3 words to describe Curieuse? Sun, Sweat and Selfies. My 4 weeks on Curieuse Island were everything I expected and more. Thanks to this program, I now have friends all over the world and a much more solid understanding of the importance of the different aspects of the ecosystem. I feel like I have contributed to the protection of some of the endemic species of the Seychelles, such as the Coco de Mer palm. It has also confirmed that once I graduate from my degree in Zoology, I want to work out in the field. During my time on Curieuse, I swam with sharks, took selfies with giant tortoises, sank knee deep into mud, played a real life version of Monopoly to raise money for the GVI Charitable Trust and made some of the greatest friends possible. I was also able to explore the surrounding islands at weekends, including the lovely La Digue and was trained to be an Emergency First Responder. Now I have experienced volunteering with GVI, I don’t think I could go anywhere with anyone else. GVI are the perfect organisation to volunteer with. Whenever I talk about my month with any of my friends, I can’t help but have a massive grin plastered onto my face. I highly recommend this programme to anyone, even if it is out of your comfort zone. Best 4 weeks of my life.

I spent a month as a wildlife conservation volunteer with GVI on Curieuse Island 2 years ago. I absolutely loved my time there! I loved it so much I went back again in October 2017 to visit. I had no previous experience but the staff on the island gave us all the training required to carry out the surveys and they were experts in their field. The daily surveys included excavating Hawksbill and Green turtle nests, tagging lemon shark pups in the mangroves and monitoring the island's giant tortoises. We had so much fun climbing the endemic Coco de Mer trees to measure their leaves. The snorkelling trips to Anse Lazio and Anse Petit Cour were amazing and we swam with turtles! Accommodation was basic and shared but to go to sleep at night listening to the waves lapping just feet away from your bed was magical. I loved living on an island inhabited by giant tortoises and it was possible to experience a castaway feeling on Curieuse, especially when the last day tourists had left the island. At weekends we stayed on La Digue Island and Praslin exploring the beaches, cycling and snorkelling. I spent 4 unforgettable days on Bird Island where I have never felt so close to nature. Overall it exceeded my expectations and I would go back in a heartbeat.

Sitting on Dexter boat and approaching Curieuse Island, my future home for the whole month of April, and looking in tirquoise water, bright endless sky, I was allready in love. All the hard work I have done in the past month, all the hikes, muddy feet, mosquito bites, made me so proud and aware I have contributed on something good. This changed me inside, and made me see the only way of my future - live in harmony with nature, fight for it, share the knowledge and spread the awareness among people. I have learned so much while working on surveys on Curieuse and while finishing my GVI's team leadership internship. I will never stop educating myself in this field. I had the best time of my life with the best team ever. I am looking forvard to new adventures with GVI.

As an volunteer in the Seychelles, you truly have some once in a lifetime experiences. I still have to remind myself that it wasn't all a dream, it was in fact reality! I was involved in a massive range of projects during my time on Curiuse. One day we'd me tickling tortoises to keep tabs on their progress, the next we would be wading swimming through the mangroves taking soil samples to measure the salinity and temperature. It's safe to say no two days are the same on this program! I never felt out of my comfort zone when I was there too. The staff are all experts in their fields so they know the limits and have been doing it for years! They also know great places to go during your free time, so on the weekends we weren't short of ideas! Cycling around La Digue, relaxing at the Paradise hotel and eating all of the ice cream on Praslin were just a few things we got up to as a group at the weekends.

Questions & Answers

Here we have collected and answered the most frequently asked questions about this tour.

    • Will there be any free time on program?

Definitely! You will be based in and around national parks in the main group of islands, and working on a diverse range of wildlife and habitats on and around Curieuse Island. Access to and from the island is only by boat so travel to other islands is limited to weekends. Praslin has a limited, cheap bus service and taxis are easily available. For further exploration you may choose to hire a car on Praslin or make use of the inter-island ferry services between the other islands.
In your down time you will be free to travel in the local area and can expect one or two free days per week, usually at weekends. In this time you could explore the islands of Praslin or La Digue, visit the capital of Mahé, Victoria (although the ferry to Mahe is relatively expensive), visit local beaches, snorkel or just relax on base. Before and after your program you could spend a little more time in the Seychelles on the close-by islands of Praslin and La Digue, or join a charter to sail even further afield. Please allow several days if you hope to travel between islands, there are over 100 in the archipelago but getting around takes time – the possibilities are endless!

    • What are some tips for volunteers travelling out to the field?

Don't pack too many cosmetics you can buy the basics in country
Pack an outfit for the weekend in case you decide to go out
Make sure you bring enough money to visit some of the other islands
An underwater case for my camera enabled me to get some amazing photos

    • What are the various durations of this program that are available

This program runs for anything from 2, 4, 6, 8,10 and 12 week durations, depending on the time of year and specific starting date. Please inquire for information regarding this
