If you\u2019re thinking of visiting the Maritimes make sure that Halifax, Nova Scotia is at the top of your list. There’s no debating that Halifax is a small city with a big heart. To get your\u00a0bucket list started, I’ve put together the top five things you can do in this oceanside town.<\/span><\/p>\n

1. The Night Life<\/h1>\n

Halifax is home to more pubs per capita than any other city in Canada! You can enjoy the traditional east coast experience at The Lower Deck down on the boardwalk, relax on any number of patios on Argyle Street, enjoy late night entertainment at The Seahorse, or enjoy a cold beer at the Stillwell Beer Garden on Spring Garden \u2013 a personal favourite as it\u2019s dog friendly!<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Fill Yer Boots (My Food Favourites)<\/h1>\n

The East Coast is known for some of our traditional dishes \u2013 like the lobster roll, chowder, and fish and chips. But we have so much more to offer! From enjoying handmade chocolates (using local ingredients) by Rouseau Chocolatier on Hollis Street, to enjoying the season\u2019s local flavours from Two Doors Down on Barrington Street, not to mention local breakfast hotspot, Coastal Cafe on Robie street, you’ll never go hungry in Halifax. I can personally recommend that you head over and enjoy the fantastic view of the Commons (also a local favourite) from Season\u2019s by Atlantica Restaurant and Lounge.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Oot n’ Aboot<\/h1>\n

Summer in Halifax is a must see. The city is abuzz with festivals, markets, and seasonal activities. Our world famous Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo kicks off the summer running from June 30<\/span>th to\u00a0<\/span>July 7<\/span>th<\/span> followed by the Halifax Jazz Festival from July 12<\/span>th to\u00a0<\/span>July 17<\/span>th<\/span>, Halifax Pride Festival from July 14<\/span>th to\u00a0<\/span>24<\/span>th<\/span>, and the Buskers July 27<\/span>th<\/span> through August 1<\/span>st<\/span>. More boutique festivals and events are popping up every year like the Gridlock Music Festival from July 8<\/span>th to\u00a0<\/span>10<\/span>th<\/span> featuring bands like Wintersleep and Wolf Parade and the Food Truck Parties that are held a few times each summer. If it\u2019s a rainy day, don\u2019t fret, Halifax averages 156 days of rain a year so there are many options rain or shine. Visit the Halifax Central Library to enjoy concerts and a rooftop patio or the Seaport Market for local products.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Day Trippin’<\/h1>\n

If you\u2019re in the mood to get out of the city, Halifax is close to many perfect day trips. There are more than five oceanfront beaches within 45 minutes of Halifax\u2019s downtown. If you like hiking you can visit Prospect or Duncan Cove for an amazing view of the ocean. One of my favourite drives is down the South Shore of Nova Scotia, and within an hour you can visit the sailing hub of Chester (check out the Kiwi Cafe for a delicious bite to eat), look for treasure on Oak Island (tours are only offered a couple times a summer), and even head down to Lunenburg where you can see and take a sail on the Bluenose II when it\u2019s in port.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. Best for Last<\/h1>\n

Finally my favourite thing about Halifax is…Dartmouth, the best kept secret across the harbour from Halifax. You can enjoy a ferry ride over and explore downtown Dartmouth. Make sure you visit Two If By Sea cafe for a delicious coffee and croissant unlike any croissant you\u2019ve ever had. Battery Park is a great place to stop in for a pint or swing by the Celtic Corner for the Irish pub experience. If you want a light snack then I would recommend the Portland Street Creperie \u2013 the Bon Matin is my personal favourite. <\/span><\/p>\n

No matter where you choose to eat or what you choose to do, Halifax will welcome you brightly! See you soon!<\/span><\/p>\n
