Ecoteer Responsible Travel started in 2010 through the growing need for more support for the projects based in Asia associated with Ecoteer.com and the creation of the Turtle & Community project on the Perhentian Islands. Some of the grass root projects on Ecoteer.com were unable either to financially support themselves or lacked the man power. They sought Ecoteer’s help to continue or improve their work. Ecoteer Responsible Travel was then formed to help concentrate resources to develop meaningful volunteer and ecotourism experiences which could help solve the specific issues for each project. In 2012 Fuze Ecoteer was established, a parntership of Fuze Outdoor Consultants and Ecoteer Responsible Travel. Our unique combination of team building and real conservation / community work is a new concept in Malaysia, bringing much greater meaning to your activities with us. We started Fuze -Ecoteer because we want to work outdoors, bring people closer together, involve people in conservation and community issues, and because we want to make the world a better place. Come along and be part of the journey! Aim To provide tourism experiences that bring the most possible benefits to the host communities and the environment which surrounds them. Mission Fuze Ecoteer seeks to bring together sustainable local community projects and travelers; in the hope of a greater and better future. Through providing travelers with the opportunity to learn and experience ‘real world issues, they will be made more socially aware about living responsibly and in turn teaching others how to reduce their footprint on our planet. This experience will in hope, turn into a lifestyle change which will benefit the world we live in. This coming together of people from all walks of life, race and religion for local projects is in essence what makes Fuze Ecoteer. Responsible Tourism As our name suggest we are a Responsible Travel Company, or at least a travel company that aspires to be as responsible as possible. Responsible Tourism to us means that we look after the environment, people, culture, our staff, our accounts and of course our tourists. In general being Responsible means we provide as many benefits as possible to all parties. We know we are not the best in responsible tourism, at the moment, and we will never reach being 100% responsible but if you reach for the stars and land on the moon the view is not so bad. We have decided to adopt the United Nation’s World Tourism Organisation’s GLOBAL SUSTAINABLE TOURISM CRITERIA, which provides a holistic framework for responsible tourism (see http://www.sustainabletourismcriteria.org/). The checklists the UN have created will be used as the tool to help us measure our improvements, highlight areas where improvement is needed and to communicate our efforts to travellers and relevant communities. The checklists will be updated every year and uploaded here for all to see. December 2011 History Ecoteer was founded in 2005 by Daniel Quilter, a marine biologist, after a volunteering experience at Sukau in Sabah, Borneo. On his return from a 8-months placement, Daniel decided to start Ecoteer.com to provide a platform for people interested in long term voluntourism globally. Ecoteer.com has since boomed and is a favourite amongst students and career breakers looking for long term volunteering experiences with a focus on environmental awareness and conservation. The Ecoteer.com website supports over 200 independently-run grass root organisations in over 50 countries and by 2011 Ecoteer had over 1,500 subscribing members. Ecoteer.com has been covered in various UK and global media including Daily Telegraph, Sunday Times, Daily Mirror, The Gulf News and has been included in a report by Al Jazeera. Daniel moved back to Malaysia in 2008 to work on a sea turtle conservation project on the Perhentian Islands, Malaysia. This project has since developed into a full-fledged environmental and community programme led by a team of Ecoteer Village People based at the Ecoteer House. Today Ecoteer Responsible Travel are helping various other projects in Asia and offers voluntourism and ecotourism experiences in Asia.
