13 Day Eastern Europe Itinerary, incl. Budapest and Split
A 13-day adventure through 3 countries unfolds with extended stays for deeper cultural immersion. The itinerary features 2 nights in Budapest, 3 in Ljubljana with Lake Bled excursion, a Zagreb visit, 3 nights at Plitvice Lakes, and 3 nights in coastal Split.
- Days 1-2
Budapest, Hungary
Start in the Jewish Quarter to see the incredible street art. Get to the Széchenyi Baths around 9 AM on day two to avoid crowds and find a locker easily. You'll find 18 pools here, with the outdoor thermal baths being the most popular spot. Take the No. 16 bus to Castle Hill later in the day and visit Fisherman's Bastion at sunset for perfect photos of Parliament across the Danube.
- Days 3-5
Ljubljana, Slovenia
Take the morning train from Budapest. It's an 8-hour ride, so bring plenty of snacks since the dining car isn't always reliable. Stay in the Old Town where you can walk to everything. One traveler shared: "Ljubljana's riverfront comes alive at sunset, with locals and tourists mingling at the outdoor cafes along the embankment." Make sure to visit Lake Bled early before the tour buses arrive. Rent a traditional pletna boat to row to the island church and bring water shoes if you want to swim in the clear lake.
- Day 6
Zagreb, Croatia
- Days 7-9
Plitvice Lakes
Take the 2.5-hour bus ride from Zagreb. Get to Plitvice National Park early since the wooden walkways get busy after 10 AM. Wear shoes with good grip because the boardwalks can get slippery. Try Route C to see the best waterfalls while avoiding the biggest crowds. The upper lakes are usually quieter than the lower section.
- Days 10-13
Split
The bus journey from Plitvice takes 4 hours through beautiful mountain landscapes. Book accommodation near Diocletian's Palace for easy access to both the old town and ferry port. Don't miss the day trip to Krka National Park. Unlike Plitvice, you can swim near the waterfalls here. A recent visitor noted: "The walk down to Krka's main waterfall is steep but the swimming area at the bottom is incredible. Go before 11 AM when tour groups arrive." Walk along Split's Riva promenade in the morning before the crowds arrive. For a memorable last sunset, climb Marjan Hill. It takes about 30 minutes up the stairs but offers amazing views over Split and the islands. Book your departure flight for the afternoon since morning traffic to Split's airport can be heavy in summer.
- Days 1-2
Budapest, Hungary
Begin your trip in Budapest by exploring the Castle District and Heroes' Square on foot. Sign up for a Danube cruise in the evening ($25) to view the lit-up Parliament building. The 7:30 PM sailing offers the best views. Visit the Széchenyi Thermal Baths early on day two right when they open at 6 AM to avoid the crowds. Pick up a Budapest Card ($40) for public transport access and entry to many attractions.
- Days 3-4
Serbia (Novi Sad & Belgrade)
Travel 5 hours to Serbia's Vojvodina region. Visit Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad before moving on to Belgrade. Spend your next day walking through Belgrade's historic center from Knez Mihailova Street to Kalemegdan Fortress. End your day in Skadarlija, the bohemian district where local kafanas serve traditional Serbian food.
- Days 5-6
Zagreb & Ljubljana
Take a 4-hour trip to Zagreb to see the Upper Town and St. Mark's Church with its distinctive tiled roof. Travel onward to Ljubljana (2.5 hours) to stay the night. Plan a morning visit to Lake Bled the next day. Get there by 9 AM before the tour buses arrive. A pletna boat ride to Bled Island costs around $20.
- Days 7-9
Slovenian & Croatian Istria
- Day 10
Plitvice Lakes National Park
- Days 11-13
Split & Hvar

- Days 1-2
Hungary's Capital and Lake Balaton Region
- Days 3-4
Northern Croatian Castles
- Days 5-6
Zagreb and Surroundings
Visit Medvedgrad fortress above Zagreb. The path can get slippery, so wear good shoes. Spend the next day in Zagreb's historic upper town. A recent visitor shared: "The Museum of Broken Relationships in Zagreb's upper town is fascinating and much less crowded in the morning hours. Don't miss the cannon firing at noon from the Lotrščak Tower."
