Beware of add-on fees. After asking multiple times about additional fees, I was greeted at the Kathmandhu airport with a surprise $20 tourist visa fee (above the Chinese embassy fee) and TibetVista tried to force me to pay a $150 single-supplement one week... Read more

Tibet Vista commented on this review
Dear Tamir: Thanks for your candid review. I was glad to hear that you had a great time in Tibet. Meanwhile, I felt sorry for what happened during your trip. Please allow me to clarify a few issues you had during your Kathmandu to Lhasa tour. a.A surprising $20 tourist visa fee Firstly, for all of our clients, we are dedicated to providing a transparent and tourist-friendly service. To that end, we offer free service for the application of Tibet Travel Permit, a vital travel document for Tibet entry. However, to enter Tibet from Nepal, you need both China Group Visa and Tibet Travel Permit. Apart from the China Group Visa fee charged by the Chinese Embassy in Nepal, the additional $20 visa service fee is for handling China Group Visa Application in Chinese Embassy in Nepal on your behalf and delivering the issued visa to your hotel. We never intended to hide the fact from our clients. You may check it in the tour contract or find it on our official page for getting China Group Visa and Tibet Permit from Nepal. I assumed it could be either our busy travel consultant forgot to mention about it or you might just skip this part in the tour contract. b.$150 Single room supplement The policy of the single room supplement is widely practiced in the tourism industry. For solo travelers, you may either choose to share a room with other travelers (with the same sex in most cases) or pay the single room supplement fee to have the whole room. It’s flexible. You may find such an item in our contract or on our official website for Kathmandu-Lhasa overland tour. As our client booked the small group tour, we would assume you accepted our arrangement for the allocation of hotel rooms. In reality, there are times when our tour operator couldn’t find a suitable traveler to share a room with your at the last minute (due to the opposite sex or you are the only one left). In this case, you are expected to shoulder the cost for the single room supplement. Admittedly, such rare cases do exits and quite unpredictable. Our team will discuss it and think of new ways to inform our clients in the first place and minimize the loss on your side. c.Poor hotel facilities and sanitation in Tibet Well, traveling in Tibet is a mixture of bitter and sweet experience. As you felt thrilled to the lofty Himalayan view, you have to put up with the dizziness due to the high altitude and endure the basic accommodation facilities, esp. in some remote parts of Tibet, like EBC, or Mt.Kailash, etc., largely because of extreme altitude and shortage of water. In fact, we do agree with you that some of the hotels in remote Tibet do need urgent cleaning and improvement of the facilities. However, we would like to remind you that Tibet is not a place for ultimate comfort. (except in Lhasa and Shigatse where you can enjoy 5-star luxury resort). Traveling in Tibet is like more like an adventure tour both physically and mentally. When you can enjoy the incredible sunrise of Mt.Everest as you get out of humble guesthouse of Rongbuk Monastery in the morning, come on who cares more about the filthy pit toilet and poor sanitation of the hotel. All your ordeal paid back. Meanwhile, every year our team will survey the different regions across Tibet and keep updating hotel choices to our clients, in a hope to offer the most comfortable and safe stay for you. As a traveler of our small group tour, there are chances to upgrade your hotel, if you need. Simply tell your travel consultants who will get it done for you. So the next time you visit Tibet, we suggest you play down your expectation for hotels, esp. in remote regions. and instead focus more on up-lifting experiences and spiritual discovery, you will see a different Tibet. Best Wishes Tibet Vista
