I choose Stray because I travelled alone and its a good way to travel easy to the highlights of new-zealand with other backpackers. Most Straydrivers where very nice and told a lot about the things/places you passed on the road. It was nice That Stray garanteed the first night of accomodation, but if you want to stay more nights for Some places you definitely have to book in advance, so dont forget this! Because of the full places in the bus and That you had to book your accomodation in advance you have to plan your trip. So less spontanious actions if you want to stay longer in a place at That moment. Because I hopped off a lot, I had all the time a new bus who already new each other. That makes it harder to make new friends. The friends who I maked where gone after a couple of days. That was a shame. Stray is a Good way to travel is you want to travel easy, if you are alone and want to travel with other people, if you dont want to organise everything like activities and if you want to travel with a guide (straydrivers can tell a lot!).

Had an amazing time travelling around New Zealand for two months with Stray! It's a really great way to meet loads of people, especially if you're travelling on your own. Plus it's a great way to see and stay at some different places as well as the big tourist attractions. The drivers really know what they're doing and will book your accommodation and activities as you go. I would recommend getting a bit organised and booking buses in advance as some sections of the trip get busy, or the buses only depart on certain days, plus if you're hopping off for longer you need to book your own accommodation (in summer it's not always easy to be as spontaneous as they advertise!). The online booking system generally works quite well but I found it easier to call the office, as the staff are really helpful. Overall really glad I booked with Stray!

Awesome, awesome, awesome! I didn't have any expectations at first because I didn't know what was going to expect me. So I thought I'd let myself be surprised every day. I started in Auckland going south and the travel group and the bus driver, Nipper, made the whole journey an unbelievable experience. I wanted to get of the bus in Rotorua but I ended up doing both islands in less than a month just because I wanted to stay on the bus with the same people. And I wasn't disappointed. It's was the best trip that I had so far and I recommend buying a bus ticket for Stray for every backpacker or traveller that comes to New Zealand. It's totally worth it and you'll have an amazing time. After my travels in New Zealand I went to Australia and met a friend there that wanted to go to New Zealand as well. He didn't know how to get around there so I told him to travel with Stray. Guess what, he did it and he was happy that I told him to buy the ticket.

Everywhere Pass. 'unlimited travel for 12 months' Jinx - amazing guide, bent over backwards and always seemed willing to help. Moose - Took him about 10 minutes to get out 1 sentence. Always late arriving to places. Pixie - Rude and very unhelpful. 'unlimited travel for 12 months' - turns out, once you've done a route, you can only book the same again by ringing up; even then you're put on a waiting list and not guaranteed a place. During peak season, this is problematic when sorting out accomodation. 'hop on, hop off' - Absolutely not, especially during peak season (even if you're super organised) There were hidden extra costs (baring in mind, I'd already paid the equivilent of £800 for the pass) So far, only done the North island. Didn't complete it with Stray (left the bus in Taupo) because they're so useless. Made my own way down to Wellington. Much easier on manabus. Only had WiFi on one bus so far. Stops during journeys - 15 minutes is not enough time to see sights, very rushed. It doesn't take a genius to work out that, in peak season, you need to put more buses on. One positive - if you're travelling on your own and are only in NZ for the short-term, I imagine it to be quite good travelling with the fixed dates that Stray gives. All-in-all: For long-term and 'unlimited travel' it is a shambles. Stray is not what they advertise as; most of it is false.
Stray Travel commented on this review
Hello, I am very sorry to hear that you've been disappointed with your trip. It definitely does not sound like the service Stray strives to give its customers. We endeavour to make it clear that when re-travelling (using the 'unlimited travel' feature), priority seating is given to first time travellers, but if you have suggestions on where we can make that more obvious, we would appreciate the feedback. I'm also quite surprised by your reviews of Moose and Pixie. Would you mind sending an email with more details about your experience to catrin@straytravel.co.nz so we can improve where needed? Many thanks, Lisa

I spent 7 weeks traveling with Stray and can honestly say I had a brilliant time! Loved the locations, the guides, the group atmosphere & flexibility of travel time! Saw all the main places but also some amazing, less well known spots. The Stray stops (Blue Duck Station, Gunn's Camp, Lake Aniwhenua) were some of my favourite parts of NZ. The drivers (I hopped off a lot so had many different drivers) were very motivated and got us to do some of the smaller walks, i.e. when some people were too lazy to get out of the bus at some places, they found ways to motivate everyone and it was always worth it! I particularly liked the drivers Lego, Weeman and Pacman! They knew what backpackers wanted to spend their money on and gave us great advice on the best local places to eat, things to see and also (very important) played great music on the bus. We also had many fun nights out with them and the group! I also enjoyed the fact that it didn't feel too much like a tour, more like a big road trip, each driver had different habits and daily routines surrounding the actual 'sightseeing'. The drivers really know the country well and also showed us as much as they could, even when the weather wasn't great. Also, as the drivers book you into hostels and onto any activities, you don't have to worry about forgetting to do things. While the whole idea of hopping off and on again whenever you like is great and means you can be spontaneous, the online booking system is somewhat complicated and I would recommend to plan ahead if possible, where you would like to hop off, or, if you want to have complete flexibility, try to travel outside of popular traveling season as the buses won't be so full then. This may all be a bit scatterbrained, but all in all I would absolutely recommend traveling with stray, especially if you are thinking about doing NZ by yourself or even with just one other friend. Makes the whole experience 10 times better to have someone who knows the places show you around and a group of people to spend free time with!

It's perfect for traveling: you get everywhere, you don't need to care where to go and you gonna meet loads of other travellers. That's the best I'd say. Meeting so many people from all over the planet. My main driver was Nipper who managed it to be a great bus driver by connecting to the group and by transforming the single travellers on the bus into a big cool group. Another important thing is the freedom to hop of and on whenever you want - and: whereever. If you plan your own trip its great just as an use of transport. Stray helped me to meet so many people and that was for me really important and made my trip much better!
