The Scenic Central America trip was okay but did not meet my expectations. The guide was not a guide at all but more a facilitator - she imparted no information or knowledge about each of the countries & their history or culture - not even basic information. She did however facilitate well the logistics of the trip. I found her to be be quite lacking in confidence & rather immature. I had a medical issue on the trip & she was excellent in dealing with it. She perhaps needs to make herself some dot points about what I would think eould be commonly asked questions instead of answering in a vague manner about things. On the town orientation walks she knew where coffee shops & banks were but as for the location of sights I'd like to see she was very vague. Accommodation was of a fsirly poor standard - there were some excellent places but these were outnumbered by poor facilities. I had bedbugs in at least 3 of the rooms which indicates the standard of the hotels & their cleanliness - Tucan need to review the hotels they use & their standards & cleanliness. Transportation was pretty average, some of the private minibuses have seen better days & are pretty cramped especially for longer travel days. I would suggest rather than the overnight bus to San Crostobal that you fly that sector as it is not a comfortable trip & little sleep is gained. Experiencing the locals bus is worthwhile but doing it multiple times is not necessary. Tucan need to be more upfront & honest in the pre-trip information about travel times as there were far too many long days in vehicles - either cut distances travelled & break up the journey or fly or use a better standard of private minibus.
Tucan Travel commented on this review
Hi Sharon, thank you for taking the time to leave feedback. Our Tour Leaders are chosen to lead the group during the duration of the tour, with local guides supporting during included and optional excursions. Tucan Travel supports local businesses as much as we can and stay in locally owned hotels, guesthouses and homestays wherever possible. Because of this, the accommodation we use can be quite variable on their quality. However, we always try and use accommodation that is clean and comfortable and near to the main sights. Our tours in Central America often have fairly large travel days due to the vast distances covered. We use the transport best suited to the region however we take feedback like this on board and are looking at ways to improve this aspect on this tour. Thank you again for leaving a detailed review and we wish you all the best on your future adventures!

Itenary was changed without eny notice. This made it to late to change plans and I came to Mexico just to pay the exit fee. I've could have joined in Belize instead. Having a option to upgrade for extra charge i a stupid idea! It only create problems. And this was alsothe first day of a new group. It set the tone for the rest of the leg. To little time in Antigua. You are not able to explore both the city and do a volcano hike. I think Flores and Rio Dulce was unnecessary. Several hotels operated with dollar menues but still gave back in local currency at a bad rate. Then you had to change money back again for the third time. Hotel Lauros (Copan) had a bad safetybox standard. Sometimes the did'nt put stuff in the safetybox but left the stuff in their main room and forgot about it. Could not find it after. Also Hotel Real de Leon put my stuff in reseption even if they had a safety box. But oher people got the safety box. You never knew who got the box and who did'nt. We could leave places earlier so we could spend more time on new place and have time to shop around for excursions. Prices in itenary are to low. Must add 10-15 dollar. You should have a system for pricing on group dinners. eg. $, $$ og $$$ I think Manual Antonio National Park is over selled in the itenary. I think Boca del Toro is not worth it. We missed a lot of time in Cloud Forest due to weather. Nothing to do about that but then we stopped one hour for lunch. So we only got 45 min. in the cloud forest!! We should have skipped lunch and bought snack instead. I mean people are on this trip because of the Cloud Forest, not the lunch!
