Toby "Traveling to Laos with GIVE was the best thing I could have done this summer. It truly was, if not life-changing, eye-opening to what I can achieve if I choose to. It gave me the opportunity to do something worthwhile for, and with, the people of Laos, and learn more about the country, and myself. The guides and interns were amazing, coping tremendously with everything that came their way. Carly S..."

Not a day goes by where I don't think about my experience with GIVE in the magnificent village of Sop Chem, Laos. From the beginning until the end, volunteering in Laos was a beautiful experience. I could not believe how integrated the volunteers are within this village, and the extremely positive, transparent bond that the GIVE community has with the villagers. It was clear that the work done by the volunteers was very well thought out, and the guides always knew very well what they were doing. Not to mention, the guides are some of the most inspiring people you’ll ever meet. It was always so much fun with them around. Each day was always filled with something different, whether it began sunrise yoga and meditation on the beach, followed by an afternoon of hard work building the water tank alongside the villagers, or waking up for an early morning hike through the dark, cool caves across the river, followed by an afternoon of tutoring the local children in their school. One of the most memorable moments of my trip was when we had the Baci Ceremony, where at the end of our trip the entire village community would come out in the center of Sop Chem to celebrate the accomplishments made by the volunteers with the help of the villagers. There was not a dry eye in sight. The location of Sop Chem is absolutely breathtaking with rice paddies as far as the eye can see surrounding the community, and with hundreds of beautiful butterflies fluttering along the river banks... You will not be disappointed with the food either, in fact, it was incredible to see that with such little recourses the villagers have, how tasty they can make their food. At one point, I was even able to help prepare a meal for the other volunteers one day with Bo, one of the local guides who was with us. I sincerely appreciated the villagers of Sop Chem, and their desire to work with us on a multitude of projects. They are truly some of the kindest people you will ever meet. I hope to go back to Sop Chem, for it offered one of the most wonderful experiences of my life that I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a beautiful and truly meaningful experience. You'll only understand what I mean once you're there, so get out there and do it! You will not be disappointed. Sabaidee :)

When I was in college I took what was then my first trip out of the country with GIVE to Nicaragua. It inspired me to be the best person I could possibly be. It also inspired me to go to Laos with GIVE after graduating. Laos has such a huge peice of my heart that I get emotional every single time I speak about it; and trust me, I talk about it A LOT. I left Sop Chem feeling like I'll always have a home there, and I'll always have a family there. I think about my other home and family every single day. I think about the smiles that we shared as well as the tears. I think about how much they taught me, although I was their to assist them. I'm tearing up right now just writing this because I miss them so much. I didn't even know that I could dream this big, and I've never been more happy to stray from the beaten path. This was the best decision I've ever made, and it wouldn't have been possible without the amazing opportunities that GIVE affords. To all the amazing staff, and to all of the unforgettable people that I've met through this experience, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You've given me a love and appreciation for the world that can't be had any other way.

I have been on three give trips and each have been the most amazing trips! They are very different trips and unique in their own way! Although I would recommend each one and loved them all, Laos is my favorite trip due to the connections I made with the community! In Loas you stay in the middle of the village and get to connect with all the locals! You get the chance to become a local yourself and have sop jam a home away from home!

This past month, I have been given the amazing opportunity to travel abroad to Thailand and Laos. Thanks to GIVE Growth International Volunteer Excursions, I was able to help make a difference to lives half way around the world. While I was in Thailand, I taught English, helped build a water tank, pour concrete for a road in a remote village, and learn about the Mahoots (Traditional Thailand Elephant Handlers) and create connections with the communities we visited. This was the start of my global citizenship. I felt so touched by each of the lives we came across. The people were compassionate and kind. It made me feel so welcome in a place so different. In Laos, we stayed in one village for almost the entire trip. Sop Chem started to become my home as we developed relationships with the villagers. In Laos, I taught English and completed the water tank for their village. Since we stayed in the village and were constantly with the people, I got to learn a lot about them and create friendships and connections with these truly amazing people. These trips have inspired me. They have inspired me to not only help those around me, but those all around the world. A quote that I have lived by has never meant more to me now. "We cannot give the world all the world the good it needs, but the world needs all the good we can give." I plan on giving it everything I got until the day I die. GIVE has given me a new avenue to be apart of the Roots of Change and I cannot thank everyone apart of it enough. A special thanks to Tyler Wilfley for getting me to go on this trip. I would not have been able to see the amazing things that a group of people can do in a place like Thailand or Laos.

I learned so many amazing life lessons through GIVE, like how a simple smile or an open heart can make someones day. You become so immersed in the community and among your local volunteers that people from all walks of the world become a family, not only for those two weeks, but also after you leave. I've met the most amazing people and have made some truly incredible friends through GIVE and it had been the best moments of my life!

I loved the warm welcoming feeling the village and GIVE staff blanketed us in. You really do instantly begin to feel the family bond to GIVE and immediately notice the good they do in the community. Going on this trip has made me realize that the volunteers and guides do this because we are equals to the people in the village and wish to sustainably assist them in bettering the lives of the people in Sop Chem versus throwing a bunch of volunteers into a program to donate first world resources to expedite completion of projects. One thing I thought was really cool about this program was how much the chief expressed his love for the volunteers. The very first night he greeted us all with rice whiskey shots and even though he didn't know much English, he wanted everyone to feel welcome and included.

I cant say I really knew what to expect when I set out on my trip, but it was definitely beyond all expectations. I went to Laos, and it was the most amazing place I've ever been. It was great to be able to experience such a life changing trip with such awesome people too. The guides were great and so friendly, Jacob and Carly really helped make the trip so good. If you are not sure about going, because its expensive or scary or whatever else I'd say do it. Take the leap. You'll get to do things through GIVE that aren't possible as a standard traveller and you will love it.
