Egypt<\/a> has long been a popular bucket-list trip for many travellers<\/g>, known for its history, mystery, and<\/g> majesty. But besides being one of the best budget travel destinations in the world, this Mediterranean country is also filled with unbelievably unique things to do. So if you\u2019re contemplating a trip to Egypt, here are ten things you should know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Egypt is a year-round destination, but the best weather is in spring<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The weather is typically hot and sunny throughout the year, but visiting between fall and spring offers a nice break from near 40-degree heat during the summer. Keep in mind that December and January are considered peak tourist season, so many of Egypt\u2019s iconic sites can get pretty crowded. Instead, travelling<\/g> during the spring offers pleasant weather, plus many of the major attractions should still be fairly quiet. Just remember that many of Egypt\u2019s ancient sites are located in desert regions, so wear plenty of sunscreen<\/g> and pack a pair of good sunglasses no matter when you go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. It\u2019s safe to travel solo, but joining a tour may be better<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Despite any worries you may have, Egypt is absolutely safe to visit alone. However, when it comes to travelling<\/g> in unpredictable destinations, joining a tour offers both the independence of free time to yourself and also the security of fellow travellers<\/g> nearby, with an entire company overseeing your trip. But even then, you should always read up and take the right precautions. Do your research, pack accordingly, and remember to be considerate of local customs\u2014especially when it comes to clothing.

3. A local guide is the best way to get around<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

4. Tipping is expected everywhere and for everything<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Egyptian word for \u201ctip\u201d is \u201cbaksheesh,” something you\u2019ll definitely hear more than once. Expect to hear \u201cbaksheesh\u201d from anyone and everyone who offers you a service: including waiters, washroom attendants, drivers, housekeeping, etc. The average tip is between 10 and 15% for most services, so keeping small bills will come in handy\u2014especially for unexpected asks<\/g> such as paying for pictures. Note that you\u2019ll probably have to pay a small fee for taking pictures at every monument, temple, and<\/g> tomb, or even just for carrying your camera around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. The Pyramids of Giza are the only Wonder of the World still standing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Pyramids of Giza, which you\u2019ll visit on Day 5, are without a doubt Egypt\u2019s best-known tourist attraction\u2014for good reason. Erected over 4000 years ago, the pyramids were built as a tribute to the heavens and gods for safe passage into the afterlife. Constructed from over 2.5 million limestone blocks, they\u2019ve truly withstood the test of time. Despite<\/g> there being only one original Ancient Wonder of the World left, the original site of The Lighthouse of Alexandria is now home to the Citadel of Qaitbey, which you\u2019ll stroll through on Day 2 of this tour.

6. The Sphinx is one of the world\u2019s largest and oldest sculptures<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Located just southeast of the pyramids, the Great Sphinx of Giza is a monumental statue built using a single piece of limestone in approximately 2500 BC. It is one of the largest sculptures in the world that you\u2019ll get to visit on Day 5, measuring over 240 feet long and 66 feet high. A prominent mythological figure, the sphinx represents a sort of spiritual guardian with the body of a lion and head of a human. There are still many questions surrounding the Great Sphinx\u2019s origin, but one thing\u2019s for sure\u2014it is one of the most recognizable relics in ancient Egyptian history.

7. No visit to Cairo is complete without a trip to Khan El-Khalili <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Discover historic cafes, antique trinkets, and an abundance of unique, handmade accessories in the city\u2019s largest souk. Located in the heart of the Cairo, Khan Eel-Khalili market is said to be one of the largest open-air markets in the Middle East, and is a must-see. Step back in time and get lost marvelling at the city\u2019s ancient glory during your free time on Day 4. You\u2019ll also be steps away from Muizz Street, home to the greatest concentration of medieval Islamic architectural treasures. And because Khan El-Khalili is so well known, it won\u2019t be hard to find on public transit or by car. If you\u2019re taking the metro, head towards Ataba Station and you\u2019re nearly there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. The Philae Temples can only be reached by boat <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Because of its name, you might think this ancient Egyptian temple complex is located on Philae Island\u2014historically, this may be true, but technically, it isn\u2019t. In the 1960s, UNESCO rescued the main temple\u2014the Temple of Isis\u2014from rising waters and transferred it block-by-block from the now submerged Philae Island to Agilika Island, which you\u2019ll visit on Day 6. Originally built to honour<\/g> the goddess Isis, The Temple of Isis is an extraordinary reminder of her legend. Despite the fact that the Philae Temples can only be reached by boat, it makes for a spectacular view from the water.

9. The best way to experience the Nile is on a felucca<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cruising down the Nile is arguably the most quintessential bucket-list activity in Egypt. Enjoy a leisurely sail through history and travel the Nile the same way the pharaohs and Cleopatra did centuries ago\u2014on a felucca. A traditional wooden sailboat, the felucca has remained the primary mode of transportation to experience the Nile. During Days 7 & 8, you\u2019ll have the chance to board a felucca for a two-night voyage downstream. Relax, go for a swim or chill out and let your troubles melt away under the Egyptian sun.

10. The Valley of the Kings is home to King Tut\u2019s tomb<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The most famed collection of Egypt\u2019s underground tombs lies on the Nile\u2019s west bank near Luxor. The Valley of the Kings, which you\u2019ll visit on Day 10, was part of the ancient city of Thebes and the burial site of nearly all the kings in the 18th, 19th, and 20th dynasties\u2014including King Tuthankhamun<\/g>. He ruled Egypt as a pharaoh for 10 years, taking the throne at age nine, until his death at age 19 around 1324 B.C. During his mummification, an incredible 24-pound solid gold mask was placed over his head and shoulders. This very mask is now on display at the renowned Egyptian Museum, which you\u2019ll get the chance visit on Day 11.
