Questions & Answers

Here we have collected and answered the most frequently asked questions about this tour.

    • When is the best time of the year to take this tour?

This tour only runs at optimal times during the year to ensure that the skies are dark enough to see the lights to their full effect. September and October are the months we would recommend to anybody who prefers to avoid the extreme cold of an Arctic winter. November and December are very much a time of change in the Arctic and heralds the arrival of the first major snows of the winter. The snow does bring quite a bit of cloud cover but the shorter days also bring darker skies which increases the amount of time during which the Aurora might be visible. January to March are probably the three most popular months for Aurora hunting because they bring long dark nights and plenty of snow to play in during the daylight hours while you wait for darkness to fall!

    • Why is the success rate so high in North Iceland?

There are several factors that affect the visibility of the Northern Lights. The biggest factor is of course the activity of the Northern Lights themselves. The past years the Northern Lights have generally been very active over Iceland, and mostly cloud coverage and weather been a big factor in visibility. Due to geographical and meteorological circumstances in Eyjafjordur Fjord area, there have been few days were the sky is completely blocked, our guides can usually find a clear sky somewhere in the area. Our guides are also very experienced Northern Lights hunters, most of them have been working with Saga Travel from the start.

    • How do I get to Akureyri in North Iceland?

Akureyri is located in Eyjafjordur Fjord, around 400 km drive from Reykjavík City. There are several ways to get to Akureyri. Firstly there is an international Airport located in the town, offering both domestic flights from Reykjavik Domestic Airport, and direct connection flights from the KEF Intl Airport. A local bus company offers as well scheduled transport between Reykjavik and Akureyri.
