Tom "I took the Vodkatrain trip in August 2009 at the beginning of a long trip away. I would thoroughly recommend the trip to anyone. It was exactly what I was after in terms of a pre booked trip. The 'Honchos' give you the advice and guidance you need, without being a tour group leader. There is no "be here at 6am or we leave" or "you must come with us the the shopping centre" They are more like local..."

One of the best trips of my life. Best part = sticking your head out of the window to get a better look at the train going around a bend.

    2.0 - Rather poor

Probably the worst "organised" tour I've ever been with. Have travelled the world with 5 different tour companies and would have to say Vodkatrain is the worst organised, cheapest, nastiest and overpriced of any that I've experienced. Apart from on the trains, the accommodation was mediocre at best and terrible at worst, with the lowlight being a "hotel" in Mongolia with no hot (or at some stages even cold) running water, on the day prior to our 5 day train journey to Moscow. Some part were good; we were taken to some interesting places in Mongolia and I really enjoyed the Gur camp, however in China the support was minimal and in Russia there was only a half-day guided tour of Moscow. Do it yourself if you have the confidence because you might as well for most of it (esp. the 7 days + of train travel) and if you need a guide, hire a local personal one. It would be cheaper and better than Vodkatrain.

I took the Vodkatrain trip in August 2009 at the beginning of a long trip away. I would thoroughly recommend the trip to anyone. It was exactly what I was after in terms of a pre booked trip. The 'Honchos' give you the advice and guidance you need, without being a tour group leader. There is no "be here at 6am or we leave" or "you must come with us the the shopping centre" They are more like local friends who know each area. They offer advice as to the more 'off the trail' travel locations. The girls (the honchos!) in Moscow were brilliant, took us to restaurants, red square, the kremlin, markets...but it was all what we decided we wanted to do as a group. If your particular group wanted to pub crawl all day, I am sure they would do that, but if you only wanted to see museums and theatres they would stick to that. When we came to board the train, they came aboard and got us to our correct cabin. They helped us throw all of the mongolian market traders boxes out into the hall (this is standard and expected!) The guide called enkh bataar (I think) in Mongolia was great too, looked after us and provided us with local knowledge and what to watch out for! The trip camping in the hills was amazing, and we rode wild horses (captured for riding in the summer) in a thunder storm. It was unreal! The guide in china helped us to our hotel, and to get money at the bank. Took us to many restaurants and bars, and shows us the night markets in beijing. They then arranged a great wall of china trip for us, and took us to a less popular area of the wall, which by my experience vs pictures is 100x more spectacular and not full of chinese tourists. (Remember how many people in china and there will always be an endless list of chinese people who want to see the great wall) Go to simatai! All in all a great trip, I felt like I was on my own, with a group of like minded people, but with a friend in every town.
