My time with Bamboo was everything I expected AND more!! We started off in Bangkok which was a fun way to get to know the people and guides of my group. Surin was a whole different story though, I fell in love with the city big time. After a couple of days in Bangkok, we made our way to Surin which was about 7-8 hours away on a train/bus. The work we did in the village was strenuous on some considering the fact that we worked in humidity as well, but it wasn't impossible to get through. Plus, it was definitely worth our time we got with the elephants. It was unreal being so up-close and personal with them. The happiness and joy you see in them as soon as they get in the water is amazing and something I will never forget. We had a lot of free time which was cool too. We had meals prepared for us everyday (which was delicious by the way). The homestay was great and the family we stayed with was so kind and welcoming - everyone in Surin was actually!! The language barrier sucked because as much as I wanted to communicate with all the locals, all we could really say is hi, goodbye, and thank you. I guess study up on your thai before you go, that's something I wish I did! The memories will last forever. I cannot wait to go back. Thank you Heidi, Ae, Doo, TT, Gun, and Noom for an unforgettable experience!!!

You work up close and personal with elephants and meeting their needs. We go to work most days to cut and haul bamboo, haul water by hand to water the crops, spread fertilizer by hand and hoe the ground. On occasion you will pick up old bamboo and elephant ding and haul it away. It is very hot and humid here and labor intensive during those times in the field. You need to be able to walk long distances and haul at least 20 lbs of weight. The elephants are very majestic and graceful. You walk them several times during your stay about 20 min away to a river and get in and bathe them. There are fans, bug nets and water provided in the village. You sleep on a thin mat on the floor if you need more for your comfort bring it with you. Between time in the village you are in a guest house with running water for shows and dishes. You must buy your own water and pay to wash then hang dry your clothes. A regular bed is available and a kitchen is there to cook with cooking and eating stuff provided. The local food store has pretty much most things you need, but don't forget to pick up extra water, toilet paper and paper towels as these are not provided at the house. You can exchange money and use atm at that store, the store also takes cards. Resturants, drivers and suveniers all are paid by cash. I found a few hundred us dollars to be sufficient. You need to set aside money for you transportation on the weekend and for you final return as this is not included, but they help you set up. Example: 1000 baht to leave program early and go back to surin, 700 baht to ride over night train from surin to Bangkok to get to airport, taxi is about 400-600 baht from train station to bkk airport, typical tuk tuk (open cab taxi on a motor bike fits up to 4 no luggage) 120 to 150 baht each way and they call to make arrangements via facebook group chat and usually takes 15-30 max for you ride to arrive after you ask.

I had a great time on my trip! The guides were fun and helpful which is important to any volunteer experience. I also really enjoyed a lot of the activities. The Bangkok tour was also cool because I found that city overwhelming and being shown around was awesome, especially with someone who was so informed. At the actual village, I found the work difficult but still enjoyed myself. One complaint I do have is maybe making the activities of the day longer, I felt like I sat around a bit to much to truly be helping the community. Also, on your website it said during the elephant village program you would also be helping with other projects that don't have to do with elephants and I was looking forward to that but unfortunately didn't get to do any of that. My last complaint is minor and an easy fix, I often felt like I didn't know what was going on and the guides seemed a little unorganized. But other than that it was the experience of a lifetime and I'm so glad I did it!!

I had such an amazing time working for Bamboo! The highlight of my time spent in Surin was not only interacting with the elephants, but the staff and people I met! Ae especially was such a joy to work with and made every day in the village special. She's an amazing person and now friend who inspired me to help others. The program was such an incredible experience and I would definitely recommend to others !

From the moment getting off the plane everything was well organized, I was hesitant at first and didn't know what I was getting myself into. The staff took well care of us throughout the entire program and made sure they were always there to help. The program itself could use a little improvement in the teaching structure, but with improvement it will be top notch in no time. Overall, the greatest three weeks! Very life changing!

My experience with bamboo most-definitely reached much farther than my original expectations. Yes, I knew that I was going to have the trip of a lifetime, but I did not know that I would meet the most genuine and wonderful people that I have met in my lifetime. The friends that I made while residing in the elephant village in Surin, left an imprint on my heart that will impact the rest of my life, never have I known such love from people outside of my family. I think of Ae, Pahn, Heidi, May, Gun, Cha Cha, and everyone else I met every day, which keeps them close to my heart. I hope that everyone gets a chance to have an experience on par with the stupendous time that I had in Thailand. I plan on living there part time, if that gives you a clue to how much my boyfriend and I adored it. I am currently going to university for nursing, and hope to apply to bamboo in the future.

My volunteering experience in the Elephant Village was the best 4 weeks of my life, and Ae was a HUGE part of making it so amazing. From the moment we met she made me feel at ease, welcome and excited about being in thailand. She is funny, cheeky and extremely kind and I could not recommend her enough as a tour guide. With her personality she is bound to become your friend! Her english, while not perfect, is improving everyday and she really makes an effort to have a conversation with you regardless of the language barrier. I not only had a great tour guide, but I made a friend for life, and I hope that many more people in the future get to meet Ae when they volunteer!

Bamboo and its employees are incredible! I went with my mother a year go on this trip and it was, to be honest, rather intimidating being in such a foreign world. The bamboo employees made us feel right at home when we got there, and were more then accommodating when we needed assistance. Highly recommend touring with them.
