Although it\u2019s been nearly a decade since I set off on my first solo trip, I still find myself answering the same tiresome questions whenever I travel alone:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWho are you travelling with?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAre you sure it\u2019s safe?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat if something bad happens?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Listen, I get it: most people are concerned or downright baffled by the notion that a woman would willingly choose to head out into the big, bad world all by her lonesome, but after ten years of repeating the same<\/em> answers to the same<\/em> questions, I\u2019ll be the first to admit: it\u2019s starting to get really old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More and more women are choosing to gallivant around the globe alone, but until the day comes when we can stop having the same monotonous conversations about solo female travel, here are seven questions I don\u2019t ever want to hear again (along with my ever-so-slightly snarky answers for each). <\/p>\n\n\n

1. \u201cWhen are you going to stop travelling and settle down?\u201d <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Let me guess \u2014 what you\u2019re really wanting to say is: Why don\u2019t you have a husband, a house with a white picket fence, and 2.5 kids, <\/em>right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newsflash: I don\u2019t want to \u201csettle down\u201d \u2014 I don\u2019t want to settle for anything, actually. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, I want to have some semblance of stability and a place to call home, but I also want adventure and spontaneity and the freedom to travel as often as I please.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe one day I\u2019ll get married and buy a house, but the American Dream isn\u2019t my <\/em>dream.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. \u201cYou shouldn\u2019t travel to [insert country] right now. It\u2019s not safe.\u201d <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Turkey, India, Bosnia, France \u2014 I\u2019ve lost count of all the times someone told me not to travel to that <\/em>country because \u201cit\u2019s not safe right now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I realise these types of comments come from a place of genuine concern, but \u2014 more often than not \u2014 they\u2019re also rooted in ignorance and misinformation.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unless you\u2019ve recently travelled to the country in question or you\u2019re getting your information from somewhere other than a ten-second clip on CNN, I\u2019m going to take your \u201cadvice\u201d with a massive grain of salt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. \u201cYou\u2019re so brave.\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Why is it that a woman travelling alone is automatically labelled as \u201cbrave\u201d? Are people going around telling men they\u2019re brave for travelling solo? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reality is this: I\u2019m not brave for travelling the world on my own \u2014 I\u2019m brave for choosing to step out of my comfort zone, challenge societal expectations, and act on that innate longing to see the world, despite feeling fearful at the thought of it all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. \u201cWhy would you go there<\/em>?\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When I announced my upcoming travel plans to India<\/a> back in 2015, one of my friends replied with: \u201cIndia? Why don\u2019t you go somewhere like Italy<\/a> instead?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSomewhere like Italy\u201d \u2014 what\u2019s that supposed to mean, exactly? Somewhere that\u2019s \u201csafe\u201d? Somewhere you\u2019d<\/em> feel comfortable travelling? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thank you kindly for your utterly useless suggestion. I booked a trip to India because \u2014 shocker! \u2014 I want to go to India.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. \u201cIsn\u2019t it dangerous for women to travel on their own?\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The short answer is no. Despite what the fear-mongering media would have us believe, I\u2019m a firm believer that, with the appropriate planning, preparation, and precautions, it\u2019s safe for women to travel solo just about anywhere in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bad things can happen anywhere and everywhere \u2014 \u201csafe\u201d countries and your hometown included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. \u201cAren\u2019t you scared of being robbed\/attacked\/assaulted?\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As a matter of fact, yes, I\u2019m afraid of all of those scenarios. It\u2019s something that\u2019s on my mind all the time as a woman \u2014 not just when I travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It doesn\u2019t matter if I\u2019m walking down the street in Quito or London, Bangkok or at home in Toronto, I\u2019m always hyper-aware of my surroundings and on the lookout for any potential threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I always take the necessary precautions and prioritise my safety on the road, but I will never let fear stop me from travelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. \u201cWhy are you travelling alone?\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ah yes, this one might just be my favourite question of all (please note the sarcasm), because no matter how you answer, you just can\u2019t win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Travelling solo as a single woman? Then you must be a friendless spinster who\u2019s running away from the real world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Travelling solo while in a relationship? There must be trouble in paradise \u2014 why else would your boyfriend\/husband let you<\/em> travel alone?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Believe it or not, when women travel on their own, it\u2019s not because they didn\u2019t have someone to go with, or because their boyfriend was too busy working \u2014 it\u2019s because \u2014 wait for it \u2014 some of us actually enjoy the freedom and liberation that comes with a solo trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
