      3.5 - Good

Day 1: Reyykjavik: Hotel Check in and dinner. • Dinner was a seafood buffet – very good. • No introductions of fellow tourists Day 2: Bus ride to Grundarfjordur: • Long ride with very short stops for sightseeing and food. • Rode past Snaefellsjokull volcano. Spent a very short time in Arnarstapi. • Black pebble beach at Djupalonssandur was interesting • Dinner was adequate at the hotel in Stykkisholmer Day 3: Bus Ride to Akureyri: • Replica of Eiriksstaoir was entertaining but lighting was poor. • Mudded windows for most of the morning bus ride Day 4: Excursion to Godafoss and Myvatn: • Best day of the tour. • Beautiful waterfall and Myvatn lake area was great. • Very unique geological area. • Dimmuborgir was very interesting a geologically active • Did not see lava tubes or volcanic caves only mud pools and rock formations. • The Myvatn Baths were great. • Dinner in Akureyri. Day 5: Bus ride to Reykholt: • Another muddy bus ride • Didn’t see any deer ferns • Drove by some poet Snorri Sturluson’s house didn’t stop • The Barnafoss waterfalls were beautiful- short stay • Reykholt hotel was subpar • Dinner at was adequate, but not noteworthy Day6: Drive back to Reykjavik through National Park: • Rift Valley was interesting and scenic – short stay • Geysir was very interesting – short stay • Gullfoss waterfalls were spectacular – short stay Day 7: Bus Ride to the South Shore: • Seljaandsfoss waterfall were interesting – short stay • Skogafoss waterfalls were a drive by • Skogar Folk Museum was interesting – short stay • Vik black-basalt beach was pretty – short stay • No puffins – they had migrated weeks before • Solheimajokull Glacier was interesting – good photo ops • Eyrarbakki was a drive through Day 8: Fly home Summary: • We are very experienced travelers – mostly ocean cruises with excursions – land tours with Tauck and CIE. • Too much time on bus and not enough time at sites • Not enough photo opportunity stops • No introductions at beginning of trip. • No name tags • Bus was very good and comfortable • Bus Driver and Guide took shortcuts down muddy roads, and then we could not see out the bus windows for hours at a time. • Tour guide had to read most of the facts about the sites. He did not seem well informed. • We did not follow the route advertised in the trip guide – we backtracked down the same roads for many km. • Site stops and lunches were at gas stations in most locations • Tour Guide had a very poor command of English language – we could not understand him most of the time. • Fire alarms went off twice at one hotel – fire trucks did not roll - unsafe • Hotels were subpar at all locations by our standards – our highest rating would be a 2 at the most for the best one. • Rooms were quite small in all hotels. • Bathroom showers were very unusual – prepare to have the whole bathroom floor get soaked when showering. • Phone service at some hotels was iffy. One hotel had no phones! • Meals provided were adequate, but not all meals were covered during the trip. • No going-away dinner • Prices were very high compared to other countries. Iceland tourism is probably decreasing due to their high prices. Many food items are produced locally (fish, lamb, beef, root vegetables). • VAT tax is high (11% on food and 24% on other items) • Not enough value for the money • Based on our experience with Cosmos, I would not recommend this tour. I would be very reluctant to use Globus as a tour provider also since Cosmos is owned and operated by Globus.
