--smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1024\/683;\" \/><figcaption>Blue-footed booby, Bachas Beach, and a sally lightfoot crab | \u00a9 Ashley Nitransky<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At the beginning of February, I took a once-in-a-lifetime trip to these enchanted isles with G Adventures, a pioneer of responsible and sustainable travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, roughly ten weeks later, my present-day reality couldn\u2019t be more different from the time I spent in Ecuador \u2014 those days filled with seemingly endless adventure and spontaneity and sunshine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As I continue to adjust to this new life of isolation and social distancing, I\u2019m struggling to believe that two months ago, I was walking on a blindingly white-sand beach littered with sea lions; height: 2px; border: 0; background-color: #222; margin-left: 0; opacity: 1\" ><\/div>\n\n\n<p>When I look back through my Galapagos photos, those feelings of elation and wonderment \u2014 those feelings that stayed with me for the entirety of my trip \u2014 come rushing right back. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I remember the euphoria I felt stepping off the plane in Baltra, a small, centrally-located island and gateway to the Galapagos. Yes, I already make an effort to travel sustainably, but being in the Galapagos inspired me to take a long, hard look at my travel habits, and underscored the fact that I can do better. I want to do better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much like the Galapagos caused me to reassess my own travel habits, the COVID-19 pandemic is forcing us all to consider our role in this global climate crisis we\u2019re facing. With quarantine measures in place, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utoronto.ca\/news\/air-quality-improves-40-cent-cities-took-action-covid-19-u-t-researcher-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">air quality has improved drastically<\/a> across major cities like Delhi, Tokyo, and Shanghai. It feels strange to celebrate a day dedicated to Mother Nature from the confines of my apartment, but I\u2019m grateful for the time to reflect and contemplate everything that\u2019s at stake in our fight for a greener future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As I rally together with thousands of other people online to mark <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthday.org\/earth-day-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Earth Day 2020<\/a>, I\u2019ll be thinking of the Galapagos Islands.
