- Day 1
Lund
You'll arrive in Lund by way of Travemünde, Trelleborg, or Copenhagen and get settled into this charming university city. The place has a real character with its cobbled streets, half-timbered houses, and scattered parks and cafés throughout. There's also a strong presence of innovative companies and research centers mixed in with the historic feel. After checking into your accommodation, you'll have your first evening to get oriented and perhaps grab dinner somewhere local.

- Day 2
Lund to Karlskrona
Starting from Lund, you'll head to Ystad, the crime city where Kurt Wallander stories take place. The half-timbered houses and historic market square Stortorget give it real character. From there, you'll drive south to see Åseberga's coastal cliffs and Ales Stenar, an ancient Viking ship settlement with mysterious origins. Later you'll pass through Simrishamn and explore Stenshuvud National Park with its beech forests and sandy beaches. The route continues through Kivik's apple orchards and then Boafalls Backe's hilly terrain before reaching Karlskrona, a baroque city spread across 33 islands with UNESCO-listed buildings and an important naval port.

- Day 3
Karlskrona to Växjö
You'll travel inland into Småland's landscape of endless lakes and forests, then head to the glass kingdom featuring 13 different glassworks. Each produces its own distinctive style of Swedish art glass. If you're interested, there's Nybro's moose park to check out before reaching Växjö, a university and abbey town on Lake Helga. The collegiate church here has a glass art altar cabinet worth seeing, and the town itself has a peaceful atmosphere by the water.

Växjö to Nyköping
Today takes you into the Småland countryside where author Astrid Lindgren grew up. You'll explore Eksjö, a 600-year-old wooden town where the alleyways and courtyards feel like time has stopped. From there, you'll head to Vimmerby, Lindgren's birthplace, before finishing in historic Nykoping on the Baltic coast. The entire route gives you a sense of the rural Sweden that inspired much of her writing.

Nyköping to Stockholm
You'll drive along Lake Mälaren with options to detour. Mariefred and Gripsholm Castle are worth stopping for if you're interested, and Trosa is another option, famous for being the filming location of numerous Inga Lindström films. Later you'll arrive in Stockholm, one of the world's most beautiful capitals, built across numerous islands. The city's geography and architecture will become clearer as you drive through and settle in for the next few days.

- Day 6
Stockholm
Stockholm offers plenty to see. You'll visit the Vasa Museum and Skansen open-air museum on Djurgården, then check out the royal palace and Gamla Stan, Europe's largest medieval old town with winding alleyways full of antique shops, handicraft galleries, and cafés. Climbing Stockholm's City Hall tower gives you great views over the old town and surrounding islands. If you want more activities, there's an optional guided bike tour or boat trip to Drottningholm Palace, the current royal residence.

- Day 7
Stockholm to Karlstad
You'll drive through the Stockholm lake district past castles and estates, heading toward Örebro where there's an optional castle visit on a small island in town. The route continues through the scenic Kilsbergen mountain range to Karlstad on Lake Värnern. Once there, you can explore the cathedral and theatre, walk across Sweden's longest stone bridge Östra Bron, and spend time relaxing on the shores of Sweden's largest lake.

- Day 8
Karlstad to Gothenburg
You'll travel along Lake Värnern through forests and cross the Göta Canal at Sjötorp. A detour to Trollhättan shows you impressive waterfalls on the Göta River with a scenic viewpoint and 19th-century locks that are a technical feat connecting the canal to the lake. After that, you'll continue to Gothenburg on Sweden's southwest coast. The drive takes you through varied terrain and historical sites related to Sweden's waterway system.

Gothenburg
In Gothenburg, you'll explore a cultural and economic center often compared to San Francisco for its bridges, hills, water, and fish restaurants. Beautiful landmarks include Gustav Adolfs Torg and Göta Square with its artistic Neptune Fountain. The Botanical Gardens are worth a walk through. An optional paddan tour on flat-bottomed boats lets you navigate narrow canals and low bridges, giving you a unique perspective of the city's waterways.

Gothenburg to Helsingborg
Heading toward the southern archipelago coast, you'll visit Varberg Fortress and Falkenberg along the way. The route takes you to Kullen nature reserve north of Helsingborg, which has steep coasts, rocky caves, beaches, and hiking trails. At Kullaberg on the peninsula tip, you'll see Scandinavia's brightest lighthouse. Later you'll arrive in Helsingborg at the narrowest point of the Öresund strait, historically the gateway to Denmark. There's an optional viewpoint at Kärnan for views over the city and strait.
