to after only 6 weeks being able to comprehend and speak simple words and phrases understanding so much better. This allowed them to engage with other children and express themselves in a more positive way. The impact made in such a short time is motivating to want to do more. 6 weeks went by incredibly fast during my stay I met so many new and amazing people that life on project was never a dull moment. Constant laughter and happiness from all volunteers and GVI staff made my trip personally amazing. The staff members GVI has employed are also inspiring people that are there for you every step of the way. Anything you need they are there to help. After project this organization has motivated me to try to further my volunteer work by helping others and educated me on worldwide problems that require our help. The staff and other volunteers also become life long friends constantly keeping in touch with connections all around the world. Global visions international is an organization that is changing lives around the world.

I had the most exciting and culturally immersive experience volunteering with children in South Africa. I arrived knowing little about the country, other than the existences of townships and poverty, and was so grateful that the first part of the program was getting briefed by a local guide about what to expect and the amazing graciousness and community aspects that exist within South Africa. From being cooked local means, to quizzes and fun facts of the day, GVI ensured that you felt apart of the country and truly got to experience it. I spent 2 weeks at Lkhayalethemba Nursery working both orphans Mama had taken in and local school children. I was struck by how eager the children where to learn and the pride they took in it. The moment you walk though the gates you are greeted with 30 children chanting "teacher , teacher" as they help you carry your bags. GVI ensured that everything we did was meaningful, from helping the children with their basic English and maths skills, to working with special needs children and helping them play physical activities they otherwise wouldn't have access to. Over the 2 weeks I really got to know some of the children, and they are still close to my heart. You truly get to see the immediate impact your time makes. Despite only being there for a week, you felt so upset to leave the orphanage, but so overjoyed to know that you had had an impact. In the afternoons and weekends we had the ability to explore Cape Town. Our Guides were quick to help us with suggesting and booking activities, using their expertise to ensuring we got the best deal and experience. I went up table mountain, ate ice-cream on the beech, zip-lined over waterfalls. I met some amazing people from around the work, who I am still in touch with today. The lessons I learn have improved my world outlook and I cant wait to go away with GVI again as soon as possible.

I had one of the most challenging, eye-opening and amazing experiences with GVI this last summer. I arrived with an understanding of how difficult life can be for people living in poverty from previous travelling but it was still just as shocking to drive through the townships to find people living and working in shipping containers made into shops and homes. As we drove through the community, people would be going about their normal daily life with children running around barefoot, despite their being rubbish and sharp objects on the ground, women gathered together at washing tables and people opening up their hardware shops, hair salons and various other trading containers. It felt very surreal to be in an environment that was so different to back home but also made the work of GVI even more meaningful. We were there to not judge the community for being different or less developed but to support their growth and development to becoming the best community they could be through educating: either the children in the nursery, the women in the women’s empowerment group or the people who took part in the healthcare project. All GVI projects worked hard and strived for the goal of supporting development in a sustainable way. During my short 2 weeks volunteering with GVI, I worked at Lkhayalethemba Nursery. We ran various different classes over the course of a week, getting to know all of the children. We would start each day with the youngest children, helping them through song to learn the days of the week, how to count, different parts of our body and listening skills through call and response songs. We then had a schedule to teach the other classes in a rotation over the week. Over the 2 weeks, we made sea life pictures, we sang different songs, we showed the children a science experiment, helped children with their letter formation and took them to the park. Alongside this we each day we helped the nursery children clean their teeth, helping them to understand how important this is. I fully enjoyed my experience with GVI; along the project and knowing I was contributing to sustainably developing the world, I met some wonderfully people from all around the world who all share the same ambitions to create a world where people are valued, educated and supported. I cannot wait to be able to sign up with GVI again to continue our journey in achieving this.

    2.0 - Rather poor

My experience with GVI in South Africa was very poor and i would not book another project with them. The womens empowerment project in SA does not exist and it was quite obviously that GVI had not prepared any project or workshops ahead of the volunteers arriving for this project. This was massively disappointing and totally misleading. I'd only wished that i had follow my gut feeling and booked with another organisations. This project left me feeling dissatisfied with the GVI organisation.

During the winter months Cape Town weather can get cold especially in the evenings accommodation in South Africa generally don't include central heating.
