    1.5 - Rather poor

India was AMAZING! But spoilt by Shakti our tour 'leader'. He was not friendly at all. He ignored members of the group when they asked questions. When i asked him to give us some information on Varanasi he said 'I am not paid for that' - what is he paid for?! The little information he did tell us, we later found out it was wrong- from google. At one point he confronted me in front of the entire group asking why i didnt tip a man who gave a 20 minute talk, this was embarrassing for me and uncomfortable for everyone else. I told him earlier in the day that we like to tip people like cycle rickshaw drivers and people who we feel we want to tip- not when he is telling us to. At one point he said to a member of the group ' get your purse out'. The hotels we stayed in were poor, the toilet in 2 of the hotels didnt flush and at a hotel in tordi there was not electricity or hot water! I have been to india before and i stayed in 4-5 star hotels so i know this isnt all over india. Whilst in india i emailed geckos twice to say how shakti is spoiling our experience. At times i was even in tears, we were in the jeep which was so uncomfortable, you couldnt sit up straight because the roof was so low and seats were high, this also meant you cant see out of the windows and there had been a storm so the seats were soaking which made our shorts wet. When we got back to england we emailed geckos about 4 times and they basically shrugged it off. they didnt apologise and they didnt care really. Our holiday was spoilt by the tour guide. I would not use this company again. I went to india with newmarket holidays for the same price which included food, 5 star hotels and all enterance fees and a tour guide who was amazing, this included poor hotels, a rubbish tour guide and thats it. If your looking for a tour use another company but if your looking to do it by yourself then save your money and dont go through geckos or intrepid travel. We worked out we would have saved hundreds of pounds doing it by ourselves - which really is what we did do considering Shakti didnt do a thing- what is he paid for? I would love his job because being friendly is even asking too much! He just didnt want to be there.

    4.5 - Excellent

This was a very enjoyable tour - well organized and good value. The hotels were far more comfortable than I would have expected and we had the right amount of flexibility in activities. The guide was great when i needed to get stitches in my head while in Kathmandu and there was conveniently a doctor on tour with us who could remove them a week later! Transport was comfortable and the guides were knowledgeable - we had 2 main guides - one for Nepal and one for india. Highlights for me were Kathmandu, Varanasi and Agra.

    4.5 - Excellent

Considering what we paid, we were happy with the transportation and the quality of the hotels for the price and given the towns we were in (some smaller, very developing areas - so don't expect Hilton's, etc). The guide left a little something to be desired, as he stirred us in the wrong direction on numerous occasions because of financial incentives for him (a few bad restaurants, a few overpriced shops) - but when confronted with this, he said this was the nature of travel in India (the guides all make commissions off of their recommendations). This may be the case, but I wish he wasn't so obvious about it.
